youth extreme sports film festival

I am looking to put on a youth extreme sports film festival in mid June. Many student film festivals are held in B.C, and none have an extreme sports category. I discovered that while working with kids, the majority of them took an interest in the film industry because it was a way to pursue a great career opportunity while at the same time as still being able to take an active interest in their favorite sport. I truly feel that this is something that should be highly encouraged. I would like the festival to be for high school kids, but also young adults from 19 to 21. This would not only allow the opportunity for young filmmakers to show there work, but it would also allow for the opportunity to intrigue and inspire the up and coming generations looking to get involved.

The plan is to hold the festival in Tofino, have professional filmmakers from B.C. teach the workshops, and have pro athletes involved in the kid

any idea if the rights for music will be needed?

I have to think about that a bit, im thing yes. I will have to talk to rip.tv about it. They may need the rights to show the films on the site.

there are a lot of good places to look for music that you can get the rights for. Look for un signed band. And explain to them that its only for student film fest, and you will put their names in the credits.

And the deadline wont be for a month or two, so you have time to re-edit if you need.

i just got the poster made, now just have to wait for rip.tv to put the page up. Its going to be open to the world to. So all you guys from the U.S can send stuff in.

any idea on minimum length of film and maximum length of film, and also maximum size in (mb's) the film could be?

10 minutes or under, but if it FREAKING good, but longer send it in. Maximum size dose not matter. If your film makes it in, we will get a copy from you for the site.

I will post it when we start to allow entries. I hope it will be just a few weeks. Just need to wait for rip.tv to get the page up.

Just so you know, there will be an entry free. We want to have put on workshops at the festival. May be getting some of the guys from the collective to come out.

Also, we are now making it film and photography festival. Thought that would be cool.

are we needing them or is it not a bother
(some student festivals dont need rights even though thety ask anyways)

I like the idea, the bc student film festival has a "xtreme/lifestyle" category this year, except from what i have understood it will be the same judges as usual, which would mean judges who arent in that kind of indusrty!

The thing im thinking about the rights is with rip.tv. They may not be able to play them with out the rights. We could still let them in the festival, but a lot less people would see your work.

entry fee be will be $20 for a film and $20 for a set of 5 photos. I am going to cannon to see if they will set me up with a pro still and video cam for the best. I hope they go for it.
