hey y'all. i had my bike on a work stand the other day and i noticed a lot of resistance when turning the cranks by hand. shop took a look, didn't see anything rubbing and couldn't pinpoint the problem. i have a howitzer with an e.13 SRS (pinned to bb). could my bb and chainguide combo be the root of the problem? anyone dare to venture an intelligent guess as to why? thanks and happy trails.

Take the cranks off and check that the BB bearings spin freely. Is the howitzer external? If so, then you could be over tightening the cranks and side loading the bearings.
Also, totally daft, but I have had a problem when setting up an E13 that I had the guide roller plate rubbing the bash ring. Totally stupid as I mentioned, but it is possible. |

Did you check your rear hub?? Maybe you are looking in the wrong spot.

My pedals squeak whenever I reach the top of my pedaling motion..where might the looseness be? I've tightened the cranks as much as they'll go.

It's the one major failing of the external bottom bracket. Because the shell size varies, it's impossible to have a spacer in the middle of the BB to stop the internal races of the bearings so that the cranks will not side load the bearings (causing premature wear). Given that design flaw, the manufacturers should not have gone with deep groove ball bearings (6xx series, instead an angular contact or roller bearing would have been much more appropriate).
My plan is to machine a precision spacer that will work on my bike only, which should provide a much longer run life. |
