It'll probably be the death of 26" rather than 29".

Death of the 26" as a trail/AM/XC wheel option. Freeride, slope, DJ and DH I think will stick with 26". It'll boil down to personal preference between 650B and 29" for trail riding.

I doubt 26" will stay for DH but we'll see.

Why do you say that? I'm curious about the 650b idea, but I'm not sold on the wheel size for DH. Folks have played with 29er DH bikes and there certainly hasn't been a revolution as a result.

I see the market shaking out to be 700c road bikes, 29er XC bikes, 650b all mountain / trail bikes, 26er DH, slopestyle, freeride and dirt jump bikes. That's my prediction.

this will just screw up light bike threads since the 650b rims will be heavier. it'll be: "check my retro DH rig, they made 'em waaay lighter in 2012"

maybe a rebirth of 36 spoke wheels?

but it will end the "what tire to use" thread since there's only 2 to choose from.

ugh. not cool.

more (IMO) useless options means less bulk manufacturing, means higher prices.

mtb has way too many standards, parts companies, frame companies, and middlemen. and with every micro-run of production needing to make a buck, and everyone everywhere along the line needing to make a buck, no wonder its so expensive.

/complaining

This my thoughts. I just want to ride a 26" mtb and have fun.

I think this may be it, the mass of bikes will be 27.5 and 29/26 specialties. Good thing for bike shops, less standards to stock.

right because 1 in every 10 bike is a 29er and the rest being 26" currently is a hardship for shops
