Vehicle Trade-In's

So I'm pondering this situation at the moment but I dont know much about the dynamics of it all. I'm assuming it involves being bent over among other such niceties.

Can anyone provide me with some good insight? If it matters I'm thinking about an '08 5 door wrx as opposed to my '05 civic.

Sorry, but I only give out medical advice. Car leasing help falls outside my area of expertise.

Said this several times but I'll say it every time a new-car thread comes up.

Check this site. http://www.edmunds.com/advice/buying...2/article.html

You can skip through the 9 pages until you find the relevant site. Very interesting and should save you some coin.

I have a '94 Mazda B4000 I'm going to be selling soon. Wanna trade? It's a 5 sp.

Go to the Toyota or Dodge website as they have free black book access to determine the value of your trade-in (in this case your civic).

Any time you trade in a vehicle to the dealer you are going to lose money. What you save is the headache of attempting a private sale. Private sales can be hard, and a giant pain in the ass. The first thing you need to know is the value of your car. Not just blackbook, but also what it is presently selling for in you location using autotrader. Next find out what the dealer is offereing you and decide if the money you lose is worth the time and effort you save. Keep in mind the cheaper the car, the easier it is to sell privately.

My only other suggestion is to negotiate the trade in first, and separate from the new car purchase. Do not do them in the same deal, as this is a common way for dealers to scam people with a "four box" system. Start with you trade in, and tell them if you get a good enough deal on that, you are willing to then discuss a new car purchase that day. First one, then the other.

Other way around.

Make the dea on the car you want, then throw in the trade. They will rant and roar but that's OK. Let them. You have the power and can walk.

Check with the lease manager. He can usually get you a better deal. No big deal to him as he works on lower margins.

Don't tell them you are going to pay cash if that's the case. They make lots of money on financing. Pretend you are going to finance and work the deal that way. Then tell them "nope, going to pay cash".

They love that.

Seriously, read the artical I posted. Can save you a bundle. And as was said, watch out for the 4-square process. The salesman giveth in one column, and taketh away in the other.

Tim's article is an excellent one - and a must read for anyone purchasing a new vehicle.

The only other alternative (were I to buy a new vehicle - which I just won't do... I like 2 year old lease returns when I'm buying), would be to sell your car privately to maximize that deal, then look to buying the car online/e-mail through the fleet manager. They are incented by volume of cars sold, not best price - they'll often cut to the chase and offer up close to the best price they can give. Friend of mine purchased in this manner (statistical sampling of one - I know) and achieved a very competitive price. It's at least worth looking into.

Either way is fine, as long as they are done independently. The only problem with this way is if they don't give you a reasonable price on your used car you wasted a lot of time and effort negotiating on a new car you aren't going to buy. If you use this as leverage more power to you, but personally I hate dealing with car salesmen (and I can guarantee my story would top everyone), so I prefer not to figure out if this is someone I can work with right away.

I find it easier to negotiate a new car price than a trade in price, so I would rather get the tough one done first. Most dealers prefer it be done the other way.

Well this is my story.

My ex and I were out shopping for a car for her. She had her heart set on a smaller sporty-type car, 5 speed.

We went to a used car lot, been around for a long time under the same ownership, was clean, and seemed to have decent quality of autos in stock.

She fell for a 4 year old red Sunbird, 2 door, 5 speed, low KM. Took it for a spin and decided it was the one she wanted.

I suggested she wait, I'll get my father to look at it. She agrees.

Dad comes out after work to check it out. Takes it for a drive, comes back and says "Clutch is starting to go".

Saleman overhears him and says "That's 'cause you are not used to GM clutches. They feel odd compared to others you may have tried. The clutch is fine."

Father just nodded his head, walked back to his van and waited for us.

I look at GF, she looks at me, and we say "no thanks" and walk away.

However, my parting words to the sales guy were "My father is a GM mechanic, has been since 1969, and , works for Terra Nove Motors (the local Pontiac dealership). His specialty is transmissions and front ends. So, yeah, I guess he knows nothing about how a Pontiac Sunfire clutch should feel."

Salesguy didn't say anything, just dropped a shade of pale, and went back into his office.

We should have a car-salesperson experience story-telling contest.

Tim.

Nice! Just read the article start to finish. It was a good read and had some good stuff in there, but nothing that a sensible person wouldn't know already.
