So i lost a key to one of my bike U-locks. Its not the type that can be opened with a Bic Pen. What's my options at getting this thing open? Anyone have a big grinder?

I heard plasma torches can work.

Diamond disked angle grind COULD work.

Is it just locked to the bike or is it locking the bike to something? It doesn't take much of a grinder to cut it. If you need it cut and it is mobile bring it out, if it is stuck, PM me and I will lend you a grinder.

Lee, the best option is to get an angle grinder. It will take you about 5 minutes to grind it. Just make sure that you add some tesnsion to help hold the lock in place while you grind. And of course be careful to keep the grinder disc away from the bike frame or parts.
Definetly wear gloves and safety glasses for this as there will be tons of sparks.
If you are in the downtown area go by Simon's Bike shop at 680 Robson. Simon has a grinder in the back and it's been sent out many a time to help people who lost their key.

Lee I can help you out, does either near UBC or North Delta work for you? I have angle grinders in both locations, or is this lock attached to something that can't be moved?

thanks for all the suggestions. It's locked to a Ti Road bike and luckily I could move it so I thought it best to let Obsession deal with it. Really don't want to mess up the bike

ask Obsession to replace it with a new carbon fibre lock to keep the weight down after they take an angle grinder to it

I once got an actual Kryptonite U-lock (pretty beefy one - combination style) off with a couple of whacks from a regular ballpeen hammer. The combination thing had seized, and getting the thing off was a piece of cake. Needless to say, that was the last combination-style lock I've ever used. Also, the lock was only a few months old. I bought it just after all the fuss about being able to open them with Bic pens. Got a full refund. D.

I was thinking about that Duncan but I really didn't want to dent the frame

If you need it taken off, you need to have someone from Surrey. That kind of thing is taught at the rec. center, along with how to break into cars.

Couldn't you just order more keys from the Kryptonite folks? I don't know how long it would take them to send you the new ones though.
