Old topic but i'm a litte bored today. I'm just wondering what tires everyone is running right now in these inbetween conditions.

I'm currently on Michelin 2.2 comp 24's. I've been loving them but I had a debate with someone about maxxis versus michies for the dry and sorta dry.

How about it?

I won't comment on those tires because everyone knows that Nevegals rule......or is it Big Earls that rule......I forget.

Big bike: Michelin 16 2.5 front and rear. Might throw on a cheapy high roller or something for the rear that won't wear so fast in the dry.

Light bike: Blue Groove 2.1 Stick-E front and Larsen TT 1.9 rear (funny looking, but fast).

They make a Smoke again? Can I get a Dart to match? Those tires were awesome, I remember that you were either a square-edged (Smoke and Dart) or round edged (Z-Max's) rider, and that was that.

So many dead sets of Smokes, Darts and Ground Controls in the old tire pile. Loved 'em.

Now? XC tires, and I change 'em like underwear.

I loved ground controls...LOVED THEM....but run nevegal/blue groove combo now and it seems to get the job done.

I have thought of changing rear tire as mine is getting worn (probably for fall) and like the look of those big earls and the syncros tires as well....but love to know what others are running successfully.

Nevegals and Minions are sick, lots of people hate on them though, I guess because they don't like products that perform.

For even older school, how about Farmer John & his Cousin?

I remember when the Smoke came out and wasn't available in Canada. I made a special trip to the US to buy a set.

FR: 2.8 & 2.5 Michelin (next set of tires is 2.7 & 2.5 Nevegal)
XC: 2.3 & 2.1 Nevegal folding
XC HT off road wheel set: 2.1 Mobster folding
XC HT commuter wheel set: 2.1 Nokian folding, with small low knobs (who can remember their Finnish model names?)

Big bike: Front is a 2.5" comp 16, and is never anything else. Rear is a worn out 2.5" comp 24 for Whistler and the dry. I have a 2.2 comp 16 I throw on if it gets greasy. I also have a set of Hutchinson Barracudas I've been playing with having picked them up at the gearswap for next to nothing. So far they seem ok. A little bigger than the Michelins, and not as much grip on large, smooth rocks, but otherwise very good.

"Small": bike: Whatever I can get cheap in sticky rubber. I'm not pinning it enough to require ultimate cornering bite, but I do want the traction on wet roots and rocks. Currently a 2.3" Nevegal/Blue Groove combo. Seems ok.

I've also given up on Tubeless. I had no less flats with a Michelin/823/Stan's sealant combo than I do running xc tubes in my old 321s, and fixing tubeless flats is a complete pain in the ass.

It concerns me how many of these old school tyres I had, or at least remember. Smoke/darts, Z maxes, Velociraptors, I had 'em all at one point. Can't say I ever had porcupines though. I remember reading a retro article about them in about 1998 I think!

i've been running the new 3C Maxxis High Rollers and they are fricken awesome. Even changing them over you can feel the burliness of the sidewall. super good traction and they seem to hold up well too.
i haven't been this impressed with a product since i got my chromag!
(you know i'm rocking a fresh set for opening weekend at the Star!!)

while i did have a couple sets back in the day, i don't have any now. but yeah - if you can find them in good shape, these things are fetching pretty ridiculous prices amongst the vintage crowd.

Heres a unique one - i am running Specialized Chunders 2.5" - like a high roller but grippier in a wider range of conditions. I've run them since feb 06 and not found anything to compare - i tried nevegals this may but they werent a patch on the chunder.
Roll faster than any other tire ive used (high rollers, nevegals, minions, kinetics, blue groove) and feel great on the shore.

Funny, the only "flat" I've had to "fix" consisted of putting more air in with a floor
pump. That was with a 1/4" rip in the sidewall. Keep in mind I put a lot of goo
in my tires.

BTW-I'm not a pinner and we got lots of lava here...never flatted at WBP either (he says thus jinxing himself before this years trip).

But to each his/her own.

Used to be a huge Nevegal fan but now I'm rolling on WTB Prolwer MX 2.5's folding bead. Rolls fast and grabs tight at Whistler wet or dry.

I remember when a main selling point on bikes was "it can fit a gazzy 3.0" and there was NO other option if you were really hard core.
do they still make Rokko's? square as hell, square knobs, loud, slow, and they were the it tire for street trials probably 5-7 years ago?

Can anybody recommend good decently light tires (front and back) for a Giant Reign that will mostly see Whistler jump trails (Freight train, Eh-line, 4x, etc.), Valley trails, woodlot, Seymour in the summer, and hard pack? Looking for about 2.1 to 2.3 at the widest, and fast rolling. Handling in the wet is bonus.
Thanks!

Bontrager Big Earls 2.35 folding in the wet compound. Works pretty good, though I might pick up a pair in the harder compound for the rest of the summer.

Christ, the way this weather is going you might as well keep your Wet compound tires on all summer (if you want to call it that). Snow on the Okanogan connector! Anyways, 2.7 Big Earl on the front, 2.5 Big Earl on the rear.

DHF and DHR in the "correct" placement....as soon as they are close to needing replacement I am going DHF's front and rear.

I havent had a bad experience on the tires yet....(excluding my hack-ish riding)

After lots of switching and testing on both my bikes... Michelin 16 2.5" front and rear in the winter, and just made the switch to Maxxis Minion F 2.5" 3c for the front and rear (I like the F over the R for the rear... corners sooooo good)... excellent on CBC in the rain yesterday, and super grippy in the drier conditions, though havent tried that combo in truly dry conditions yet. But definitely loving both combinations.

Nevegal soft compounds were good for about the first week... they wore down and then they sucked. Big Earl is ok too, for a cheap tire it is great, but it is exactly that, a cheap tire... the way I figure it, if I have to spend an extra $20 to stay shiny side up this year, then the extra money on Michi's and Maxxis tires was worth it.

Have Fun

Bontrager Big Earl 2.35" Really happy with the overall performance of these tires. Good grip in the dry and wet. In real mud/rainy slop, I find they tend to pack up and lose traction. But any non mud specific tire probably would too. Can't beat the price/weight/performance factor.

I 'm running Nevie 2.5s on the Dirtbag and Maxxis Minion 2.35s on the Coiler D. Love the Nevies, the Minions not so much. They are going to magically tranfrom into 2.3 Nevies shortly.
