So I went about to replace my shifter cable last night. I have been having some issues shifting.
When putting the new cable in, you have to thread it through a tunnel, (not just along a open-sided guide, like shimano) - this makes getting the new cable in the right spot difficult.
I was never able to get it in, so I took the whole mechanisim apart. This is where I learned about the cable tunnel.
I also found out that there is a spiral coil spring in there. Here is the important part: My spring lost its proper spiral and had wound up and over itself. This explained my shifting problems (unable to shift into the largest cog)
So, I rewound the coil, put in the new cable, put it all back together and were done!
shifts like a dream
...in case anyone else has a similar problem....
