View Full Version : Whistler Trail Chronology
Here is one for all of you veterans.
I was thinking about the trail evolution and expansion.
Does nayone know the order in which the trails were put in, I recall when Garbo opened, and when the contest to name Schleyer occured, and I was around when Karate Monkey, Sidetrack opened and will be around when lower Crank it Up come online.
Anyone able to list the trails in order of appearance?
I'll start it off with the most recent additons....

00 - Aline, but only in sections as the year went on, and it was way skinnier, its a highway now.
01 - Aline finished to Bline connection, I think.....

Devil's club and D1 were opened in August 2005 because I rode these trails in 2005 for my first WBP experience :)
It's impressive that from only 4 trails in 1997 the bike park has grown. It's very fast. We have a long road to do in France before having the same Bike Park quality than the WBP.
First of all, change the French Mountain Bike mentality :) It's not win by advance :(

I just found a couple old maps and according to them...
Too Tight - 05
Angry Pirate - 05
Fatcrobat, Captain Safety - 05
Drop in Clinic - 06
No Duff - 06?
Not sure if those are when they actually appeared.
thanks!
I also found an old post from January 2003 saying how the person could not wait to get back to whistler the next summer (summer 2003) to ride scheleyer ("dragon schleyer") and dirt merchant again. So i edited my list and moved them from 2003 to 2002 and added your stuff....

I'm going by distant memory but.... I believe we descended Crack Addict in the 2000 Whistler International Classic XC race. Imagine fresh steep loam and an optional walking line on the other side of a rope. Then we traversed under the lift to Heart of Darkness.
That would mean Crack Addict probably became a trail either in fall 2000 or 2001 because it was new in mid-july 2000.

My first time riding was in '97. I remember Fantastic and a trail down the Olympic run from the Gondi midstation. B Line & Crabapple definitely didn't exist at the time. Ho Chi Min technically did, but not the HCM that exists now. It just went down the ski trail instead of in the trees initially, but I think they built the new line during the summer of '97. You can still see parts of the old line - especially just up hill of where B Line pops out. I think Golden Triangle existed back then as well.
I'd estimate that B Line was '99 or '00, and was actually probably both. Crabapple also sort of existed, but in various forms. It used to be B Line before B Line existed - I remember riding down the ski trail but through really tall grass & flowers.
Garbo opened in '04, and I believe that trails like Too Tight, Fatcrobat, Capt Safety etc all opened late that year. Freight Train was '05. Sidetrack opened in '06 but was sitting there with a 'closed for construction' sign since '04. Smoke & Mirrors was '04, I think Angry Pirate was late '04. Crank It Up was '05, plus more in '06 (and '07 apparently). Karate Monkey was '06. I don't know if Upper Karate Monkey exists yet. Rock City = Nationals, and I think the name changed back in '05.
Yes, I am good at remembering useless crap.
Trail maps from each year would probably be the best way to determine this, but some trails show up on the trail map before they're built and others are built mid-summer and show up on following year's map.

Yeah, I remember when Devils Club first opened. All the ladders had small drops off the ends since they didnt build down ramps.
And what was crabapple turns?

And what was crabapple turns?
It was a green trail next to Crabapple hits before the middle of last year when the snow making went in and destroyed the trail, was a flowy single track trail with nice corners you could rail.....rumour has it they may build another....

I think a combo trail of OS and No Joke was open in 2003, but you could only do it with a guide, I don't know if that counts.
