I want to tackle some/a couple epic rides this summer season. Do you have any recommendations within SW BC and NW Wash? I talking more XC/all mountain type stuff as I'll be riding my Devinci Hucker hardtail.

Thurston is what my boss suggested, he said its about a 3 hr climb....but he's a mountain goat.
Has anyone tried riding up Cheam or any of the other Chilliwack area peaks?

Look up a thread I put entitled Alpine Ridge top rides.
I've climbed and skied Cheam but never biked it. Not much to see there for biking - its mainly doubletrack

Thanks Lee. That thread looks absolutely amazing, just the kind of stuff I am after. Too bad not all the pictures are labeled. Besides Thurston does anyone have any good warm up rides to suggest?

whistler has some amazing big rides
comfortably numb is the king, add green lake loop and even kill me thrill me to make it insane.
musical bumps is beautiful.
out of province i would suggest angels staircase in windthrop washington. it is 25+ MILES of ribbon single track that crosses 2 alpine passes. this is a 6-8 hour ride.
PM me for stuff i can't write on the board

Close to you there is some legal singletrack in Manning. There is also some stuff in the Princeton-Tulameen area. Also Red Mtn in Mission is fun and so is the Burke singletrack for smallish jaunts and dayrides - but certainly not alpine epics. A fun ride would be all the way up to Burke to the cabins then down Triple Crown - but the climb in a slog on fire road.
Pick up the books - Backroad Mapbooks (Mussio publications) and Biking in Southwestern BC - Greg Maurer. I used those two books a lot when i first started then as I learned more I expanded my riding past them. You'll be surprised by what you find

Check out Galbraith mountain, outside of Bellingham. Miles of trails. Very xc. You can get maps on line or at Fairhaven cycle.

I think I'm going to tackle Thurston tomorrow morning. I found a trail report online from some hikers that did it on May 12, and the trail is all clear of snow. Wish me luck!!

I have ridden up the Elk Mountain side as a "in and back" but never ventured all the way to the Cheam side of Thurston and out onto the Chipmunk Creek road. How was it? Local Indian bands are busy making plans to harvest logs on Elk. Part of the harvest plan involves the trail itself which may affect the ability to ride this area. Riding the Elk Mountain side is brutal and there are definitely "hike-a-bike" sections but I like doing this a couple of times a year.

The ride was good! I went to the Thurston Summit and turned around and went back down the way I came up. There where signs outlining and areas to be logged and while they don't take out any of the trail they do come within arms reach of it.
I wouldn't mind doing it again, now that I've lightened up the HT somewhat.

Too bad you didn't hit the singletrack descent. Kind of a wast of a great climb.....
Also check out Tenquille Lake/Wolverine Creek Trail, Wildhorse Canyon, McDougall Rim, The Keystone, Lockhart Creek, 7 Summits, Windy Pass, the Silvercup and about a thousand other classics.

So when is your trail guide book coming out?
For "The Keystone" do you mean Keystone & Standard Basin? Just curious how many of those on your list I've ridden.

Me and my buddy Dill are going to do the Seven Summits (http://www.leelau.net/2006/sevensummits070806/sevensummits070806.htm) loop later in the year when it is not so hot. Looks so epic.

I did a +/- 90km with them in Aug 2007 from Halfmoon Bay back to Langdale. The BBQ on the second night was awesome, and the riders are everything from super serious to super casual -- top of the line gear to the 'how the hell does that bike still work'
I took my Cove Stiffee (a little overbuilt at 36lbs) but did fine - looks like they're registering for 2008 already.

A little late coming into the thread, but you might want to check out this ride I did a few times this summer. 6100 foot descent, great scenery, excellent singletrack. Ride is near the town of Leavenworth in Washington State.
