Again I am amazed by the abilities of these young riders. I have to ask though, considering the preoccupation with dirt jumping, what separates us from BMXer? Many of the moves we have seen thus far in the competition are pretty average for many 14 year olds riding 20 inch. Dirt jumping is cool to watch and it's fun but we are always going to be the poor cousin if we get obessessed by it. Mountain bikes were made to go fast over unruly terrain and to tame impossible steeps as well as get in the air. I am really feeling cheated by the lack of variety and creativity shown in the majority of the videos. Dirt jumping is the flavour of the month but let's not forget our roots people. We are mountain bikers after all.

Cam McRae

-------------------------------------------

Upon further inspection of his little writeup on the UFC2 round 3 I'd say I'd have to completely agree with Cam on what he just said above.

Mountain biking won't progress in the streets or on the dirt jumps because it has already been done for 10 years by the bmx'ers. The only thing that seperates us from the Bmx scene is Trails. The one original thing is trail riding.

Just a little head's up for you.

haha - nice john, ironically corey and I are having this same discussion in the mod forum.

I refuse to mutate my hardtail into a $2600 BMX.

But like you said, I think its just a fad - eventually the dudes that are really into street and DJ'n will just buy BMX's in order to really progress.

I think Cam would agree with you 100% Trev.

His comments are about the UFC, not putting guys down for going big.

I don't think he is dissing the guys based on a 60 second clip. He is not tryin to comment on the fun aspect, I'd say more on the relevancy of the footage in regards to mtb riding as a whole.

I don't care what people do on, or to their bikes, but for me, trails is what keeps the 'mountain' in mountain biking.

Cam's got the right idea, it's the Utimate Freeride Competition, not the Untimate Dirt Jump Competition. I like the DJ's and watching guys do them, but this is only one small aspect of freeriding. Skinnies, steeps, slippery roots, baby heads, tail whippage, hopsand speed are all aspects of freeriding. I wanna see guys do more than just bust style over a jump before I give them my vote.

What the hell does freeride mean and why do some people want to give themselves this classification? I consider myself a "cyclist" because I do it all. I find it funny when people actually referr to themselves as a "freerider". Wouldn't road and xc be included in that?

No Offence, Cycling sounds like a Road Racing thing.

I think the majority call themselves "Riders".

I think some jib-meisters like investing $2000 into a pseudo-BMX-MTB-bike rather than just spending $400 on a nice lil BMX.

Thats actually a good argument - MTBs are much easier on the ailing bodies of us older dudes - BMXs are not very forgiving.

All you guys bagging on the "dj /street" crowd sound like the old XC relics who were bagging on "Freeriders". While watching the UFC, I'd rather see some more trail riding and I'm not too impressed that the Aussie won his round. A little DJ to show versitilty is cool. Many off us have BMX back ground, but like Chris said, Mt. bikes are easier on old bones. Some people didn't just hop on 7" of suspension and start off from scratch. But, we don't all have to be one dimensional "huckers". If thats your thing, fine. I bet any of these so called "BMXers" could hop on an 7" travel bike and blow people away (me included). They just choose to apply their skills in a different way. It's called progrerssion. It may get phased out when the next big thing comes rolling in, but till then, just ride.

I don't think anyone's hacking on the talents of bmx'ers, dj'ers, or anyone else - quite the opposite, in fact. But if the UFC is supposed to represent the "Ultimate" Freerider, then dj'ing and street alone should not cut it, just like hucking or skinnies alone are not enough - but they are all important elements.

In my mind, you can't be the ultimate freerider if you can't do a bit of everything. Sure, you'll have your strengths and weaknesses, but if you're a glorified bmx rider on 26" wheels, forget it - that's not a complete representation of freeride in and of itself. Ditto if you're just making craters in Utah, or ONLY jumping. And yeah, most of these riders ARE great at more than one or two things - usually the talents that make you a good jumper or hucker or street rider can be transferred as long as you want to. Then again, I've seen Bender try to negotiate a 30 degree slope with long grass before, and he looked like a duck out of water - it was pretty awkward looking to say the least.

k , so MTB street is better for older bodies than BMX ... i just have one question

then why do we sponsor and put mtb street riders in movies ?
think about it !

if they are worried about that .. they grab a 24" ride park or street half decent and we sponsor them ?...

if you want my opinion on what freeriding is all about watch any of the kranked movies ! ..

people are generalizing all the categories so that there is no more "RIDING"

what happened to open DH style freeriding ... ?
everyone thinks of shore when actual mountain biking is mentioned

mtb street is fun but not worthy of sponsors or movies ... end of story !

it should be one of those things you and a pal do after a ride ...not an entire section of the sport .. i also agree everyone can do what they please

BUT ... you must realise it is our responsibility to preserve our sport and not make a fool of our sport

To each his OWN.
If I want to ride street with my mtb, I'll do so. If I want to ride trials with my mtb, I'll do so. If one feels more comfortable riding something that was meant for BMX's on a mtb, then let them be. Nothing you say will convince them otherwise, because people ride for themselves. Not to please an opinion shared by some.
