Is there any relatively easy way to take the clamps off a lock-on grip? Or are they pretty much stuck there for good?

take the grip and move it to the outside of the bar (approx 5 mm )and simply crack it off. the leverage will do all the work.....very easy, in fact you`ll wonder why ya didn`t think of it sooner.
just make sure the tabs are to the sides and NOT TOP AND BOTTEM

This doesn't damage the tabs/grips at all?

I'll take the grip right off, take a mid-size flathead screwdriver, fit the blade in the gap of the griptab/lock ring and just pry it off.
