Anyone ever sip (split) thier tire tread knobs for extra grip? Just read about it in a mag. Curious of how effective it is.

I've never done it, but I'd think the split knobs would be less sturdy and rip off the tire. but you never know and i aint no expert

I used to do it to well used dirt bike tires to get a fresh edge ,I used a small hacksaw,LIGHTLY grind the wavyness off the blade
I just did it to the edge that is biteing into the dirt under power

If I recall people do (or did) it with hot exacto knife blades or something along that line... And yes, I'd imagine that if you went overboard with the siping it would mean weaker knobs and then they might not give much grip/support or at the very least they would not last as long.

I do this to the tires I ride in the winter time, the extra grip is noticeable but the tire wears out much much quicker. I also remove a few nobs from my Mich'ys for a better rear tire in the spring/ wet n muddy conditions. As stated the grip is much better but the wear is about 50-60% quicker. And dont sipe any tires you plan on running in hardpack, the nobs roll over easier and it is really noticeable when railng berms, or ripping high speed flat corners.
Ive seen some comp 24 rears with one set of the inside knobs cut off on racers bike.

I bought a comp 24 with one set of inside knobs cut off. I didn't notice any difference at all.

unless you're racing i dont really see a point... just ride them until they get worn in.

If you do it don't cut through the entire knob, at most half of the depth
