Can someone give me the run down on chain guides ? or know where i can read up on them ? I wana get a chain guide but i dont know if they will fit on my bike? will a chain guide fit on any bike ? or does there have to be some special mount built on the frame ?

Thanks

Yes a chain guide will fit on your bike

Can't determine that without you telling us what kind of bike it is.

To look up on chainguides search the forums. To search hit the big search button inbetween rules and logout.

I just got a blackspire stinger for my giant faith, its only a single roller @ $30.

The only time I've dropped the chain is if I pedal while the suspension is active. But for general freeride its all you really need.

The raceface diablolous guide works pretty damn good on BB mounted bikes.

If you dont have the ISCG mount (those 3 holes) then you can buy the style (I think kona makes one) that mounts behind your BB cup, using the chainguide as a spacer. There cheap, and 1 wheeled. If not, buy an ISCG adapter and run something like an MRP and its allllll goooddd

E-thirteen makes great guards, that will fit on your BB. Check out the DRS if your running a dual ring setup or a SRS for a single ring setup.

I've got the e-Thirteen DRS on my rig and I'm not so sure I like it... if the adjustment isn't just perfect, the roller won't roll, making it noticeably harder to pedal and the thing only switches position half the time I change the chainring position.

The diabolous guide is pretty much the same as the SRS.

chainguides will only work if you got 1 gear in the front right ?

Dantes Inferno

For the most part.

The DRS (E.Thirteen) works ok, but not great.

Blackspire makes a dual front ring setup but I dont think they are in business anymore, could be wrong. But a single ring chain guide always works better.

I guess single chainring is cool for DH, but I like climbing and even climbing technical gnar with my DH rig. It's a good workout for my fat ass although I haven't quite developed enough leg muscle to pedal the 45 lb bike up Old Buck or even the fireroad on Fromme without using the granny ring.

I just use my right foot to get up seymour, and fromme is overrated.

But you can make a ring sandwich with the bash rings from envy.

You need cranks that have the ability to run a granny. The order is like so

Granny Ring|Envy Inner Bash Guard|Middle Ring|Bash Guard

The first half of your gears will work with the granny for climbing, and the second half of your rings will work with the middle ring for desending. Your chain might rub the tire if you have a 2.7 or something.

so let me get this strait...i need to buy special cranks to make my front ring a single ring ? then i can buy a single ring chain guide

Nope. Just take off the little sprocket, any crank can run a single ring. What kind of crank ?

Sorry, any crank can run a single ring chain guide. I was responding to the other guy.

For example Hussefelts (or at least mine) didnt have a place to put a granny ring making a DRS kinda useless.

i got Truvativ Hussefelt, dual 32/22 with bashguard, Isis spline

The DRS chain guide isn't all that great, the roller gets jammed and it's heavy. The Blackspire Stinger is $30, available at most bike shops (It's ordered through the norco catalogue), <100g, works with 2 chain rings and fits over your bottom bracket, which means you need either an external BB, or a flanged cup on the drive side (most BBs do).
I've been running a BS stinger for a while and I have no complaints at all.

will the bs $30 guide work on this ?

Yes. You have a Truvativ BB by the looks of it. The flanged lip on the BB cup is what will hold in the guide.

Not the clearest photo since it's black on black, but:

i have the new rf chain guide. it works great, but doesnt allow a grannie gear.

some of the guys are running the duellie chain guide i think by blackspire..thats the one to get IMO it lets you run a grannie and mid ring.

If you look above you will see that the stinger gives you Dual ring usage and is cheap and light.

i saw that actually. yea I prefer the looks of the "duellie". couple guys I know are running them.

The Dewllie is a good guide, but it's hefty and overkill for most application.

always go to your local bike shop to know if it fits or not because they will be able to look at it and make the right choice for you

my vote is for the stinger if you want 2 rings and a guide. Although, often when you're riding in your granny you're going walking speed anyway so a single ring might suffice

If walking was faster than pedalling, I would still choose to pedal for the satisfaction of it :)

Haha, agreed, and I have had atleast one person walk past me while I pedalled uphill... but I kept pedalling even though they were faster, I like it more that way.

Edit: And for what it is worth, I am running a e.13 DRS. It works well, had a few issues at the outset, but after a few tweaks to get it setup just right, I haven't had a problem for about a year now.

I put a Blackspire Stinger on my '06 Slayer and a bashguard to replace the 3rd sprocket.
I went from dropping my chain 4 or 5 times in a few trails to not yet dropped.

As mentioned above, it is the best bang for the buck. +- $30.

I love the functionality of the Stinger but I do have one gripe. I have bent the thing pretty bad twice now falling off the sides of skinnies. I have been able to sorta bend it back in place but it not as good as it once was. Still cheap and functional and if you dont fall off the side of skinnies it should not bend =)

I just installed a stinger on my '06 Six from Biggles advice, Saint cranks dual ring w/bash. I had to cut some of the metal away to get it to fit (the pivot point on the frame got in the way). I haven't ridden it yet but seems to run ok. I can't figure out though how it works with a 2 ring setup. In granny gear the chain rides on the top part of the roller and then drops down in place when I shift to the middle ring. Is this right? Biggles?

heh, I got lazy and didn't cut away the area around the pivot point and it creaks a little :)

When in the granny gear, the chain rides on the larger step and is held captive between the guide plate and the middle ring. When you gear up to the middle ring, the chain is now held captive between the bashring/outer flange on the outside and the step to the larger diameter part of the roller on the inside.

I may put my mad MS Paint skills to use later...
