So all went well yesterday, and council approved of our site, and idea for a bike park, so now theres just a couple more things that need to be done. Firstly, getting the area approved by the ALR commitee (believe thats what its called) as its on ALR land, shouldn't be a problem. Secondly, design... fun stuff :)

One thing is though, we have to try and fundraise money to help with the park (citys giving us $20 000).. any ideas ? Originally I wanted a bike related item, but that definatley wont work due to the quantity that we'd want moved and the amount of riders (lots.. but not enough to get a substantial amount). I think some kind of draw would be cool.. ideas ?

I would work on getting donations such as materials. You will need LOTS of dirt. Start there, dirt can get expensive. Then I would look for someone who likes biking and has a machine and knows how to operate it.

But before all of that, have a plan and an idea of how much materials you will need and how much it will cost. It will give your fundraising an edge where you might be able to lower prices of whatever yours doing and make it more popular.

Good Luck.

I would aim for 50% more dirt than you think you need. It can always be moved around. Are you going to be using lumber? What kind of tools do you have? Do you have the nails? Proper nails are also very pricy, maybe talk to local hardware store and try and make a deal.

We haven't designed it yet, so im not too sure about wood and nails. Id like to see at least 1 wall ride, but im not sure if thats a possibility

You should scope the area and get an idea of the materials you need. Then work on local companies for material donations.

What is your timeframe assuming the landowner permits you to build?

I would say also get ahold of your local riding associations if you have any. They can be of great assistance and may be able to help with fundraising efforts.

if you need someone with an excavator i can probably get a friend to give you a few days worth free. :)
for fundraising i suggest selling a nude mtn bike calendar... seemed to work well for the mudbunnies. :)

Freak, if the city has come to the table with land and 20,000.00 your project holds a lot of credibility. Best to look at applying for grants to help with the extra money you are going to require. Organizations providing community grants look favourably on projects where the city is involved with volunteers.
One example: when we put a trials park in Port Moody a few years back on a vacant lot and materials the city provided us, Rotary stepped up and provided the extra dollars we needed to pay a builder to put it in.
Check if anyone in your group experienced in applying for grant $$.
PM me if you'd like and we can discuss this more.
