View Full Version : where are the trails with lovely vistas as in pic here?

I'm a guy who loves to hike/ride and walk with big sky open vistas, i,e, mountains around me to inspire me....I don't really hiking/running/biking for a long time (but a short-medium time is OK) inside forests....trees become trees after awhile, if you know what I mean (with all due respect to nature lovers). .
So where are the trails for xc with lovely vistas as in the pic here? (sure it's off of the rocky mtn webpage but you get my drift)
www.bikes.com/bikes/2007/steel/index.aspx
While I don't mind riding in forests it is so nice to crest a hill and take in some great scenery, too....I guess being new to the nsride group (nice group of people as per the kickoff ride and seymour pub schmoozefest last Saturday, btw) it will take me awhile to get to know the the more scenic trails for my HT.

While I don't mind riding in forests it is equally pleasant to crest a hill and take in some great scenery that we're blessed with here on the west coast, too....I guess being new to the nsride group (nice group of people as per the kickoff ride and seymour pub schmoozefest last Saturday, btw) it will take me awhile to get to know the the more scenic trails for my HT.
PS: the vancouver bicycling club
www.vbc.bc.ca/
is having a potluck this saturday for new members...so if you're also into road riding and decide to come down, I just might see you there (but I don't want to miss the nsride either...decisions decisions decisions!!)...I will have to jostle both groups into my schedule so I can do both road and mtn riding.

doubt that you can get that directly on the shore... im sure whistler/pemberton/squamish have tons of the epic alpine riding though

Nope, the sunny Smokanagan. Barb and me just got back from a ride on the local trails. Sunny, dusty, and warm.
Both those shots are from the last ten days. I'm not shittin' ya. I'm having an open house for the next 6 weeks....

yeah it makes sense, ie, the okanagan....in whistler I guess more snow caps would have given that area away.
but back to you...congrats!...lovely area....are the trails quite technical out there or also a good mixture for all ability levels? (remember I'm a whoosy beginning HT rider...woe is me!)
I AM looking forward to the group rides to whistler, the sunshine coast and other places (I hear bellingham has some great riding areas, too) through the
cool folks I have met via the NSRIDE group!

That picture is warner glacier in the southern Chilcotins. From the angle that trail is in the lorna lake area north of warner pass possibly off Dorrie Ridge

Actually Lee, I'm pretty sure that particular shot is either Brohm Ridge or somewhere up around Singing Pass.
Canali, The Okanagan is where I take folks to get prepared for the North Shore. Much more forgiving zone. As usual, you are the determining factor on how gnarly it gets out here, but in general its more open and smoother than the coast. I've been riding nothing but my HT since I got here.

oh crap smoke - you're right.
The red mountain on picture right is Fissile. The glacier is Overlord. Of course, its not Warner glacier as the shot would include the lake.
canali - look in photos and video forums for a thread I will post on and bump to the top - Ridgetop Alpine Rides./

Your best bet for around here would probably be Whistler.

talk to leelau - he's the man for riding where there's some serious scenery.
He's got lot of his rides described on his web site, but I'm too lazy at the moment to figure out the link.

The Rocky pic is Whistler. That's the Overlord Galcier and Fissile in the background so that's probably shot off Harmony Ridge. I don't think they actually allow riding there. Chilcotin riding is likely the closest you can get to epic stuff in sub alpine to alpine. One can always head up Brohm ridge just past Squamish. Just a road most of the way from what I recall.
I knew guys who used to ride around Mt Baker and a place called Mt Sham(sp?) which is out Chilliwack way.

a place called Mt Sham(sp?) which is out Chilliwack way.
It's Mt. Cheam, but is pronounced the way you spelled it. The ride you speak of is Elk and Mt. Thursten out in the Wack. It has probably the nastiest climb that I have ever done, but the pay off is some fantastic views.

I am hoping to head out there again late this summer (very late august or September).
Dave
Holy carp, you gots to stop posting pix of my butt on the innerweb!!

That's a fantastic ride. I think I was pretty fit when I did it (back in the day riding a Dekerf) and it was two solid hours grinding in granny. It's beautiful up there but the downhill is way too short/quick considering the price.
I'm not saying I wouldn't do it again but I remember feeling gypped.

yeah just checked out some of lee's pics below
www.leelau.net/2006/chilcotinsept2006/chilcotinsept2006.htm
....now THOSE pics are exactly the type of riding, along with the Okanagan ones earlier listed, that
I'd like to check out (DROOOLL FACTOR COMING ON!...gotta reallign my bib! :nerd: ).
....but hopefully they'd be OK to explore on a HT (not going the dually route...yet...although I was tempted with a fluid 1 for $1100 I recently saw on the buy/sell portion of this site...just listed recently, too)

I did that ride twice last year and certainly didn't feel gypped. Yeah the forest road is a slog, but the dh section after the stairs was like a luge run from heaven.

The ride is 50% for the actual riding experience, 50% for the views! As long as you pick a nice clear day you'll always get yer money's worth on the views. The swooping descent at the end is just icing on a very tasty cake.

It IS kind of a bummer that the DH doesn't actually go to the bottom though. "Finishing" half-way up the side of a mountain feel somehow.......premature.

yes it is...
you can get close though, with a good camera deceptively close.
That photo was probably taken very close to this area ( near the old boundary bowl) but looking towards fissile more.

If you get a guide you can take your bikes up the Peak Chair. I'd recc'd a big bike though, because it'll be about at least 45 mins to the bottom!
Apparently if you ride in Singing Pass and the rangers catch you, they take your front wheel. I think that's worse than a fine!

smoke. I believe you moved to West skank, no?;) Is Mcdougall rim still open to MTBing. that's an easily accessible ridge ride. 13km up and 11 down. right back to the car. watch out for cougars though.. :0

McDOugall Rim is open for riding. It and the crawford trails are the only "alpine" area kelowna rides

technically, even with a guide on getting to the peak, you only get to ride frontier pass/hwy 86.........

wicked! thanks Sharon. a couple of us are planning a trip through the interior this summer and that was one of the rides we wanted to return to.

McDougall is still snowed under at the top. We're planning on hitting that one in a couple of weeks. There's also Smith Creek, which may go down tomorrow. No idea what either one are like.
Oh and Sharon, keep on believing that that's all the high country riding out here.
Because that's all there is....
really.

really? I mean like within half an hour of kelowna? is there anything around Big White etc - isn't the okanagan a sun-facked strip malled hellhole? Guess you'll have to give up the goods

you got the location right there boys . . . . .the trail is along the eastern ridge of piccolo . where it comes down into burnt stew basin there is a junction to either go back towards the ski area , or head out over the musical bumps .
at that point , technically not a poach . . . . .

I was a fussier rider then! I'm much more inclined to enjoy it all now. Then it was all about adrenaline.

K-town gives me the willies. but if you've ever flown into Kelowna you'll see nothing but oppotunities. if gas prices go through the roof this summer I may put a big northern line I've been eyeing on the back burner and do something closer... there is a lot of ground out there that dosent get much attention. just waiting for the snow to move up a bit to start scouting...
