Pist-n-Broke is goin HD for 07-08, and we are stoked..........this would be a good place to hear any ideas from you cats.

This BB is definately the best place on the planet( annd outer space) to get the skinny on DVDs so lets here it.

I am willing to slide a DVD or 2 to the cat that finds that pic for me.

I've tried but I dont do the net good.

The Sombrio Cam was killer. I like the idea of seeing the festivities before during and after.

Too bad it is has been removed from the Sombrio Page.

If you are taking about the Video Teaser... don't give away too much. Keep it simple... but don't use the big shot that is going to be the centrepiece of the film. Try and not use any of the footage in the teaser that you are going to use in the film.

That way when you are watching the film you don't get the "hey I have seen this feeling".

CKD 1 was good, can't wait for 2.

Cheers!

Some innovative shots that somehow capture that feeling of hitting a corner and having the suspension compress, load up and fire you out of the corner... maybe a chest cam? Shots that capture a long section of trail rather than a single hit, love that stuff.

Just keep doing what you're doing. The combination of top level riding, great filming (without getting too artsy) and the usual fantastic soundtrack.

I would love to see a film try and capture the absolute essence of the shore. The incredible steep rocky jagged root infested rockfaces nestled deep in the dark, green, wet forest. Big natural lines. I just don't know if that translates to exciting video footage.

We just don't need to see you teabag Klassen again.

Two words - Music...

I'm already putting together a list for you. I've got a localish band in mind that will probably work out pretty well.

My favorite videos of all time are generally really old Mack Dawg and any Transworld vids. They're definitely not afraid to mix things up a little bit and it can really change the feel of the video.

Not that I haven't told you all of this a thousand times before.

These are mine:
Lines instead of single hits. Long trail shots instead of quick corner clips. Basically, less ADD-fest style editing.
Also, don't over-edit, I can't stand when videos have unnecessary effects and things that just don't have a point. And please, take your time filming and make sure that you have enough good footage to put together to put together a really good movie. It's so annoying when you spend 20 bucks on a video that has a ton of so-so filler footage. Also, Bad or unfitting music can ruin a good part. So pick good music.

These are just for bike movies in general, you guys do a pretty good job on a lot of the points.

Big burly natural lines. Forget the DJ's and one hit wonders, stuff is played.

Every grom with a DSLR is killing the whole flying monkey in jeans scene to death.

Whole lines top to bottom. How about not just huge pro lines, but pros ripping a trail that the rest of us might actually ride? ie how would Wade rip CBC?

And like most have said before a killer soundtrack. But don't try to do more than one style of music. If it's gunna be mellow soul music stick to it, or harder hitting mellow. Should flow like a great mix tape. Yeah remember mix tapes hhahah.

please NO SLO-MO. nothing makes me fast forward quicker than a 30 second segment dragged out to 3 minutes because of slo-mo.

sweet thanks crew, a good read for sure.

We are going to create a specific myspace site that will allow all of you to network with anyone involved in the making of CKD2, bands and music suggestions are always welcome.

here's one: do a cable-cam on my trail

really music is a biggie. and some slo-mo is ok, but keep it infrequent. like 5 seconds or less at a time.

I'll think about this.

I'll confess I have not have the privilege of seeing CKD although out of any movie that has come out recently it looks the most promising and I have heard nothing but good things about it. I think lots of good points have been made already in relation to slo-mo and music, although I understand that the latter is by far the most difficult and in the end the ruling on whether or not the music was good is entirely subjective. As a disclaimer I'll say that I am fairly particular about what I like and what I don't like so this may or may not apply and as mentioned above I have not seen CKD (have seen bits 1 & 2 though) so these may or may not apply

1) Please use voice over VERY selectively. Unless there is some revelation that must be made or it is very funny etc.. I could care less what the rider has to say. More often then But the people will more often than nought they end up coming across as either A) and uneducated person whose idea of reading is glancing through a Maxim (read: "Stoked" etc) or B) some kind of struggling poet you feels it is necessary to try to describe the "art" of mountain biking.

2) Everyone is pumped on cable cams these days. Honestly, in some circumstances there are better shots that won't come across as looking like you used a cable cam for the sake of using one.

3) Be patient in putting it together. Judging by the amount of work you have put into CKD i'd say you have this down

4) Do not, under any circumstance put a shot in where the rider did not land cleanly (tailwhip in roam, porter's hand plant in K6). It not only looks lazy but also makes the rider look bad.

5) originality in things that are shot. I'd say you have this down and in general mtb has gotten away from this problem which plagued an earlier generation of videos. However, it might be an idea to hold some sort of competition for builders who are interesting in getting some of their stuff in a video. I'm not too sure what you could provide as incentive, perhaps utilize your video's sponsors for this. And give them more props than some half assed acknowledgment in the credits.

6) Some things are fun to ride but I don't want to see them on film, although this is entirely subjective and you can't please everyone.

There might be some more but I really can't think of anything right now.

better make sure Ambrose is reading all this.....I much prefer to hear folks talking in this respect rather than critiquing actual projects.

Honestly my vid formula is simple, as long as I'm stoked on riding I can get others stoked with my(our) work. Some people take it a bit too serious and forget that it is once a year kinda thing that should be first and foremost fun.

and as far as the whole Collective/ROAM thing. I love what they do, but it often appeals to a more educated audience( read older...) and alot of kids/teens I know find it really dry. Personal preference of course, but at Pist-n-Broke we are much more concerned with keeping younger kids and teens stoked. Thats why we put in the impossible situp....lol

WHERES CAM AND HIS BOWL OF GRANOLA IN ALL THIS??????

A guy at work actually got burned with that at lunchtime in front of 20 guys. He quit.

Awesome idea about trail builder's competition. As the sport evolves trail building is having more and more influence all the time. Almost like a developing niche in the industry...

I'd devote at least a full week to that cause. Theres alot of talent out there and most of us are willing to break our backs for a vid parts, and immortalize your work...

I was diggin' the tunes on CKD too. Older stuff is good and hip-hop has it's place but it has to match up and it seems really easy to over-do.

As well as innovative music you have to have innovative lines, which ties back into the trail building.

Also, I'd like to see more trail ripping, stuff the masses can relate to a little more than 360 road gaps (which was sick btw)

despite this being my first posting this site has entertained and informed me for years-special thanks for the laughs.
This thread is the first one that has me itchin to repond, I guess because not only is everyone a critic, but perhaps a director too! For what it's worth...
There must be a thousand riders who could be fast and flashy if they could ride a specific line 10 times with the camera's rollin. I would really like to see at least one first run/attempt from every featured rider so as to witness some raw, unpolished, bike handling; that's what is unique to any individual rider. The simple mention of a captured scene done on the first take stands alone as impressive.

WHERES CAM AND HIS BOWL OF GRANOLA IN ALL THIS??????

You know where we sit already - my bowl of granola and I that is.

If you really want to know, I'd like to see long shots of really twisty singletrack. Not A Line wide - bar width, in the trees Star Wars style ripping.

Obviously this is a challenge - to get long shots in the trees - but if it wasn't a challenge what would be the point?

There is nothing like ripping long, twisty single track through trees. Take all the trails that I rode in Ontario and put them on a mountain. They can be found in places. They are super fun!

I really really like the shots when they come across a low lying area that is covered in ferns. I rode a trail like that a few weeks ago and I can only imagine how difficult it must be to ride when the ferns are full grown. You blaze (ride not smoke... as Smokey the Bear says only you can prevent forest fires!) through the trail... with just enough sight through the ferns to see the trail. Being the second one in line is rough as they all sway back and forth... I miss summer now!

Star Wars Styles... that should be on a tee-shirt!

Marc Beaumonts section in Earthed2 and Fabien Barels section in Earthed3.... nothing beats ripping loamy singletrack on film for me. Get the Cove DH crew to rip it up for a section but make sure the lines are fresh.

get a segment with the cove riders, cause they can ride.
dont zoom in on the rider like in NWD movies.
include more fisheye berm shots like in earthed1.
there is tons of music that would work well in your movie, but do you have to get rights for it? seriously i dont know
keep the riding in normal speed, unless you repeat something cool, like a bermslash, then slow-mo is acceptable.
if people are talking i find it is better to see them talk, instead of hearing their voices with a scenic backdrop.
more racing footage. you can always put it in the extras.
mix the music up a lot like in ride to the hills to keep the viewer attentive.
get some footage of some awesome bmx trails.
have some alpine riding with fog.
mix up the locations. there are good places on the island.
somebody pulling a crazy trick would be nice.
try and match the music with the speed of the riding.

yea ok!
