A big thank you to all the volunteers who helped at today's Ripper  I personally thought it was extremely well organised, and all the vollys made the tough riding easier to handle.
And to James.....although I cursed your name several times throughout the ride, it was a great course  The course markings were also very well done.

Thanks for organizing such a great race. I'm glad that I had an opportunity to do it at the last minute. Next time I don't wait for it to sell out before trying to find my ticket to ride.

the "Steel Balls" award goes to Brian Earle, who not only rode the entire course (solo) on a circa 1980's fully rigid bike with 1.9" tires and cantis, but pinned the Stairs of Despair when many people on big dualies were walking it! extra points for the fu-manchu & hockey helmet!
see you all tonight!

I may have killed myself.
Broken my water.
Destroyed my body for the rest of the week.
Bled out my hand.
Lost my voice.
And made a total ass out of myself with my hysterical bear calls as I grunted my fat ass up the mountain on my fat ass Chaparral.
But, this was such an amazing experience. First time climbing Fromme, first time riding all of those trails and first time I learnt how to speak bear. I may have crossed the finish line with gnarly muscle cramps in both my calves with a rather nasty blood-covered bike and right hand but I finished. I finished.
Holy shit! I finished? Rode up the mountain and then back down? Yes. Did I really? Yeah I think I did! And I wasn't last either. Albeit I had to be tendered to by the various NSMBA and NSSR and RGG moms at the finish line, I accomplished what I believed was impossible. "Trying" to ride up the trail at the beginning of the race, I was thinking to myself that there was no way in hell that I'll be able to get all the way up to the top and then back down. Many grunts, steps, revolutions and pedal strokes later, I was past the tent and at the entrance to Seventh. Wow. Riding through the fog, finding my way only by listening to the rider in front of me.
Whew, breathless. I'm stoked, did I tell you guys that?
I'll see you all at the afterparty! Now, I'm going to catch some Zs.
And I am stoked. Before the pain had set in after the finish, I was grinning ear to ear, well, amid all the grimacing and attempts to lose the pain.

So how was the hand? They sure wrapped you up when they were helping you out after the race!
You sure were quick off the start too... what place did you start in? I think I managed to be one of the first 10 riders into the trail! Really quite funny! :)
And who actually got last in our category? I missed out on that... :(
The afterparty should be good, I'm excited, I've never been to one before!

Excellent day out there. Big props to everyone including the volunteers, organizers, all the great sponsors, etc. The event was carried off flawlessly.
All the "switcheroo" antics at the start were priceless. Hopefully the few people who got away clear at the beginning enjoyed the room to maneuver. :)
Lots of legwork required from the closely packed bunch in the opening segments of singletrack, which made it an all-around fitness challenge on the up portion. The downhillers looked looked like they had a lot of work to do also with a couple of pretty good climbs mixed in.

Hand I had to deal with 2 weeks prior. It JUST healed too. Fudge.
I was at the BACK of the pack hoping I wouldn't have to deal with all the uber hardcore and competitive lycra clad Lance Armstrongs up front. Then BAM, race starts and everyone turns around and I'm pedalling for my life as I hit the trail in SECOND place. That lasted about 20 seconds before all the crazy XCers flew by me like I wasn't moving at all.

wow. awesome race (ride...) today!!! I had an excellent time for sure. it was my first ride ever on fromme too!
kenny is an animal. a deranged, driven dedicated animal. good work finishing solo in that condition. and way ahead of last place.
mens last anyways...
who's going to the afterparty that I can hitch a ride with (that won't be drinking)?
I didnt go to the race, I was soo beat up that I could barely move. I feel really old, even though I'm not. :( Can I still come with Hack On Wheels to the afterparty?

Yeah, you said that it had re-opened when you went by on Leppard. That is never fun. But I must ask, do you not like wearing gloves? I know that mine have sure taken a lot of scrapes and cuts for me.
Haha, yeah, that's why I was at the back too! The start was a little bit more intense than I was hoping for... Haha, it was funny having almost all of the XC guys behind me... likewise, it only lasted for a short time. And you were in second place? That is awesome!

It was a great time, TheRob and I were right at the front at the original start line dishing out some intimidation to the lycra's, which conveniently placed us square at the back of the bus when we had to turn around.
Kenneth's an animal. When I passed Judy she said he had crashed, I just started laughing. When I got to the next marshall just before entering back on the road I asked her if a little 3' tall asian kid just came through, she replied "yes, I told him the medic is right at the road just ahead of him." That's when I knew he crashed really bad. When I got to the medic he says "That kids got balls of steel, he wouldn't let me patch him up" So for all your pain and agony Kenneth, I still couldn't keep ahead of you on the BP. Good Job!!
Thanks to James, the NSMBA, Endless Biking and all the volunteers for making the day a success.
My highlight of the day was getting the opportunity to follow Wade Simmons' wheel for as long as I could keep up. Unfortunately he was just coming out of Leopard and climbing to Pipeline as I was doing the climb up to 7th
I didn't stay close for long. :P
I'm not sure if I'll make it to the afterparty tonight, so y'all have fun!

One moment, I'm sound asleep at home. The next, I'm in a rain forest on my bike. I'm breathing hard as I try to keep up to Batman and Robin riding a Norco tandem. Where the hell am I?
I awake on my couch with fresh cuts in my legs and that feeling you get when a Mack truck hits you.
Wierd man. Gotta lay off that late-night television.
I had a blast in that, my first ripper. I liked the motivation of the race that kept me pedaling when I might have otherwise taken a break. The course was great and the course markings were really clear and visable...and what about that break in the weather. The mist in the trees gave the whole thing a great classic shore feel.
Thanks to all the organizers and vollys. See you at the next one.

really this was only the second bike event I've ever entered, and the only way that it could have been better for me, is if I wasn't stuck behind ridicules amounts of people at the start of the "ride".
that was rather annoying.
but this thing was awesome to be a part of.
major props to all who made the event work.
and I'm still seeking a ride to the afterparty...

those guys ruled man, they were kicking ass on the uphill, but it looked liked the DH was posing a few challenges...I can't even imagine. How would that tandem take the pipeline rock roller?

Man, what a day. The weather was awesome and the vibe was perfect. I'm happy, I met my goal of not being last in the solo category....although just barely.
What a way to spend my first shore ride of the year. I was so out of shape. My thighs still feel like they're burning acid every time I stand up. I barely rolled over the finish line.
Super props to Batman, Robin, Joker and Catwoman. Batman and Robin ripped it up on the tandem.

What was the course? Sounds like a great day and the weather seems to have worked out great for you guys this year!!
The uphillers started on the road, got turned around and went back down and into the BP (I think) and then onto Upper & Lower Griffin (I think), back onto the fire road at the water towers, then on to roadside attraction, back out at the 1st switchback, fire road up to between 4th & 5th switchbacks, then onto Warden's Trail, back out onto road above 5th switchback, then all the way to the transfer spot just before 7th. The downhill was 7th, Leopard, fire road back up to Pipeline, BP to the fire road, with the ending at the water towers.

you should have been there. it was pretty funny to see the reaction of xc guys in front of me. sheer panic and urgency on their faces as they grabbed their bikes and ran though the crowd.
I, on the other hand thought James was joking, so I got stuck at the back. but I squeezed on to the trail at about 1/3 behind the front.

I rode the DH and I pedaled WAY too hard at the begining so I was out of breath the whole ride down then I hit the "wall" at the up hill to pipeline (not the greatest feeling)... What a great day!! Kudos to everyone who raced--won't be me anytime soon!! Maybe I'll be a bunny ear wearing marshall instead.
The organization of such a big event is awesome--and the fact that there is absolutely no trace left behind. I came home Saturday afternoon and went through a neighbourhood where there had been a cultural festival on the street and there was garbage absolutely everywhere--it was really appalling. I really made me realize what a great job the organizers do here. congrats!!

And he's not even bleeding yet!
I was fast on the DH till I crashed... I was fast for about 5 minutes.

As my first Ripper... it would have been great if I could have rode it!
I broke my chain on the rip up to the first switch back... and was left to walk/run up to the 7th with my Lavender "not purple" Brodie Zealot!
Hey, that sounds very familiar! I am pretty sure that I was right behind you for the last switchback or so of the uphill... kind of funny how even though I was able to pedal, I didn't pass you! That says a little bit too much about my current level of fitness... but on second thought, I'll just blame it on my Banshee! :)

I was slow on the DH for about the whole way... it was enough to just keep ahead of you when you were bleeding, but after seeing your hand, I couldn't exactly stand to see a mangled person beat me. Whereabouts did you rip off the scab?
And thank god our category was so small!

kenny is an animal. a deranged, driven dedicated animal. good work finishing solo in that condition. and way ahead of last place.
mens last anyways...You say that like it's a bad thing Henry. Let me ask you this. How many of the hot female marshalls know your name? Huh? How many screamed "Yeah TheRob!" as you rode by? Huh? How many told you they'd "never forget you"? Huh?
That's what I thought.
You think it's easy coming in last? A walk in the park? Let me tell you. It's tough. It takes a lot of work. A lot of skill. A lot of determination. And above all...................patience. Lot's of it. There were times when all I wanted to do was saddle up and power to the top, but no. I resisted. I had a goal and that goal was going to be achieved.
Goal accomplished.
Thanks to all that volunteered. I think I'll do that next time. The course was tough. Especially the start of the climb. That is what did me in.
Favorite moment? I was pushing up just below UOC and some guy rides up behind me. He asks me if I'm in the Ripper. I say "yes". I ask if he is. He says "no, I'm the sweep and you're in last." It was one of the proudest moments of my mountain biking life. Something I'll tell my kids about when they start to ride. Something legends are made of.
Legends.

No body armour, but I'm a stickler for the rulebook Sven! XC helmet up, swapped for the fullface for heading down.
What is the deal with the results? I saw a spreadsheet at the afterparty, but will they be posted somewhere? I lost my battle for finishing last, but not by much.
the results are now posted in the front page article. looking good!
over 50 mins is "not by much"?
I just have to say. I was most impressed with the quality of the rock-work on 7th.
I am happy. but I can't find any pics of me! though I was seeing flashes go off constantly all the way down, I suppose I'm "too fast for the camera" as well.
can't wait (or maybe I can) for the super-D!

+ RepgangGANG for Jon-boy!
Thanks... BTW found the chain break later on..... at home.
I wasn't in a rush on Saturday morning. My moment of glory was at the start as I led the field into the BP. There was obviously a gong show behind me as it took a while to be over taken.
My darkest moment was catching my shorts on my shifter and hitting the deck on the uphill! I then rode the rest of the way not knowing that I'd cut myself pretty bad and needed three stitches in my knee!

I crashed 5 feet into the downhill, crashed again near the bottom of 7th, managed to get down Pipeline, and limped home in last place for the relay. Then I went in the Sun Run the next day. Now I can't walk anymore.
I thought I saw Sasquatch.
You’re so done, you dont stand a chance, I don’t think any amount of running or hiding can save you now.
I fell over like 3 times on 7th. Just from being cold, and only having 3 hours of sleep before the race.

Hey, at least you fell going down the mountain. I went head over heels going UP the mountain.
By the way...I noticed a couple flashes going off as I was going down but I haven't seen any pictures of me. :( I was wearing a silver long sleeve shirt with the sleeves rolled up I think and a black Bell full face and army green shorts. If any of you photographers got a picture of me too crappy to post on the internet, just send it to me anyway. Thanks

Ditto that, I was wearing a grey XC lid, long sleeve blue spandex shirt with white stripe down each arm, and an orange On Top jersey on for the downhill. No pads, and riding a Banshee with a white and red Boxxer up front. Good or bad, I like any pictures of my self, being the narcissistic bastard that I am!

That's because you were cold from not climbing (LEARN TO PEDAL UPHILL).
But then again, pudding is best served cold.

Well you see, my seat post is only 3" long, so with my size small frame I can’t get it height enuf for proper climbing position. I also don’t have a front derailer, and I like to use a 36t chain ring as well. And I don’t think my rear derailer can go all the way up to first gear ether.

I dont have a front derailer, i have 38 tooth ring with a chain that skips and i can still ride up fromme after riding up mountain highway. oh and my bike is 50LBS and doesn't have a seat post either. Just do it.
