So basically i got a old beat up bike for free, and i had the intention of using it just for around the neighbourhood, and not have to worry about locking up my big bike, as well as trying to save some gas. Ive pretty much got it all together except for a cassette. Now i was hopin to just throw a old cassette i had laying around on there, but its all like crazy and old and i dunno what to do. so i was hopin someone could point me in the direction of the cheapest possible cassette that will work, i really dont care if its old and heavy and rusty, w/e. Not having 1000 bent teeth would be nice though. any other great ideas are welcome too. heres some pics, cause i know "old and crazy" doesnt really help. just confused about this hub and threaded cassette thing. Thanks so much for any help.

Its a thread on cassete, you'll get five gears on the back. Take it to a shop and order a new cassete, they are really cheap. About 20 bones.

another question, trying to figure out what size tubs to buy. the tire says 27x1.5 or something but all the tubes are like 700cc, or numbers like that. how do i know which size to buy

if you get a new cassette in the back you will need a new chain and chainrings in the front or else the chain will skip.

dont buy eny thing. you need to spend some money on your real bike. me and jake cant give you every thing. ask john, i bet he has parts you can use for that thing.

I believe 700c tubes will fit fine into 27'' tires.

dont worry, this is money saving. ie gas, and i already have some tubes. and this is all free. hence y i want a old rusty cassette.

It's not a cassette, it's a freewheel. Maybe try Our Community Bikes?

if you get a new cassette in the back you will need a new chain and chainrings in the front or else the chain will skip.

All it will do is wear unevenly, and even then, odds are it won't even be noticeable on a bike that old. As SanRensho said, it's a "freewheel," not a "cassette," and Our Community Bikes on Main and 17th has heaps of them lying around. Freewheels are available in pretty much everything from 3-7 speeds.

We could also get into British vs. Italian freewheel threading, but realistically, if you're not switching back and forth all the time, it doesn't matter.

Why not just Rotafix (http://204.73.203.34/fisso/eng/schpignone.htm)the thing? :thepimp:

700c tubes will work fine on your 27" rims. 700c tires will not.

+1 Fixed Gear.

MEC also carries cheap 27" tubes ($2) and tires ($5), just in case those tires suddenly explode or fall apart on you.

Btw, if you're seat needs to be slammed down like that, the frame is too big for you. (Feel free to ignore this advice if you already know this or don't care.)

go get a bmx freewheel, thread it on there, adjust for proper chainline by spacing the middle chainring, you have a cheap and fully functional singlespeed.
27" tubes = 700 tubes. it just depends on the width.

fixed my problem. now i got a fixie, not really what i wanted, thought i really didnt want it, but its suprisingly fun to ride fixed. just got a bmx free wheel threaded it on there. i think thats about as simple as i coulda got. our community bikes didnt have any freewheels cept for new ones, and i didnt feel like paying. this works.

That's not a fixed-gear, that's a singlespeed.

That's not a fixed-gear, that's a singlespeed.

which is good, as threading a fixed gear cog on that hub would be sketchy.

um, pretty sure tis a fixie. i cant cost, i can pedal backwards. just a bmx freewheel threaded on, its not a bmx hub, so its just straight threaded on. why is that sketchier than other fixed gears? to much torque on that shitty hub? seems to be working fine to me.

How can you not coast, yet you can pedal backwards?

i meant, when i pedal backwards, i go backwards. obviosly i cant do both

if it is a freewheel, you can freewheel. otherwise it is a cog, and you need a lockring, as the backwards torque would just thread it right off the hub. the reason using this said fixed cog would be sketchy is that the threads and overall wheel would probably break fairly quickly as they don't look up to the task.
