Sterling has spoken.

Check out his rant about photoshop too. What do you think?

Money Shot Week 3 Winner. (http://www.nsmb.com/shore_news/week3winner_03_07.php)

yeah, Dylan you are slaying it.

I'm loving the bitchslap to the Ps'ers out there at the end. Anybody can monkey with their computer to make pics look better, it takes real skill to get it right the first time.

so i got the last honourable mention
so would the sequence be in the "bitchslap to ps'er"s
the DOF was the same for all shots and the only photoshop done was erasing layers?
and what are the general rules for photoshop and photography
whats allowed?
levels or curves
sharpening
dodge / burn...
i know many sites have regulations on the amount of photoshop done
maybe that should be a consideration for future moneyshots.
and ask the winners to produce the orig to double check
that they did not start out with a completley different image.

Sterl says:

Also - one note from me the judge this week. there were several other stellar #1 images out there this week and I had to hit the gong on them because of excessive photoshop. Images are way over-saturated and way over sharped and way over zoomed in on and re-composed. yuck. GONG!

hes talking more about changing the original photo by over photo shopping, not using photo shop to tweak a photo or assemble a sequence.

Sort of like this:

A little saturation goes a long, long way.

nice pics, and his comment at the end is worth being taken to every aspiring photographer's heart.

he is talking shop as in "craft". nice one. :)

and smoke, the ferns do they glow in the dark?

I like how of this shot of Ryder, fisheye or whatever isn't used 'to demonstrate size'. It looks huge from this perspective.

I don't like the jumbo tron though...

SL puts together some sequences occasionally and the fact that he chose a sequence as one of the HRs makes it clear he has no problem with that. No question he's talking about 'digital art' rather than photographic art. I also don't think he's saying that no photoshop should be used. When a photo is saved for the web there is an immediate loss of saturation and contrast when compared to the original image. Compensating for that so your shot looks good on a monitor only makes sense. The key in this case is not going too far so it becomes obvious.

Aside from Harookz our judges have been shooting since long before digital photography was the standard so they are bound to be purists. The upside is that using the light you are given is bound to make you a better photographer.

im probably gonna recieve alot of flak for saying this but i disagree with the decision made. although the winning shot is a very good riding shot i think it fails to capture the essence of what a photo contest should be. i think it isnt much more special than the vast majority of riding shots ive seen and that a more suitible winner should have been chosen. besides that this contest is shaping up to be the best yet! great work guys!

We're always stoked to have opinions - but yours needs more back-up. What is this 'essence of what a photo contest should be' you speak of? I'd like to hear the reasoning going on in the background.

Do you know why the live action doesn't match the big screen?

Exactly. I think RunG had a lock on at least an honourable mention for the way he's putting his shots together but blew it on overtweaking the pics.

Sort of like when Homer invented the make-up gun, but set it on "whore."

You accumulate some delay in video chain before it can be displayed on the screen, you'll see it in all the photos taken of that drop, Reid's B&W one has it too.

to be honest, i liked runner-up number two the best out of all of them. i often find i prefer that somewhat unpolished look to pics as it reminds me of taking shots with my riding buddies and it's easier to place myself in the picture. i have much more emotional attachment to the imperfect pics. for me, pics that are "too good" are hard to relate to, it's just an image.

All are great picks - but #1 is a bit busy for my liking. 3 is my fave in this round.

I also couldn't agree more with his comments on using natural light. I am so sick of the remote-flash-look that is so popular these days. Unless done really well, the riders are usually too hot and just end up looking like they were ps'd.

um because the screen is always delayed alittle bit than what is actually happening...

there wasnt any sarcasm, i just said cuz the screen was delayed, alot of people have asked me the same question before.

Guess I misinterpreted the "um" and "...".

Back on topic. Great pics everyone. Thanks to Sterling for the photo notes as well. Gives everyone a better understanding of why the top ones are chosen and why others are not.

i guess my comment wasnt backed up that well. maybe im used to the other contests ive entered. what i meant by essance is the purpose of it. In my opinion a 'winning" photo should capture an image that is unique in its own, eather by captureing a unique situation that could only have been seen through the eyes of that one photographer. or a image of something seen in a different prospective. if that makes any sence. it does in my mind. the reason i disagreed with the winning image of this week was ive seen a million pictures like that one. and it does not inspire any aw in me. although in a technical prespective it is an exellent shot, although it may be a bit crouded as said in a previous post

To me a picture is used to tell a story. The winning photo has a beginning, middle and you can use your imagination for the ending. Works for me.

great contest, wish we could organize something like that also in Italy.

Best sentence goes to SL:
First off, props go to Ryder Kasprick for killing it at Crankworx this year and making an image like this possible. The photographers come second in priority in contest photos like this.

If we ever met I'll offer you a beer (german one).

Ciao Cam!

Ciao Marco! Ci vediamo a Cortina D'Ampezzo? O forse a Saalbach?
Spero di si.
