just looking for my first road bike or perhaps a fixed gear bike. Not looking to spend to much money anywhere from 100-500 dollars. Ive started checking some sport swaps, any other ideas of places to check? It needs to be not too heavy and basically not a total piece of crap.

I just bought a Bianchi for $300 at CheapSkates in Dunbar. Will be converting to fixed gear soon.
Sports Junkies on Broadway (by MEC) had nothing down in our price range.
sport junkies, cheapskates, craigslist. also check out the Bike Kitchen at ubc, I got myself an Apollo Prestige frame for $20 and built it up.
I have a near new 2007 58cm Paddy Wagon I will let go for cheap. No pedals, comes with extra 18t freewheel so it can be ridden in the hills.

well nsmb buy and sell - usually more expenive that 100 - 500 bucks (but hey you get what you pay for!)
Craigslist for sure. i bought my roadbike on there last year (a mint o4 cramerotti) for $500 from someone who was moving within a few days and needed to sell asap!
also try cycling bc classifieds, and the MEC one as well.
good luck!

$100-500 is kind of a wide range.
I've seen complete, utter junk pawned off for $100-150 and some truly great deals on older bikes in the $400-500 range. $500 also gets you a newer entry-level bike (on the used market).
What will you be using the bike for?

FYI- come mid april norco will be selling sub 200 dollar wheelsets meant for fixed gear conversions.
wide flange hubs with flip flop threading on the rear hub for different cog and freewheel options.....
another vote for craigslist, I just offloaded three bikes from my stable on there and it only took four days.

If you're not familiar with road bikes, run it by the board first. So we can tell you to get a bike that fits.

Yeah sounds good. I dont know a ton about road bikes. Does this one sounds good?
The step through is lightweight, road tires, just tuned up w/ comfy seat, new brakes, new tubes. This is a really nice ride
Mens, all tuned up, new brakes, for a taller guy 5'10' to 6'
Asking $120 each

^^ No! Its $120! that is not a "good road bike". I havent seen anything worth splashing the cash on from clist for less than 200.

As much as I like craigslist, is it just me or do people seem to over price their beater road bikes? I've seen some pretty manky bikes being sold for $100-250. If I were going to spend that much on a shit bike, I would just get one from Canadian Tire, atleast it aint rusty.
Moral of the story, be careful on craigslist if you dont know much about roadies.

Unless you know your bikes and can distinguish between what can be fixed/upgraded and trash, I would stay out of the under $200-250 market. This is particularly true of CraigsList, where everybody tries to sell their beater "10-speeds" from 20-25 years ago for $150.
Step up to the $400-500 range and you can get an older bike with higher-end components, or a recent entry-level bike with STI shifters (Sora/Tiagra level--perfectly functional and usable). The latter will be easier to unload if you want to move up to a better bike at some point.

There is one Craigslist flipper in particular, who always posts from "Vancouver Downtown," and attempts to take advantage of newbie riders by touting his bikes as being "freshly tuned," "very fast," and so on. Duder is trying to get $280-$480 for 20-year-old Shimano Tourney. You can usually spot his scam by the pictures - all of the bikes are shot in the same interior locations:

There's also another sketchy seller in Strathcona who always claims to have "no pictures" of various cruisers and "vintage" 10-speeds. Flag the ever-living f**k out of them. That's how we got rid of the "DeD Metal Cycle Repair" spammer.
Our Community Bikes will sell you a fair bike at a fair price. Come out to the Tuesday night HeyFixie! rides from the Science World gazebo, or check out http://fixedvancouver.com and someone will hook you up with a bro deal. Ditto mailing lists like Escape Velocity.
I can't complain about craigslist too much, though. I scored my Olmo for $250, and a friend of mine scored a Campag-drenched lugged Marinoni for $175. You just have to RSS feed or JUMP the second these deals show up, because they'll be sold within the hour.

Ya i decided to purchase the steamroller. It is on order and should be here within a couple of weeks. I checked out lots of used bikes over the week and there is nothing around at this time of the year. The only things around were falling apart. Ive heard good things about these bikes im looking forward to it.

Looks like a pretty good call. I found trying to find something on Craiglist pretty frustrating as well when we were looking for a bike for my girlfriend. Its great when you are just cruising and looking for a good deal (ie the ultegra brakes I picked up in Nov.), but when you are looking for something specific it can be frustrating. The Steamroller looks friggin sweet. Rad.

The Steamroller is a really nice example of the "street track" genre. Every Surly that Mighty Riders has been sending out the door these days looks dialed.
