Meh, not too stoked on any of the shots, I think 3rd place could easily have taken the win over the actualy winner. And I agree about metzger's t-whip shot, could have been a lot cooler if it wasn't so tight.

Surprising that the people's favourite (http://photos.nsmb.com/showimage.php?i=12262&c=57) didn't even get a mention. None of the selections made me want to ride my bike as much as that rock roll pic.

À chacun son goût.

Hey, you know my picks if I was a judge... Seriously,

How can you say no?

Pretty deep pool to swim in this year though. If the rest of the contest goes anything like the first week I feel sorry for the judges. You might as well just throw darts at your monitor to pick the winners.

the winning photos look like you would see them in Decline.... I think the above rock photo looks more original but judging photos is very subjective. Still solid choices.

I agree, this is awesome! It has a very cool feeling behind it and makes me want to get out and ride. But all the other photos are pretty solid. Tough choices. Id love to see a full size of the that rock roller though. Good job whoever did it.

Thanks :) I don't have the full size on my laptop right now but when I get home later tonight I can post up a larger size. Any requests for dimensions?

Here is the color version for now though.

Gottogobiking was my pic for at least mention! cripes! that 360 shot was just a plain snap - I've noticed a trend with the posted shots...air! It would be interesting to know if there is a score system associated with selection - like so many points for composition - etc... does that happen?
My advice - get a big flash and get someone jumping something!
ha ha none the less the winner is worthy - the others I'm not so sure...

3rd or 4th should of had that.

Interesting theory Jay ;) - but Ian didn't get any instructions from us about geographic profiling. Actually he didn't get any instructions at all beyond give 'er. I think we had an Aussie winner for the first round last year as well.

I wouldn't have picked the winning shot out of the crowd myself but I can see its strengths as well. A judged competition lets us see shots through the eyes of someone else - in this case an extremely accomplished professional photographer and photo editor. The best part of this is the opportunity to learn from his experience and improve our own shooting skills.

For the same reason it's also great to hear each of you explain your choices and contrast them to what the judges came up with. Please keep that rolling.

We could have done this as a popularity contest - most votes wins etc. but that doesn't tend to be very interesting. If you look at the RF UFC contests quite often the winner of a round bested the competition because his buddies or the community where he lives rallied around.

Thanks for all the input.

The second place shot just keeps me looking to the left, I don't even want to look at the photo, how is that framed well? The storm in the background is great and had it been framed a little different maybe..
but what can I say, I didn't enter and I can barely use a point and shoot.

I'm also a bit confused... Very glad of course that I came 4th, but personally I like this pic (http://photos.nsmb.com/showimage.php?i=12498&catid=searchresults&searchid=55300) a lot more, but thats whats judges are for I guess...

Also, the second place, feels like that would have been nothing without the riding, the picture itself isn't much to talk about, the horisont isn't strait, there is too little air to the left and the colors on the bike and rider feels very photoshopped.

Don't want to be a bad "loser", but thats my opinion. Third place is a lot better than first and second, and with much more serios photowork behind.

yeye, will be interesting to see how the next week turns out.

why is the riders left side of the handle bar "missing" on the winner?

Speed blur, it's so bright behind so the flash isn't enough to freeze the bar.

the cool thing about the national rockface pic is that it completely highlights how gnarly it is, really brings out all the grooves and lines and ledges.....rolling into it you never see any of that, experience/riding knowledge of that face is what draws a lot of us to it I think....

Yeah, the winner's baffling. Scroll down the page at the runners-up, and they keep getting better and better. The camera appears to be shaking, the rider's kit is boring, half the handlebar is obscured from blurring, you can't see the rest of the trail (is the rider just dropping in from 10 feet back? the brakes are on, so the rider may or may not be pinning it); to me it all adds up to a big fat "whoop dee doo!"

I'd Kjellman's in the best, followed by the tailwhip and the 270. Even Muller's shot is hot even if the moss isn't lit up and more of the trail isn't shown.

yeah when I had a look at the winners I thought to myself "you have to be joking".

The rockface picture was by far a 1st place shot in my opinion, as it represents the type of "feel" of the shore (north shore mountain biking.com)

Overall I was pretty bummed by all of the winning pictures, not a single one got me stoked to ride. Of course, that's what makes it a judging contest, everyone likes different things.

The handle bar in the winning shot looks really poor, I am quite disapointed with this weeks results.

kinda agree. the rock face pic can maybe only appreciated by someone who has some riding experience, as FlipFantasia posted.

Personally i kinda like the pic by Muller, not because he is from :germany: but rather the pic is a glimpse at a nice and mossy and rocky trail...maybe.

the others...ok, nothing i would have expected by I.H. himself. The last one is, well, kinda strange as well. Just because a trick is :rocker: does not mean that the pic is good.

note: i do not shoot myself. i just take a look at the pics from an artist's perspective (painting and drawing). and i have scrutinized (?) bike pics for the last 12 or so years. and thought why is this and that a good pic? what would i do if i had the technical skills... etc. The above mentioned is my personal opinon and i do not want to p*** people off. So please be not offended, Mr. I.H. :)

Just an observation. Is this not a photo contest? A contest being judged on photos. Not riding style?

If this is truely a photo contest then the honerable mention makes no sence in acordance with Ian hylands blurb on it.

I don't really like much about this photo as far as the light or composition, but the
360 is dope!

just my 2 cents. If he doesn't like the light or the composition ( which pretty much makes up a photo) then what the hell is it there for?

It's a bicycle photo contest, we're not shooting landscapes here, I think the riding is almost as important as the composition.

That's why it was honourable mention instead of the winning shot - or one of the ones that placed. Ian just wanted to slide it in there because he thought it was rad.

Maybe every once in awhile we should step back from competing and taking this seriously and have a little fun. Maybe life isn't always about composition and lighting. I guess we're dialled to be competitive though - that's why we're still crawling around this azure orb.

At leat it wasn't "another" dj/crankworx photo, I dig watching it, but I'm over
saturated with it for now. I want to see trees and rocks and stuff...you know
stuff you'd see on a mountain.

Though I do agree, the rock roll at Nationals is just gnar.
