View Full Version : Canada Wide Bike Registry

Ok here's the deal.

I work in a bike shop, and there's a lot of suspicious bikes rolling thru for repairs and parts.

I built this bike registry so we can all search (for free) whether a bike is stolen or not. No personal information is released to the public.

www.canbikeregistry.ca (http://www.canbikeregistry.ca)

But the key is we need to register stolen bikes, or bikes that we own here.

Any feedback is welcome.

Thanks all.

Looks like a good idea. How can we be sure this is legit and not some way of creating a list of expensive bikes and their locations?

Good Point Kye, but I'd say if your worried about it, only register your bike after it's stolen.

I made it possible to register while it's still in your possession, because most of the thefts I hear about, the owners haven't had the forsight to keep track of their serial numbers.

Get a police department (r.c.m.p., van) to support this and I am sure you will have great results.

Dax,

May I ask who you are. What will be done with the information gathered (I see no terms of use).

This simply looks like a complete 100% scam.

Please convince me and a lot of others that read these boards otherwise. As of 5 minutes ago ZERO people had registered. Why aren't your bikes registered, or your friends??

I am a very suspicious person and nothing about this looks legit.

Prove me wrong...I'll eat crow.

I dont think this should be stickied, unless it is 100% legit. The possibilities of people getting scammed are huge.

Thanks to Cam for making this sticky, he can see the possibilities of a system such as this to help curb the theft problem, or at the least help recover some stolen bikes.

I can't stress this enough, but if you don't feel confident in the system.
DON'T REGISTER YOUR BIKE!!!!

If you have some positive feedback then let's hear it.

I invested my time and money into this project because I can see it being a viable resource.

I just had a meeting with the local community police, and RCMP auxillary looking for some ideas to make the site useable, legal, and safe for the public. As well I have shown it to some of my sales reps for feedback from some of the more prominant Bike Manufacturers and Distributors in our Country. Awesome feedback so far.

I have a lawyer working on terms of use, disclaimers, and statements of privacy as we speak. The site has to start somewhere, and here is where it starts.

I work in Freedom the Bike Shop in Penticton,
I instruct and train youth riding skills and proper cycling etiquette
I build and maintain Okanagan trails,
I am an iterim Director with our local cycling club,

What are you doing to help curb bike theft?

What a wondeful idea, it warms my heart that thousands of bikes can now return to their sullen former owners.

The points some of you are making are 110% valid. Know where your info is going before you give it out! The bad guys are way more organized than you think...
The ONLY registry program out there so far that is worth anything is Property Cop. It was started by a Vancouver Police officer but is a completely independent non-profit that creates a database that the police can access but not make changes to. You can register anything with a serial number so that if the police ever come across an item, they can find out who the last registered owner for the item was and contact them, possibly resulting a possession of stolen goods charge. Imagine a crack house the police raid and find dozens of iPods, cameras, etc and they could actually follow up on each item so the s*^theads actually get charged and go to jail?
So use Property Cop, it's a great idea.

property cop seems like a great idea. seems they want it world wide, i don't know if a toronto cop would ever go there to look for my stolen bikes.

regardless, i am going to register there i think. the fact that it is a cop run deal makes me confident that someone isn't using it to get my info.

Turn the F#$%^&s in and stop pretending to help!

Turn them in for what? Talking? Planning? Then what? Testify only have them beat the charge then come after my head? If I can come up with a better solution than what I am doing now, I will gladly hang up my spurs and do something else. Till than, it ain't perfect but I will just keep doing the best I can.

Yup, hang up your spurs, somewhere along the way you became one of them.

Yea buddy you seem really legit

Turn the F#$%^&s in and stop pretending to help!

It's interesting that you would automatically think that none of these guys have been arrested or investigated because of information from me. But you can be absolutely certain of one thing: I would much rather have 15 year old bloggers whining like little babies about what they don't know about than some professional criminal straight out of a year in jail pissed off and looking for me because I was stupid enough to admit on an open forum or on the news that I helped the police arrest him or his cohorts.
The fact that I nearly screwed up my life 11 years ago only helps when dealing with these low life's. I now refer to running Bike Rescue as doing the penance of my choice and I love what I have been able to accomplish.
My favorite quote of late is based loosely on something from my favorite movie: "My faith does not require others to believe".

Cheers!
