i know what depth of field is. I know all there is to know about using it for simple things.

it's the more advanced things i am becoming interested in. for example, in the below photograph, the foreground is in focus, and so is the dog. But, immediately behind the dog, the focus falls off very rapidly. I'm having a hard time getting my photos to do stuff like that.

bascially, i'm trying to put the "dog" at the very back of my range... I'm wondering how you folks go about doing something like that QUICKLY. practice?

i get the concept; i am just looking for pointers.

i'm personally just hacking it. I'm shutting down the aperture to about 10 or 11 and then focusing about 1/3rd of the way into the "scene". a lot of luck is involved. i'm sure there is a science to it, though...

another method i am trying to get to work is by using the DOF button and manually focusing.... but this offers mixed results, as it's not super easy to see through the lense when the aperture is closed off.

any pointers? comments?

You need to buy a more expensive camera, lens and remote flash setup.
Ask iMajin, that guy knows everything.

I'm gonna leave it at that for now, but don't worry... I'll come back later and edit in a few quick insults.

thanks dude.

edit:

"When the lens is focused on the hyperfocal distance, the depth of field extends from half the hyperfocal distance to infinity."

that's basically the opposite of what i want.

EDIT II:
reading more, that's what i do for shooting close range flash at night... because i can't see to focus. I just turn off auto-focus and i leave the camera focused at about a meter. at f10 this gives me a big DOF and i can just shoot without looking or focusing or waiting for asst'ed focus to do it's job. i didn't know it had a technical name.

.
its exactly what you want if you focus near the front of your frame

on the top of your lens you should have a hyperfocal distance chart. its easy to learn to read and once you do you don't need to memorize any formulas or lame stuff. first youll focus on the dog and see that its 4 feet away from you. then you'll stop down to f11 and then rotate the lens so that 4 feet lines up on the little chart with the end part of your focus range. and then the focus extends from right in front of the lens to 4 feet and everythign else is out of focus. its easier done than said.

i will take this moment to remind you to spend lots of money on my prints

It's pretty timeless, but the photography is old hat. It's gypsies now.

Also has that other guy still not left?
