Yah ross buy one ! Start out on like a cr/yz 125... unless your good at riding, than get a 250 2 stroke, or 450 4.

uh for someone ross' weight a 125 would be useless, its often harder to ride a 125, because they have absloudly no lowend, you have to have them pinned balls to the wall to get any where on them, where as a 250 you have a bit more lowend so its easyer to get outta bad situations.

i know people who have gotten bikes rite off the showroom floor,
put an hour on them and had them blow up.

How? Not knowing how to use the clutch? Riding at the rev limiter? Its not impossible, but modern day bikes are generally pretty good, provided of course they're blue and not red.

Run Motul T2, best shit out there with 94% octane, and your rockin, you will feel your bike get faster!
I told my buddy thats why his honda blew up wayne!
His Red has blown up 2x in the time I have owned my Blue, *knocks on wood*

i know a couple guys who have dropped a valve.
I also will admit we are pretty hard on our bikes out here as most of them only see Beach sand and thats about it, so your running the bike totaly wound for the hole ride. it turns out my buddy has Grenaded his piston, 2 chunks out of the top, all 4 flanges on the botton of the piston too, all broken off, and cylender gouged to shit.

I hope my 4 stroke lasts a long time. Lots of oils changes (every 5-7hrs) and regular maintainance and hopefully I should be good.
That's why I bought the Yami 250F, because all the stories I've heard of older bikes with lots of hours still going with valve clearances in spec. Can't go wrong with blue! I'm just trail riding, so I'm not hitting the rev limiter as often, except for the big hills where I need every bit of power that bike can throw out.
I'm taking off the stock 48t sprocket and putting on a 50. It should be pretty punchy at low speeds now.
Next is a YZF450 - Next year maybe? My friend Jason "Jethro Screech" Winters has a 2005 YZ250 which is a really nice bike. I would consider going that route too if the Yami 4 strokes weren't so bloody reliable.

2 strokes are nice as hell, but i find it really rewarding to have to work the bike, to get to the power like you do with a 2 stroke, but odds are my next bike will be a 4 stroke.

From what I hear/read, they had crazy explosive power from '02 to '05. The '06 is toned down a little and the '07 even more. Whatever, still a 50hp bike. I'm wanting the '07 that's for sure.

Corey would do a moto forum I'm sure (since he now owns a bike!!!, but the other admin dudes, probably not! Anyway, I'm not beating that horse anymore...
Freak, your age has nothing to do with what bike you should be riding, moreso weight and skill level/riding style. I'm sure you know that though. I have a slight problem when people recommend starting on smaller bikes to aide in your learning process. That may be true for smaller riders, but I think for a bigger/average sized person, starting on something bigger is a better way to go. It allows the rider to "grow into" the bike instead of outgrowing it. A bigger bike just has more there for you to use. I see all these bigger guys riding 125's and they just struggle with those things.
Its like a mountain biker recommending starting out on a hardtail - it may make you a slightly better rider in the long run, but who the hell would want to do that? :P
I love my 250F, it has a lot of low to mid range power (great for trails), its very light and can grunt through a lot of the nastys with ease. I would even say that low in the RPMs it has more guts than the 250 2T, but that disappears quick! I would like to have a 450 for some of the crazy Kamloops hills so I don't need to have my bike held wide open for such a long time. That's rare though. I rode my buddy's '07 KTM450XC and it was unreal. The power deliver was nothing surprising, it felt like mine with a little more depth, but it has the extra juice to easily carry you up the hills.

wow bringing back olllld thread
What Wayne and Cry say; get 250 two stroke and if its too peaky for ya, just drop the inlet, widen the exhaust a touch, open the read block a bit, up the compression 1/2 a point, advance the timing a touch, tighten up the squish a tad, re-jet it, and it'll be a torque monster.
250 double bangers are the mutts nutts. Sure, its nice to chuff up a hill but when you can braaaap...waaaaaaaa, omfg can I hold on to this s*cker ! , thats the way to do it.
So envious of you punks. Great pic's Ross, got any more?

Sounds like a lot of work. Older thumpers are cheap these days.
If you can find an Honda xr250 96-2003 buy that. They are six speed air cooled four strokes(NOT high compression). They require very little maintenance and are totally forgiving to learn on. The new four strokes are easier to ride than a two stroke. More torque means better hook up off the bottom and you don't have to be revved out make it go. A 125 two stroke needs to be ridden on the pipe to get it to really go. Two strokes are cheaper to overhaul when they blow up and no valve adjustments. We have got a pretty tight group of Mtb'ers here in Squamish that ride and build moto trails. SO much fun. Glad to see some positive posts regarding motos!
Was supposed to go rip on the trials bike this morning... it's a river outside right now and you'd be better off riding a whitewater raft out in Gold Bar... this'll have to do http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AHSbGWlFHU
