Sick Jay! I dunno if its my mac screen, but a few of them seem a bit hot (the flash) love the comp on all of them though nice work...Also good use of your flashes, Id just work on the settings on the flashes to make sure there properly set and not hot on the riders face or bike. Keep it up your KILLLING it

I'm just some old fogey who rips on a DH bike. My opinion in this area is moot. But you asked, I'll answer.
I have never cared for the flash. Still don't.
Pic#2...I hope the timing was off. If you want tables, talk to Romi or Chump. That one is only half way there.
I like the vibrance of the bike in #3 actually. #4 is sweet.....flashes aside.

Hey Mike, Thanks.
My monitors are calibrated with a spyder pro2 at gamma 2.2 (Industry standard for display). Mac's are out of the box at gamma 1.8, which makes the lights/whites brighter. Problem is, if you process at 1.8, all the PC users out there see dark images and the prints will come out dark.
The images (Besides alex's side in 3) are not blown at Gamma 2.2.

I would love to be able to shoot natural light in there, but it aint gunna happen. At ISO 3200 you can get 1/60 sec at 2.8. Everything is gunna be blurry. No question unless you panned shots for that blur, you would have nothing usable.
The shore is not Kamloops. It's the shore. IN winter...
When I come to the Loops, I'll shoot natural light just for you.
And as far as tables...yeah Axx can get em further. And well if Seminiuk got his any further, he have his hair cut...
The vibrance of the colors comes from the flashes BTW, tough to get colors to pop like that in natural light.

blah blah blah - number three is way too hot but that sure is a sick table with good height. Hopefully that kid kills it this year in slopestyle.

Somewhat unrelated, I like the your signature with the green rectangle on the Ian Nelson shot. It looks a little more interesting than the copyright symbol ones on the other shots.

Not defensive, Just explaining.
Can't shoot in the dark without flashes.
And your opinion is just as relevant as anybody elses.
I LOVE shooting natural light, but the conditions to do that in Kamloops are much better (No dark dank trees to shoot under) than they are on the shore.
thats all.

Yeah Ian and I dug for a couple of hours to buff up those two lines and build some drainage in. The hip line is pretty cool now.
We have to fix up the big set now.

I'm quite positive location has nothing to do with being able to properly expose a photograph.

Well FUCK I dunno.
If I balance for Mac, they are really dark on PC's.
The Histograms are fine. nothing is clipped.
my monitors are calibrated. When I switch over to 1.8 and Adobe 1998 on my Imac I can still see detail in the skin...yeah it is white, but I can still see all the features...At 2.2 calibrated they look just slightly over exposed (Read white ish not flesh toned) But both of those guys are pretty pale to begin with...

It looks as though somebody has finally taken over looking after the jumps. I am glad to see Blueridge jumps finally looking prime again. Who ever took over looking after them, good on you. Those pictures look awesome as well as the tricks being performed.

why can't one handed rodeo tables just be tables ?
because the extra shit ads difficulty and style to ordinary tricks.
those pictures are fucken nice.. lighting is spot on

You're definately getting better with the flashwork and composition. However, the shots are still a bit hot. Maybe check histograms a bit more often? And a rule of thumb, if the riders look like they have a bright flash on them when looking at the LCD screen on the dslr, then they are very likely to have overexposed areas when looking on the shots on a computer. The LCD screen on the dslr is deceiving, it is very bright. Same goes for video cameras too.
Monitor calibration will only affect so much. The exposures need to be nailed perfect on the camera itself, that way the file will retain enough data and will look a lot better on a wider variety of screens. Remember once you clip a highlight you aren't going to be able to get those details back, but if need be, you can always bring the shadows out a little bit.

None of the histograms were blown. That is my point. They were all pretty well balanced with a bell curve shape and within the whites and darks.
I agree with the fact that the skin tones are slightly overexposed.
The probalem I am having right now is that the Vivitar flashes I have as slaves are the 285's. They can only be stopped down to 1/16th power. I have been using them for side/under fill to rimlight the subject...In the forest however I have been shooting ISO 1600 at anywhere from 1/60 to 1/160 to get the ambient light to balance at -2/3 to -1 2/3 to freeze the rider. Issue is that at those ISO's and shutter I cannot get the flash stopped down enough. 1/16th ends up too hot.
I tried putting my stofen over the vivitar and it seemed to help reduce the amount of highlight. Moving the flash back is not an option sometimes...
I might pick up a used 430ex just so I have more adjustment on the power output and I can balance better.
Thanks guys, I always take the crit to heart.

Maybe then it'd be useful to put a piece or several pieces of paper infront of the flash to tone its power down. That or buy a reflector for pretty cheap and point the flash at the reflector. You'd get a more even spread of light too.

In the past I have used umbrellas to diffuse the light, it worked really well. I was just lazy and didn't want to have to set up umbrellas and shit all over hoodlums. Paper might work well, I'll have to give it a try. The stofen took a bit of the edge off.
The seminiuk pics were naked flash, the Axx pics had a stofen on the rimlight.
I'm digging the first can shot and Ian's second table. Impressive stuff.
