Just came across this frame and it looks great, but I havn't found too much info on the 'net about them. Is it pretty much just an all mountain frame or is it strong enough to be built to a light FR bike like the heckler? Looks killer, maybe this summer I'd buy one or something.

68.5 degree head angle is an XC figure these days? What happened to bikes?? XC numbers are usually 71HA/73SA, 68.5 is plenty slack for most of the riding happeneing now, still keeps it nimble enough to pedal---peeerfect

what about the new Giant Reign X series? I like the looks of them, the Maestro suspension platform looks amazing. Does anyone have a price on the frame only? around $1400 I'd assume?

I'd consider the Preston FR for what you described...

I've got my eyes on that Covert as well. Since it is a Transition, I am sure it can handle a lot of abuse. I would love to have that as a light AM set up.

I'm pretty sure the the Covert falls under the "All-Mountain" category, but it's becoming more and more common for "All-Mountain" bikes to also be referred to as "Light FR". Take a look at the 2007 Norco Six lineup, and as mentioned the Giant Reign X series, for example.
Frames like the Covert can be built up in the 28lb to 38lb range, with the lighter builds at the AM end of the spectrum, and the burlier builds towards the Light FR end. I wouldn't consider this frame to be an XC frame, as it's too heavy to compete with XC specific duallies.
I believe mudpuppy has been eyeing the Transition Covert and the Giant Reign X, so I'm sure he'll comment on these frames.

I got a ride on one last October, a preproduction model with Industry 9 wheels and an RP23 (I believe): it felt very XC. It climbed like a goat, was light and stiff and felt great on singletrack, but when I pointed it down a fairly adventurous semi-fall line traverse it was sketchy (and by that I mean skittery when braking, quick to slide, and pushed my CG too far forward for my taste). Of course the XC super-light build the Transition guys had going did not lend itself to that kind of riding, what with a long XC stem, the Industry 9 wheels and air shocks front and rear. For descending and my type of trail riding I want something a little different, so I wrote that one off the wish list and went for the Dirtbag (waiting to be built) to replace my DH bike (needed less DH and more FR, but still wanted a Transition) and found a good deal on a Coiler Deluxe to use as my trail bike. But that's just me. For weight, the demo model was somewhere near 30, probably lower. Nice bike, just not for me.

Its too XC
what gave you that idea? The freeride cranks? The 5 inch travel fork? The air shock with a remote reservoir? The slackish head angle? The 2 ring set up with a poly bash guard? The (probably) 2.35" tires? The 8" rotor up front? The raised seat post?
Of course, its too early to make any claims on the bike, but it sure looks the part of an AM/FR bike to me.

Looks like the new Devincis. I really like it.

yeah it looks great. After that review I'm not so hot on it. I think the reign is a better lightweight "all mountain" frame with a little more freeride tendancies.
