Good for the sport? Good for Radical Films?
What do you think about this? (http://www.nsmb.com/shore_news/zune_12_06.php)

I think it's the next step toward the over-commercialization of MTB and the loss of cult status. but that's just my bitter opinion.

that's awesome! Great idea!
It will expose lot's of people to the crazy freeriders. Too bad only 0.05% of riders could ride like that :(

The more people exposed to mountain biking = more people mountain biking = more happy people and more money being put into the sport = more better maintained trails and bike parks (bike parks aren't really all that common outside of BC yet), not to mention more races and comps with better funding. I think things like this are great. = :)

The more biking becomes mainstream, the more the community and camaradery disappears.

I think this is great for our sport, and great for radical films. If even 0.05% of people see the trailer and buy the film that is still 50 000 orders.
This means nothing but good things for us, and likely in non MTB rich markets.

Yeah, that's what posting too early in the morning does, messes up your decimal points. I meant five percent, but actually thinking about it that seems too high.

i disagree. it is what you make of it, regardless of popularity, mainstream acceptance, or commercialization. i've been riding mountain bikes since it was an obscure fringe sport, and the sense of community & camaradery has not diminished despite the evolving nature of the sport - these bb's are good evidence of that.

how can anything that raises mountain bike profile be bad unless we want to cling to exclusionist, elitist, or (big e) extreme horse crap.
Jeez, those trying to raise our sports profile can bust their heads against the wall all day long without hardly being noticed.....now the Big-M has given a platform where this can only grow from.
If you need any greater argument for having our sports profile raised, here it is......more consumers of mountain bike products means better and cheaper products. Simple supply and demand kiddies.....

it will probably be a good thing overall, but the problem is I *think* a lot of riders (myself included) like the fact that this is sort of an unknown (to most people anyway), fringe, "hardcore" sport with a small, core group of riders that has a strong sense of community. even if the benefit outweighs the harm of commercialization, it seems like a bad thing at first, to me at least. I don't necessarily want the sport to grow too much if it means being part of lame mainstream action sports media.

surfing and skateboarding have had some sectors of their industry shake hands with corporate america.things have worked out fine.
i am sure the same will pan out for mtb.

I don't think mountain biking is going to get crazy mainstream. I think it will get some great attention in the mainstream market but it will remain a relatively "hardcore" sport in a lot of ways, like skateboarding or bmx or motocross. Mainly because you can get worked mountain biking. Horribly destroyed, not everyones grandma is going to be blocking your ride down Joyride in Whistler.
Some attention for videos should do nothing but help the sport grow in a healthy way.

This is a typcial high-school comment. "I don't like this band anymore because they're too popular." You'll get over this when you get older and more mature. Biking will still be there for you.

I didn't say I wouldn't like it anymore, it's just something unique about MTB that I like.

This is interesting. It's great to hear all these opinions, and I don't want to change the subject, but Kudos bibszo: the only person so far to mention the other side of the story. So far, all I've heard is bad publicity for the Zune (iPod-light, iPod-late) and that it's full of bugs.
I wonder if Stacy Peralta or Christian Hosoi ever said to their friends "I don't think skateboarding is going to get crazy mainstream." or maybe both of them are sitting at home right now playing 'Tony Hawk's Project 8'?

ROCKIN' ROLLER
Exploits like this created an out-of-this-world reputation for Christian, prompting photo spreads of this hotshot in all the top skateboard magazines. Overnight, Christian was the guy in the skateboarding world. Buckets of money poured in from sponsors looking to cash in on Christian's raucous image. Jimmy Z clothing, Oakley sunglasses, Converse sneakers and Swatch watches paid him enormous endorsement sums. He was knocking down $350,000 a year before he was out of high school and a time when the average NFL salary was substantially less.
By age 17, Christian was completely on his own, living life like a rock star with an entourage that followed him everywhere. He leased a Hollywood Hills home that belonged once to the famous comedian W. C. Fields and settled into a routine. "I'd go out to eat with my buddies at Kantor's on Fairfax," Christian says, " 'clubbing' until four in the morning, sleeping a few hours back at the house, and then skating with friends on a ramp I had erected in the backyard."

where's the rest of Holmz story? You know, that part where he gets busted for drug trafficking in Hawaii and then comes out of jail straight edge and luvin' lotta Jesus?
Could be playing video games now - in between the odd pool coping grind.

Nice move for Radical!
Buuuuut:
more exposure=
more people, which =
more choads,
more riding buddies,
more advocates,
more users,
more user conflicts,
more money, which=
more events and races,
more equipment,
more show-offs,
more competition.
The plusses and minuses go back and forth on this one, for myself at least.
I'm looking foreward to the better equipment and dreading the user conflicts.

You don't see the issues with our sport becoming mainstream? You should try going to a popular surf spot in Hawaii or SoCal, the crowds are absolutely unbelievable. I for one can't wait until mountain biking gets as big as surfing, waiting in a line behind a bunch of thirteen year olds to drop in on my favorite trail on my cheap bike.

My point was that, no matter what side of the fence you sit on, freeriding could become super popular. It happened with skateboarding (globally), and according to Redsdisease, surfing (in Hawaii and Cali) aswell. Wether you like it or not, if the kids (http://www.groms.tv/) are into it, it's gonna blow up.

....okeedoke.....i'm gonna go practice my secret-trail society handshake and am gonna go back to hiding in the forest feeling smug in my exclusionist thinking....oh ya, I can't do that because our secret trails are considered illegal by the government because "they" don't understand the fringey nature of our sport and thus they want to chase us off public lands....and oh ya, I can't afford to ride because the nature of market economics in our fringey sport means retardedly high prices for the the things I need to participate in my sport.....

ok, so you want it to become as mainstream as possible because that would suit your needs. but not everybody has those problems with MTB as it is right now, so your specific wishes wouldn't necessarily be beneficial to all of us...
