Anyone use em? I just got a pair for my commuter. They can be kinda spendy. I got the middle of the road ones. Is it worth spending the extra loot on the Tungston studs?

What tires?

If you're riding on slippery terrain, get a soft durometer tire. Even with studs, a hard durometer tire is going to slip.

For commuting a nice $50 tire should do great.

or make your own there's a few ways of doing it and it's cheap ...

but as the previous dudes said, for packed snow it's useless. only on ice does it help.

Depends on what one uses as studs. I made some with longish screws and they dug in really well into hard snow and ice. But they weighed a ton and sucked on pavement or other hard surfaces. Used them once or twice and that was enough. There are better things to do when it snows, like skiing..

There are better things to do when it snows, like skiing..I don't think Fat Whacker wants to ski to work.

Michelins, Nevegals, or any decent tire with really tacky rubber has excellent grip on snow/ice. Unfortunately, if used on pavement they will wear fast, and in the case of Michelins, the cost is pretty high.

I ended up just getting some Innova ones. I think full pop they retail for $60ish per. Not the best, but then again I am not looking to go out racing in them or even trail riding for that matter. It will be used to bomb to and from work. Hopefully not ending up with me in a snowbank somewhere in between.
