Universal ships FAST... I've been buying pedals, HRMs and stuff from them. Pricepoint is also quick to ship to my WA address, they're in California.
JensonUSA and PerformanceBike ship from the east coast, by ground, it takes forever.

pricepoint is awesome, would use them again.
danscomp (bmx) was equally awesome and would use them again for sure.

Another vote for Pricepoint, although they aren't Canadian.
With all the LBS around, you should be able to get anything local, any smart shop owner should try and match prices with online retailers to try and keep the business local.

I'm a fan of all the above mentioned online stores as well as Beyond Bikes. They've all been excellent to me and I've saved a ton of money over my LBS. I would say an average of 50% saved on most orders. Maxxis tires for 35 US is a sweet deal.

I've never had slow shipping from Jenson; even with regular ground shipping (to the border, not across) it's always been less than a week... I was under the impression they ship from California -- that's where all of their storefronts are.

In my experience, Pricepoint has been excellent. The ground shipping takes about 8 to 10 working days, and you're only charged about $5 to $8 in handling by Canada Post.
Jenson has also very good. No issues.
For me, the choice between the two comes down to what it is I need, or what they have on sale.

If purchasing from the US.
Can someone explain how duty and taxes figure in to the total and when is it paid.

If its coming to you direct via UPS or Fedex whatever, there will be brokerage fees and GST, no duty on mtb parts but clothes yes, paid by you when they drop it at your door.
However, if you use Package Express in Blaine or Sumas or other similar service and pick it up across the line then you avoid the brokerage fee and I quite often get let off on the duty because they dont feel like doing the work for $6 on a hundred.
Strangely enough I bought pedals from chainreactioncycles in the U.K. and there was no charges at all. They were expensive too, go figure.
Overall its an awesome system if you pick it up yourself.

thanks for the info.
Unfortunately I am not near the border and I was looking to pick up some riding clothing including armor. Is there any way of determining what additional fees may be prior to ordering?

Brokerage
UPS - any where from $20->$75
Fedex - $20->$30
USPS/Canada Post - $8 for each shippment regardless of value.
Duty
Bike parts are usually duty free (GST only). As said above, clothing is about 8-10%. I think I paid 12% for a helmet.
GST is on the CAD value of the goods. You even pay GST on the duty, but not the brokerage.

USPS is slower, but hassle free and the least expensive. Brokerage fee is never more than $8, as ChunkyMonkey stated.
FedEx is fast, and the cost is reasonable.
UPS is relatively fast, the shipping cost is good, but they often attempt to screw you on brokerage.
My worst experience so far has been when an online store used DHL. I swear that the 1/2 dozen people I had to deal with at DHL were all mentally retarded. "This must be car parts - there are brake pads on the packing list."

Is there a good summary of fees associated with bringing products back to Canada? Particularly bike products.
I have always hesitated from buying products from the states because I figure I'll get leveled with duties and taxes and the likes.
Are there some products that are simply shipping costs and conversion?

I ordered lights and they were shipped via Fedex from the US. The brokerage fees and tax were $120 on a $269 set of lights. I got ripped off.

when ordering from the US i will not go with a company who will not ship via USPS.I'm leaning that way too. One time Pricepoint was trying to be nice and for free shipped me an item via DHL (much faster delivery), and I got screwed on duty. On my next order, I asked them not use use DHL, and they were quite apologetic (even though it wasn't their fault that DHL in Canada is run by morons).

Ordered a frame and a couple of small parts from Jenson @8:30am PST on Wednesday morning. Chose UPS 5-day ground shipping (only option available). The fine print said that brokerage was included in the $35 charge. I was skeptical, but figured it wouldn't be too bad. Hell I could always get the brokerage back from Jenson for false advertising.
Package arrived Thursday morning 11:30 PST at my office in Burnaby. That's a 27hr turnaround from submitting the online order to product in my hands:damn:
Only extra charge was the GST, which was expected. Absolutely gobsmacked.
