View Full Version : Inbounds avalanche at whistler

Got a couple pms here asking about this so thought I might as well cross post this from TGR

I don't blame whistler or patrol for this, it was snowing hard and the wind was loading the slope quickly. The peak chair got shut down right after.

Just remember the mountains are wild places and think before you jump into slopes. I certainly learnt that just because it's inbounds, doesn't mean you can ski anything and everything.

heres the thread on TGR

Reason # 41,834 to carry bacon in your pocket. Gotta give the avy doggies all the help they can get ;)

Those whistler patrollers are such slackers!

I always carry full gear on big snow days...

Hmmm...now wondering whether I need to get myself a transceiver for inbounds use. I've been thinking about getting one (as well as other bc gear) since taking an avy course, but due to the cost I figured I would just rent for the time being.

A question: would wearing a beacon inbounds be pointless if riding with friends who aren't wearing one, or would it be beneficial because of how fast patrol would be on the scene? The odds of getting caught in an inbounds avy might be quite low, but I definitely get my share of powder days in a year.

she-it...heard DM got buried in a slide while doing control?! Yikes, glad to hear he's okay......

to answer your question axis . . . . . unless you have a dog on the scene , and the whistler patrol has good ones , you try finding someone buried under the snow WITHOUT a transceiver . . . . . it ain't easy .

i'm telling you , as a dog handler , the avalanche beacon could and should put us out of a job . people at the scene , properly equipped and trained , are the avalanche victims best hope of a successful recovery .

don't get me wrong , i'd love to cap my dog career with a live recovery , inbounds or out , but i certainly don't want someone to have to go through the trauma , just so i have a story to tell when i'm old .

Rock the beacon and the bacon when charting unknown waters :).

Back in the 90's I think it was goats gully right under the old red chair pulled out completely ,the aviy guy who taught my course showed us a slide and I recognised it right away .This is not an exact science

I understand if you wear a beacon into the cafeteria at whistler and momentarily switch to recieve you will find that ALOT of folks are packing

should you buy as opposed to renting a beacon ... think about all the pieces of expensive biking gear you think nothing of dropping 500$ on to just abuse/break/toss.Then think about buying this one bit of gear which should last 5 years at least to save yer life ?

Without a beacon or a dog to find you they get a bunch of people to form a line with aviy probes and try to hit yer body .Note that this is like half an hour/an hour later when they get enough people to do a probe, as opposed to MAYBE yer buddy with a beacon who DID his practise finds you in 3 min or less and you are still alive ... see how long you can hold yer breath and go from there

We went out to stalk and kill an xmas tree last week and I was talkin to a couple of sledders at the P-lot who were just about to hit the high country after record epic dumps ,One guy was a tele dude I recognised and he had a beacon .The other guy told me it was on order ,these were the latest greatest BIG $$ 800cc mountain sleds but buddy hasnt got a beacon

go figure

you got it right there XXX . . . . the skiers are getting more educated / equipped / trained, while the piston hedds are more likely to be our " clients " .

i've even heard stories about guys putting transmitters on their sledds , but not themselves . . . . go figure .

I also remember a sledder telling me he had a beacon but he was getting a better one ... like technology, more power ,a better beacon is gona save yer ass out there ?The concensus I have heard is that 40% of the sledders are responsible users and the rest are not

really what will save yer ass is knowledge not technology but get the saftey gear ... beacon/shovel/probe

I use the Barryvox and it`s a great beacon. Able to easily switch between Analog and Digital good multiple burial destinction in analog mode. I highly recommend it for both beginners and advanced users.

I think Santa might be bringing the missus and I a pair of Barryovox Pulse beacons. Seems like they have a couple features that make them a bit more advanced than the previous Mammut Bariovox transceiver too... 3D searching, something to do with letting you know the pulse of the burried victim I think (I'm guessing so if you're looking for multiple burrials you dig out the living ones first) - I don't know all the details yet but it sounds cool...
