Hey!
So the year 2006 is coming to an end and although the new season wonīt start soon, Iīm sure many of might build up a new rig for 2007 this winter, so letīs hear what your 2007 build projects are!
My main project is a bikepark full suspension bike thatīs not too heavy, flickable but able to take relatively big hits up to letīs say 12 feet. So Iīm gonna order a Giant Reign X1 soon, use the frame, sell the parts that I donīt need and build up a sweet rig thatīs gonna be like this:
Reign X1 frame with a DHX 5 Coil, Fox 36 Van RC2, Chris King headset, Race Face bar and stem, Juicy 7 brakes, X9 shifting and drivetrain, Deemax wheels, Maxxis Minion TCPs, Race Face seatpost, WTB seat, Saint cranks, maybe some fancy Burgtec pedals and an e13 SRS.
Apart from that Iīll rebuild my Specialized p2. Right now itīs a DH / FR-oriented hardtail, however Iīm gonna rebuild it so that itīll be a sweet Street / DJ-bike. P2 frame, Pike 426 fork, Atomlab wheels and parts, Single Speed...
And depending on how much money will be left, I might be able to afford a Chromag frame. Theyīre finally available over here in Germany and since the shop I work for carries those bikes, I might be able to get a good deal on a Stylus. So Iīd build up a dark blue Stylus frame with a white Travis 150, Mavic 721 wheels, Race Face cranks and some other spare parts. Sounds like a dream rig to me, maybe Iīll be able to build up one.
So letīs hear about your projects!

My projects are to:
Build a chain guide for use with a front derailure
Build some better battery holders for my bike lights
Build some LED bike lights
Get my trail absolutely dialed.

I did a few iterations of the same, I took measurements off an E13 DRS to start off with, then modified it appropriately. I still have the Solidworks files if you wanted them as a start point. I gave up trying when I found the Blackspire Stinger though, for $30, it's not really worth the time for something that works better than an E13.
Were you going to make an LED array, or a single high-power light?

I can take my E.13 DRS off and let you take dimensions or whatever else you need if you want it Dean. Let me know. I'll be riding my Six for most of the winter probably.

Is there any issue using the Reign for WBP and other hard freeridish trails given it's leverage ratio (2" shock to 6.75" travel)? Usually bikes are designed to have less than 1:3 but this would have 1:3.375 (1:3(3/8)") Just curious.
My buddy told me the shock throw - perhaps he's mistaken (he was trying one out at his LBS and had asked them)

yeah Dean Steve's BS guide is pretty nice, and comes in just about any bb pattern.

I built a 3W Luxeon Light a while back, it works pretty well for commuting, but not super bright for night MTB rides.

Yeah, Iīm kind of wondering about the same... In general Iīm not sure how much abuse that frame is able to take. According to Giant itīs an all mountain bike that you can easily shred down the hill, but I doubt that this includes taking big hits... However considering that Kurt Sorge jumped the sh!t out of his Reign, and that the Reign X is even beefier, I think it should hold up fine. I think that All Mountain-ish bikes in general are really capable of doing stuff. As far as I remember the Specialized Enduro has the same requirements in terms of stability as the Demo 8 and 9. Shouldnīt be a lot different with the Reign X I hope.

I'm going to build up a Bottlerocket. 888SL is already here, as well as most of the other parts I'll build her up with.

my project will be getting a new trail bike frame and building that up, and possibly getting a hardtail and building that up as well if my parents decide to get me one for my birthday or christmas.

Taking my Demo 7 II and making it quite possibly the ugliest bike that there ever was. I mean not that it is pretty close as it is right now.
I need to know the link for those handle bars that were wood looking.
That and build up a single speed bike to ride to work!

Actually I wasn't refering to the frame's ability to take hits but with the high leverage ratio a) shock adjustment limitation b) shock wear/tear.
With a high ratio the shock moves very little for a lot of travel (relative) so tunability of the suspension may be limited. Also you have to have use a bigger spring or more air because of the larger ratio. For a spring the linear rate would be steep - air would have a steeper curve.
With a high ratio the shock also works harder.
As for pros - they get new bikes and parts at need otherwise we could all ride FRO type bikes (For Race Only) knowing that when something breaks it will be replaced. That said, I suspect that most All Mtn frames are good enough for most riders even here on the shore.

As far as the chain guide I was thinking something similar to the Blackspire one, but with a few tweaks. A cross between the E-13 and the Stinger. I have traced an E-13 so I have the dimension on paper (thanks Dave). I made the guide for my Ollie this summer and after a few initial tweaks I never dropped my chain once. All for the cost of one roller and a couple hours of my time. Thanks for all the offers for help.
The light will likely most be a 3W array (9W total) or if I can get my hands on them, a 5W array (15W total). This is mostly for fun so I am not expecting outstanding results.
These two projects should keep me busy in the garage for a while.
I seem to like looking at an existing product and making it better, customizing it to exceed typical performance with very little cost other than time.
Take the rear triangle from a Chaparral and put it on my Scream.
Chop 2 inches off the rigid fork on my Scratch to tighten up the angles.

Build my first DH bike. Looking to get a cheap ass frame and get good parts to build it up. There are some old Balfa BB7's and Giant Dh comps in my price range right now. They are all mediums and dunno if they'll be too big for me.
Anybody got any thoughts? I'm 5'9", 170lbs. Tend to like a longer cockpit.

My '07 projects are:
Building up my Fetish Cycles Obsession park bike as cheap as possible, I'm almost there; just need to build the rear wheel, buy a front wheel and steal the brakes off my wife's bike or my big bike for it.
Replacing the brakes on Julie's '06 Dawg with Juicy 5s and my Kumicho with Juicy 7s, getting a set of DH casing 2.5 Nevegals for the Kumicho and replacing it's '04 Jr T with an 888.
Building up an '07 Transition Preston from scratch for AM use: thinking a mostly XT/Easton EA70 & Havoc group with an '06 Z1 FR SL or '07 All Mountain 1 SL, Supercharger/36/24 rings with SRAM chain and cassette, 2.3 Nevegals and either Transition Revolution wheels or a custom set (whichever has a better cost/quality ratio).
Getting my wife to try some shore trails with me, and push her comfort zone a little.
Hitting doubles, seriously.
Pushing my own comfort zone and breaking out of my four foot drop rut.
Continuing to focus on tech trails and woodwork, man I love that steep and deep stuff (even when it scares me).
i'm going to make my dhr sick again. and try and find somthing that well work well the my travis single 150.

Those were a SIC product. www.sicusa.com
I've seen them up close, they actually look OK. They may not be available for retail yet, though, so you could always go for the camodized bar/stem combo.

The E13 and Stinger are really similar, there is only 3 differences (Both use a stepped roller).
1: BS uses a larger roller so it doesn't get jammed as often as the e13.
2: E13 uses an outer plate to hold the chain captive, BS uses a bevelled lip on the roller.
3: The e13 plate is a better shape, it drops down, then sweeps back giving better frame clearance than the straight back BS.
If you are making your own, I would suggets using a plate like the E13 and the roller from the BS.

.
If you can swing it, consider trying some of the new Cree leds instead of the lumileds product mentioned above. Some of the x-lamp series produce about 70 lm/W, which is about twice as good as the luxeons emitters.
I just retrofitted a palm size flashlight with a Cree emitter & optic, and it is sickly bright!
Getting my kit stacked for my new Devinci Frantik frame, and building up a Blur 4X. I can't wait!

Hopefully a new big bike like 8" for DH uses or maybe a 6-7" freeride bike... i havent decided yet. Once thats done im gonna build up an awesome street machine, Geekhouse frame, goldlabel forks, Juicy 7, Deity bars, stem, cranks (grey of course) tree bikes sprocket, havent decided wheels yet...
any ideas on a 26 or 24" wheelset for pretty heavy use (im a hack even at street) but still lightweight, also with singlespeed rear hub thats bolt on?

im building a 29er race bike for a friend of our family, its gonna be pretty sick.
for me personally i gotta get new bars and maybe a new brake setup for the 20 in t1, then im selling my turner rail frame and throwing the parts on a doc, dna, or sovereign, whatever i can find the best deal on. for the dh rig im selling my 40 and switching to a boxxer world cup. rebuiding my front wheel with a 823, sending my blown dhx spare shock to push and doing numerous other little matinence things to it, maybe a few more pieces of bling too.

Atomlab Pimp wheels all the way. My brother uses them on his Santa Cruz Jackal and so far heīs been pleased with their performance. Tough as hell (no pun intended), not über-heavy, nice-looking... Available in either 24 or 26", and of course there also is a single speed option.
@NSTP: Which frame are you getting? The silver (Frantik 3) one? Make sure to send me some pictures once you get the frame!

Yeah, i'm getting the silver frantik 3 frame, unless i can somehow get a blue frame 2 frame faster. Either colour would come with a DHX 5 though. I can't wait, it's gonna be an awesome rig.

I've got those bits from a little whiles back. Some recently. Didn't have time to put them on nor have the space for 12983109283019283 boxes lying around.
I still need my brakes, cranks, fork and apparel. :( Darn people pre-ordering all my stuff up.

This winter/spring I plan on getting a orange Cove Shocker frame to replace my 2002 SC Super 8 frame. Plan on swaping my parts with the acception of headset, BB, rear hub & seat post. 888rc intergrated stem, Mag30 front Double track rear, 2001 Hayes Mag w/ 8" rotors, Diety 2" rise bar, truvative Hussefelt cranks w/ Blackspire ns-1 guide 34 tooth, and Sram X9 mid cage w/trigger shifter.
Other project getting my 2004 Kona Cowan running again, i have only got to get a regular qr front wheel and pedals. I have it setup with a SS conversion w/16, 34 tooth, octalink XT cranks, hayes mechanical disk breaks, cable through headset, RF Diablous 50mm stem, Easton 2" rise bar, Mag30 rear rim on XT hub, a DJ seat, and 2006 dirt jam forks w/ 4".
Other project is to sit on my fat ass and play my new Xbox 360. Do some ice fishing and sledding.

yessssssssssssssss
my birthday came around, and the madre came through and ordered me one of the brand-spankin' new Yeti DJ frames for 2007. They're 5 lbs now, and they come with a real headbadge instead of that damn sticker they used to have. Too bad they only come in black. O well, I'm psyched, I'm already getting parts before my sponsorships expire and I should have this baby built before the end of January.
