Run minimal grease in it. Better yet, how about some sand, that should work right? Right?

All jokes aside. Loud hubs are straight up annoying.

For most, they either love it or hate it...

Different people ride for different reasons.

I like being invisible in the city/woods.

I'd think it'd be safer to be loud and visible in the city, on account of all the cars around.

Great thinking at work here.

When I'm driving I can barely hear the car next to me let alone a hub from a bicycle.

And grease those hubs people. They're getting louder for a reason and that reason isn't a good one.

It's gonna depend on the hub, most just will not make the noise you're after, you'll have to pony up for something like a ringle or hadley (or king, but they have more of a buzz to them, the other 2 are more machine gun like).

you should take a look at the airhorn that mec sells or at least did sell at one point. I dont have one, but the clown horn my girlfriend bought me for my city commuter has been great, I almost gave a woman a heart attack after she cut me off in those round about things on 10th.

The only time I really hear my hub is when I'm in the air, and I like the buzzzz.

how do you keep from shooting yourself in the head after about 1 block of riding a bike that sounds like a machinegun?

Mine is dead silent. My Fox 36s springs rattling is the only noise it makes. I miss riding on my Hadley :)

On most hubs you can't actually open the freewheel to get at the "pawl springs" you're talking about. Unless it's a $200+ hub it's not rebuildable.

On my old Hadley, the spring wore out and I stretched it then heated it quickly/then immersed it in cold water to make it more stiff. It really made the hub loud, but then again I was waiting for a rebuild kit at the time. The new kit made the hub even louder.

If you are really wanting hub noise, buy a 200+ hub. guaranteed noise. No way in hell you will get a 50 bux hub to sound like that w/o something terrible going on.

Nothing's impossible when one wants to make their hub "louder" so they'll be heard by other commuters...

Get a bell, or an air horn.
