The guys at Obsession: Bikes are so stoked about the positive responses to our name change and some of the other suggestions for a name that we think we should do the right thing and give you what you have really asked for.
Introducing; "Ask Crazy Lou"
You can post questions here to " Crazy Lou " and once a week he will select 3 or so of his favorites and answer them .
He likes the technical questions so let him have it !
We have an Obsession this week about DVD's:
Generate some motivation to ride by watching one of these great flicks. We have in stock now: Stripped, NWD7 Flying high again, NSX lX Trail Tales and Lies, Kranked 6 Progression, The Collective , Roam, and CKD.
While you are picking out a vid check out the 2007 XTR kit which is on display at the front counter. Grant (Velvet ) Laird did a bang up job displaying the crown jewels of Mtn Bike gear - come by and Drool .
So let Lou have it, come by for some movie motivation and get pumped on the new hot gear , see you soon !

Crazy Lou,
why do you have to send my fork to Norco just because the bushings have play?
and more importantly:
am i going to have to do this every few months?
CrazyLou
11-21-2006, 02:10 PM
Ya see, if there was NO BUSHING play, I'm talking you cant even feel this kinda bushing play that I'm talking about...then the fork would not move up and down at all.....
Your bike had a loose headset, Avid brake pad movement on the rotor when the brake lever was held (NORMAL) and some bushing play.
I'm not happy with the amount of bushing play for this new of a fork, I cannot replace RockShox bushing AND size them (change the inner diameter).
So I am sending your fork to NORCO.....
It should not be needed again. You should replace your fork before this happens again....
CrazyLou
11-21-2006, 02:22 PM
What kinda shorts are you riding?
Oh there is so much we could talk about.........
And so much that would get me kicked off of NSMB.......
I would say that the more expensive (you get what you pay for) of the Pearl Izumi shorts - the Microsensor 3D Lycra short is probably the best, I have a pair or two of the mens version, they hurt when you buy then, the bank account gets a little lighter, but they last and last, as long as you treat them right. No DRYER!!!!!
I can also get some products like: Chamois Butt'r or BodyGlide. I have never tried these....

Can the bearings in my Shimano DX clipless pedals (M647) be easily cleaned and regreased? How?
CrazyLou
11-26-2006, 12:46 PM
YES they can.
Normal maintenance for these pedals is to CLEAN and OIL the axle from the outside where it meets the resin cage. At the pedals threads there are 2 holes (ports) where the pedal axle meets the resin cage, a little Tri-Flo there keeps the mechanism running smoothly.
At the other end, inside the cage there is an access hole on the plastic cover for the cage spring. Again a little tri flow there is a GOOD thing.
As for servicing the bearings, you need to remove the axle from the pedal.
Older pedals - M636, M646 needed a special tool - Shimano Tool TL-PD40 -
Newer M647 pedals need a deep 20mm socket.
Where the axle of the M647 pedal meets the resin cage, there is a Tighten direction, different on left versus right pedal. Using a 20mm socket, remove the pedal axle by turning opposite the tighten direction. There is a little over 1cm of thread, so dont be worried if it takes a while. You may need a vice and soft-jaws to hold the pedal from spinning....
With the axle out, you can see the TWO ROWS of bearings.
Unless you need to adjust bearing play, all you need to do is clean the bearings, clean the inside of the pedal, squirt some grease into the pedal body, about 1cc of grease (about as big as the tip of your pinky) and reassemble the pedal. Excess grease will be forced out of the pedal body.
Tighten the axle to 12Nm. or DAMN TIGHT.
If the pedal bearings have play, you need to check for busted balls (bearings) or worn cups and cones....
At that point bring the pedals to a shop, I'm thinking obsession:bikes.....

Always add a King headset all bikes need one
CrazyLou
12-03-2006, 01:56 PM
I don't know if ALL bikes NEED a King headset.......
and an improperly installed King headset, is no better than a regular headset.
Some issues with King include the fact that is has no split-wedge to compensate for steer tube irregularities and this can lead to headset play which will lead to wear on the upper crown race of the headset. This part is replaceable ($40 retail).
Running the King headset loose, will also do this damage.
I LOVE this headset, dont get me wrong!!!!!
The bearings are surgical stainless, the tolerances are as near perfect as you can get (no such thing as perfect), The colours and finish are the best!

I'm not any kind of Lou, but I'd say no. Automatic warranty denial for starters, and the susupension isn't really tuned to balance that much front end travel. The secret to a sweet setup is to have the front and back of the bike in harmonious agreement. The sweetest Enduro setups I've tried all had Fox 36's on them.
If you gotta have the DC, what about an SX? Arent they a bit beefier up front?

Didn't crazy dale have a dorado on his enduro SX? Eh?
CrazyLou
12-13-2006, 09:34 PM
A dual crown on an Enduro......
Depends on how big I guess....
The new STICKERS on the 2006 SX Trail frames say: Warranty not void for any SINGLE or DUAL crown fork that does not exceed 170mm of travel.
And the Enduro front end, as far as I can tell, or any answer I've gotten from California is the exact same forged head tube, formed top tube and hydroformed down tube as the SX Trail.
Putting an 8 inch (203mm) fork on the front end will kinda upset the geometry, way to much trail, causing the front end to drop when turning the handlebar. Too relaxed of a headtube geometry as well.
I have an Manitou Sherman Slider+ 170mm fork on my bike and I LOVE IT!!!! Recently Tyler Morland dropped of a RockShox DOMAIN 318 180mm fork for us to evaluate. Its on my Enduro right now. I've ridden it twice now. And while the fork does not feel exactly the same as the Manitou, it is not coming off my bike for a while!!!! Ride height remains the same, small bump performance will get better as it breaks in and I have yet to bottom it out.
All in all, Specialized doesnt mind a dual crown fork on this bike (170mm and under), it matches well with 150mm (2004-2006 ENDURO) or 170mm (ENDURO SX TRAIL), so go for it!
And all the 2007 ENDURO SL's will come with 150mm Dual Crown forks.......

i dont think that would work to well as it is super thick. id think that you would want somthing like tri flow and just keep it lubed up as it would give less resistance? but i know nothing so wait for lou's answer
Obsession: Bikes
01-14-2007, 12:23 PM
What kind of hub?
Exposed pawls are usually found on Formula, Campy, Saint, DT Onyx, Ringle, Mavic and others....
Using too thick of a grease will not allow the pawls to retract and engage consistently. I like using grease. What I usually do is mix up a little grease and Tri-Flow into a slurry. If the customer wants the pawls to be a little louder, I will either use more Tri-Flow to make the slurry thinner, or use a thick chain lube, Phil's or even Finish Line Wet.
Straw
01-14-2007, 01:33 PM
It's a DT Onyx.
Loudness isn't a priority for me...the thick lube seems to be working OK, and is actually very quiet.
Thanks! I've never thought of mixing grease and lube! If the grease becomes a problem, I'll clean it out and use a thinner solution.
Also...I'm having trouble seating my non-drive bearing on the Onyx. Is it permisible to put a light layer of grease on the inside of the hub shell and the outside of the bearing, to lube up the process?
I always put a thin film of grease on every surface whenever I press in a bearing, headset cups, crown race, etc....
The only exception is when the manufacturer recommends loctite or other bonding agent....
CrazyLou
01-14-2007, 02:27 PM
I always grease the contact area whenever pressing in a bearing, or headset cups, or crown races, .....
Unless the manufacturer recommends loctite or other bonding agent.....
The bearings in a DT hub usually go in pretty good. What are you using to drift it in?

Here is a more techy question....
I have a 2004 Norco Shore... complete with upside down Norco decal under the clear coat.
I am guessing because of the linkage, they run the cables through housing all the way from the shifter to the derailer. I try and not ride when it is wet... but that is pretty hard out here.
What can I put in the cable housing so that the lines don't get all gummed up with crap... or not shift properly because they are binding on the housing?
I have used road lube as it is quite liquidly and it flows better...but one rain... and it is done.
Any suggestions?

Lou, in your opinion, for a Shore/Whistler bike that is able to pedalled up by a 135 pound kid, would a 1.5" fork be worth the hassle of trying to find a 30mm. 1.5" oversized stem?
CrazyLou

Let's address the stem first......
With a 1.5 Steer tube and 31.8mm bar, the MINIMUM stem length that I have ever seen is 35mm.

now that's a very good question! i'm sure there is more that just us two wondering if James at OGC will be able to work some magic on the RC2 compression damping.
i'm running mine with an xtra-firm spring and full high-speed compression damping and i find the fork still blows thru the travel very easily.

OGC is doing a SPECTACULAR JOB with Fox!!!!
And as we grow as riders, and become more aware of the limitations of our equipment, we want more!!!!
Sometimes more is NOT AVAILABLE!!!!
Suspension tuning is finicky, its a matter of interpretaion. We want more progressivity in the spring rates, but how do you define that. The progressivity gets ramped up, but its not enough, or its too much.
It is a matter of trial and error.
Sometimes the service is done PERFECT. Most of the times its either a little too much, or not quite enough. And you have to pay each time! THAT SUCKS!!!
But thats the price....
Just my rant, dont want to offend, but thats the way it is.....
CrazyLou

The Z1 Light without ETA is an Original Equipment fork from 2006.
I'm not sure which companies spec'd it but here's the poop:
Air in the RIGHT (Rider's Right as your sitting on the bike), Coil spring in the Left Leg.
It should have an air cap on both legs.
The right side is YOUR POSITIVE SPRING. It will enhance the spring on the the left side.
The Left side is is for Spring PreLoad and bottom out.
For a 200lb rider, I would set it up as follows:
RIGHT LEG: 50 psi
LEFT LEG: 10 psi
Adjust the right side leg to compensate for sag, WITHOUT GOING OVER 65 psi. Then you need a firmer spring in the left leg.
Adjust the left leg for Bottom out control. If you are bottoming the fork crank it to 15psi. If your still bottoming the fork, then you definetly need a firmer spring!
Hope that helps!

AVID:
I like Avid brakes.... If I wasnt a HOPE guy, I would definetly be running Avids!!!
I recently set up Eric Anderson, downhill racer extrordinaire, with Juicy 7 Levers and Code Calipers. 8 inch rotors on a FOES DHS 2:1.
I find the power from Juicy 7's to be HUGE and quite modulate - able.
Some disagree and feel the brakes are too ON-OFF.
According to SRam, power from their brakes goes up as the models. So a Juicy 5 is more powerful than a Juicy 3. A Juicy7 is more powerful, and the Code is their most powerful brake.
The Juicy Ultimate falls in between the Juicy 7 and Juicy 5, but its built to be their LIGHTEST brakeset (XC light).
So the answer to your question is NOBODY really needs a more powerful brake than the Juicy 5, But then again NOBODY REALLY NEEDS a LAMBORGHINI.
Pedal what you got! Buy what you can!
and ALWAYS RIDE IT LIKE ITS STOLEN!!!!!!

Well since you asked...
I've got a new 07' Boxxer WC. I have it setup mostly the way I like it, but I'm unsure about the gate setting. Is the gate just high speed compression? Is gate on = high speed compression damping on?
Right now the thing feels amazing for trail riding. I haven't taken it off anything large yet, and I worried about how it will react to large hits. I would like it to ramp up near the end of the travel. Any tips or advice?
Thanks Mr. Lou.

Hopefully Lou won't mind me butting in here.
I would check your pads Derwood. Unlike some other brakes - which can run quite well right down to the metal - Magura Louises (pre 2007 at least) don't retract well once the pads get worn. They may look okay but still need replacing in my experience. Amazing brakes in terms of modulation, adjustment and power but you need to keep an eye on pad wear.

Hey Stringer, about the TOTEM 2-Step.....
I would hold off a bit.....
Every 2-Step we have seen, about 5 or 6 of 'em, have reduced the amount of travel, as in the 2-Step travel adjustment is not working properly. These forks have all been replaced by SRAM (NORCO) but it happened in the replacement forks as well. SRAM (ROCKSHOX) is working on this problem, and they will have a permanent solution soon, just waiting for parts. But for now, I prefer the TOTEM SOLO AIR.

For the Totem Solo Air, it is possible to lower it to 135mm, 150mm, etc. etc. of travel if need be (internally) through the provided spacers for the cartridge?

Hey timehoc1,
I would love to give you an answer to your question, but, I have never been in a NORCO shop.
I have repaired many Norco's, but never sold them, nor really explored what their limits are....
I do know that the manufacturer's spec their bikes the way they do for a reason, and putting a longer stroke shock may not be recommended!!!!
As for the performance you WANT....
a different rear shock WILL make a difference. Manufacturers spec their bikes for: PRICE POINTS and performance.
I need to know what you feel is wrong with the bike, ie. what do you want improved.....THEN we can talk about components.....
Is it pedalling? or Big Hits? or high speed chunder hits?
Let me know...

I have a Hope Mini (not a mono, just a Mini) on the rear of a bike. It seems to work ok. However, I just went to replace the pads and one of the pistons (the outside one, if it makes any difference) won't go back.
I then checked the normal braking functioning and, of course, that piston is lazy... very lazy.
So basically I have a sticky piston. What is the correct approach to freeing it up? I tried pouring beer on it but, surprisingly, that didn't help.
Thanks.

rebuild the caliper.
1. get new seals for the pistons
2. pull the pistons all the way out of the caliper, soak em in brake cleaner and then use a soft rag to wipe them off
3. clean off the caliper too
4. put the new seals back in and gently push the pistons back in
5. bleed the brake
6. you're good to go.

You were right about the crappy rims on my Demo. Ill need a new rear one next time I come in, according to what was said when I left last time. What rim would you suggest? And what would it cost to build my current hub, cogs etc to that rim?
CrazyLou

J-Kwon,
As long as they are the proper diameter, ie. 203mm or 185mm, or 160mm.
There is NO PROBLEM. Might make a weird noise or SQUEEL, but you will have braking power.....

gnof,
Lever blade?
or complete lever assembly?
An Avid lever retails for $25, labour is about 5 to 10 dollars.
An Avid Juicy 5 (MY07) Lever Body assembly retails for about $80, install will be about $20.
Let me know.....

bryce,
Its not that they are crappy rims.
Its that the bike ROCKS!!!!!
Almost any rim you put on this bike, or any fully active dual-suspension bike, with more than 5 inches of travel, you will dent.....
The more travel you get on a bike, the lazier you get when you ride. By this I mean that you stop picking the smoothest line around or over obstacle and instead look for the fast line thru these obstacles....
Rocks are harder than rims....
For your next rims....I suggest Mavic EX 721 rims.....

607 bearings.....
These are NOT AVAILABLE.....
Typically a SkateBoard Bearing, ask for an ABEC-5.
But tell them the bearing measurements. Try RDS - Red Dragon, just up the street. (604) 990-4737.
I can order them for ya, but they might have them in stock.....

Those guys arent so crazy.....They're wearing gloves!!!!!
Maybe that makes them crazier????
The SX Trail uses a 10mm rear axle.......
to change that to a 12mm would weaken the chainstay. I dont recommend it!!! But maybe Specialized is working on a 12mm rear end....
But Hope makes a GREAT 12mm 135mm rear hub....
And I hear King is working on one...

If its an '05 or '06, probably NOT A GOOD DEAL......
If its an '07 or '08, and it includes a rear shock, then $500 is a good deal depending on the FIRE DAMAGE......

This is the reason the bike industry doesn't work. Not picking on anybody in particular, but in the moto industry, as soon as it leaves the shop. NO WARRANTY.
Two witnesses or five. The piece of billet aluminum that the hangar was machined from 99.99999% did not have a flaw in it, thus it should not be warranty.
CrazyLou
11-25-2007, 09:38 PM
Ya , Pete. I see your point...
BUT
In the interest of customer service, which IS OUR BUSINESS. I don't mind replacing a chunk of formed aluminum (NOT CNC) if it means keeping the customer happy!
I can deal with the manufacturer, and distributor, cause that's what we do.
Yep, I see both sides and agree with you. Customer is always right.
PS: I thought it was a North Shore Billet Hangar.

Well, the shock's pretty curved, but it's fitting the frame perfectly. Ha! Should've grabbed a picture of it, completely toasted!
Anyway, I've got a good one for you...
Is it possible to fit the DHX from an '07 Sx trail to a 2006 140mm travel enduro? I know it's possible to up the travel to 150mm with a shock change, but would this be taking things too far?
CrazyLou
12-09-2007, 05:48 PM
SHORT ANSWER is NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But the long answer is KINDA......
You cant put a 9" eye-to-eye 2.75" stroke shock in the bike. It will actually bind the shock shaft eventually...
There is an aftermarket 8.75" x 2.75" stroke shock DHX 5.0 Coil that will work(167mm). Or you can use the aftermarket 8.75" x 2.50" stroke shock DHX 5.0 Air, that its supposed to have (150mm travel).

Lou. The Eskars are awesome. But they require sealant. Otherwise by the time you get home you're running 8 psi and it's a bit squirrely.
Also discovered that the tool for removing and replacing outboard bearing bb bearings doesn't work on Hone bb's. You can't set the bearing in deeply enough due to the configuration of the cup. You could prolly jig something like use the old bearing as an additional press spacer but I had a set of XTR cups getting dusty so there you go.
Speaking of which do you have ceramic replacement bearings and if so emma chisit?
