It's tough to say good-bye to dry trails - but I love riding in the wet.

So does Mark Steinebach. Nice work Mark!

Excellent article, I realy enjoyed it, Kinda hits home. I ride year round even as cold as -30 when cables have to be deiced for my brakes to work. Thanks Cam for providing such a great site to host articles such as this and Mark thanks for the article.

Rock on mate. Our sport is pure. Without dependence on whether the waves are big, whether theres snow, whether theres concrete. We can ride whereever and when ever and we should as it makes us a better rider and person because of it. Get out of your heated homes and enjoy nature!

its starting to get pretty wet here in wales and its sometimes difficult to get motivated and get out but you've helped change my viewpoint.
cheers

My favorite time to ride is in the shoulder seasons because there are half the riders on the trail. The forests come alive in the wet season. Nothing like seeing the mist rise as you ride through the forest.

And so what, you get a bit wet... prepare yourself.

I moved here to so this and while I do go on a bit of a hiatus in December and January... once Feb hits... I am out there!

Riding 7th... or skating 7th gets very interesting!

Ride on!

Dan

As I've been telling everyone; I'm not too fed up that I missed the entire summer because of injury. Summer is stinking hot, sweaty and dusty. Autumn when the rain starts is absolutely the best season, it's a comfortable temperature, the trails get interesting, and there are less people. Wait a little longer and we're into snow season, and who doesn't enjoy a good rip in the snow? It's brilliant.
The one thing I have found to be true, is the worse the weather and riding conditions, the more memorable the ride tends to be. I did a woodlot ride in the torrential rain last Sunday, and it was absolutely incredible!

Great story :)

you dont need to tell the riders who rip on sunday mornings. Our group ride doesnt even happen during the summer. Winter is shuttle season, not whistler season.

My thoughts exactly.... I though I was the only crazy... Just last weekend I dropped in @ 8800 feet in a white-out. So unique of a ride it was one of the best of the year.

Keep on Given'r rippers!

Well done Mark. This is the kind of inspiration us lazy bikers need. I also enjoy the serenity of the wet winter. The downside is that I live in a downtown studio, and have nowhere to clean my bike or myself. I am figuring it out. I'll see you at Vedder!!!!!!!!!

So I'm sitting here looking at my bike, reading this article, and peering out the window at the rain that is getting heavier every hour. I think it's time to hit the mountain....

Thanks for the inspiration!

The downside is that I live in a downtown studio, and have nowhere to clean my bike or myself.

FYI most gas stations (excluding those in Vancouver proper) have hoses you can clean your bike off with on the way home. It's a good option for the hose-less riders out there.

Now... cleaning yourself off with the hose is entirely up to you.

Biggest drought ever here in Aus, 1 season, riding season! I'd like to feel some pity for you but truth is I'd rather ride North Shore mud than You Yangs dry any old day. Love your mud, I dream about it.

as I'm sure you know, it works quite well. You can only be 100% wet right? ;)
great article.

We got to enjoy them both wet and dry. Black Mamba was new to me so I will be looking forward to riding that one in the dry....

I do not really understand what kind of people sell their bikes after the summer "season" - to stop riding :???: call me "strange", but i love my bike and i would never sell it. :couple: this is weird. how come there are people who sell their stuff when it becomes "ugly" (in their opinion)....riding in wet weather remdinds us of how to ride properly.

well written...:D

After the rain in late november, i think I'm going to officially recant my position on riding in the rain......
