View Full Version : Nanaimo Riding?

Well after four hellish years of no downhilling in Ontario I find myself back on the Isle ready to ride. I spent four years riding in the Comox Valley and had hoped that Nanaimo's trails would be as developed, but I can't seem to find anything in good condition here.
Can anyone shed some light on this. Why is Nanaimo's MTB scene so small when we have epic hills to build on?

I am moving to Nanaimo anyday now and I too am wondering that same question. I went for a ride to Doumont the other day and a lot of promise. I will send you a PM when I move.

It would be awesome to get a crew out building here.

there has been a ton of work on doumont this year, it's getting pretty rad. we kinda hit a low when malaspina ripped apart all of our stunts and trails on doumont because they were worried about liability. then the logging killed everything on benson, but this summer there has been alot of work done. and a friend of mine is building a new trail on benson but it's definitly expert only.

nanaimo is dead compared to like 3-4 years ago, its pretty sad. once the street scene came out that was the first blow, and the logging on benny and the stunt choppage and shit spreading on doumont didnt help things either

it's kind of sad. i started riding in namaimo, early freeride, techy xc. i plan on moving back in the near future, so it looks like it'll be a good time to start building more trails!

I'm hoping to start cutting new lines on Benson in the near future. I want to do it in the "protected" area that the Nanaimo Area Land Trust (NALT) is trying to purchase. Approximately 500-600 acres of Benson will be saved with any luck. I notice that almost all of the stunts on Benson are gone or in really bad repair. I'll have to head over to Doumont and check it out. The last time I rode there it was too X-country for us.
What trails are worth checking out at Doumont? I'm especially looking for steeps, drops and jumps. Good log rides or other stunts certainly can be fun too.

Neils got some siick jumps, he likes if you kinda ask permission to ride them first even thow their on public land, if you do ride then, just respect them fix you case marks and any other damage that might accidently occur, and dont film them. o and im talkin about neil meier

One note - before you go cutting new trails in the future protected area. Talk to the people involved first. Here in Cumberland, Dan from Dodge City and Jeremy from the Riding Fool have a great working relationship with the Forest Society, and we have almost unlimited building potential

www.cvmtb.com - I'm hoping to also get some mapping of what there is in the nanaimo area in time.

The trails are there you just have to know where they are. They did log it out but most of the good trails didnt change and are still there. You have to go up high to Hitman then whats left of starfish and down to binx. Thats the best line up benny now.. Other then the new trail yet to be named. Long way from done but hey its trail time again.. If ya want I can take ya up. As for new lines in the safe are. i dont think they are worth it as you would have to go way to high and are 2 far out of the way to make work..

Absolutely! I know someone who is involved with the NALT purchase and I certainly wouldn't want all my hard work torn down cause I didn't clear it first. I think communities like Cumberland are great examples of the public support for trails even from people who never ride a bike.

It is quite a hike to get up to the higher areas. I'm so used to Forbidden where it's easy shuttle time. I don't mind a good hour of climbing so I'll try to keep any trail building in that limit. Definatley will be looking for a shuttle access area to build.
Bottom line is I guess I'll have to do some more exploring. I was just getting discouraged seeing the condition of the trails on Benson. Looks like a few of us are coming out of the woodwork though.

Hey,
I haven't ridden Nanaimo before but I remember hearing about a bunch of cool stuff a couple years ago. Is Whiskey Shooter still there? Binx's trail? What all is left that has stunts and steeps on it? That's sad about the logging, seems like Nanaimo used to be a hot spot for riding.
