I have a feeling that the next trail day won't be till the fall.

ya this is kevin dahl, who r u...and thanks, ill check the site for the dates
For one i haven't tried it out yet and it's not supposed to be a full on wall, I wanted to have it straighten out and roll down so it can line people up for the hip.
I've ridden the new berm a few times, and it's great. I love what you guys have done with the roll in area off the log too. It needed a bit of a cleaning after that tree fell a few years ago and blocked the path.

tommorow as in tuesday? I'll hit it up for a quick afternoon rip.
I'd love to spend some time shoveling some dirt onto that first jump's tranny though, the lip's lots of fun but the landing sketches me out so i dont go as big as i think you could get on that thing. that and the lip needs some rework, but thats a given with everyone riding it.

What do you ride?
I was planning on hitting the shed tomorrow, if I see you I'll say hello.

Nice, I can't wait to give it a go too. Hopefully tommorrow after work. Ideally the plan with that bank is to have you come up from the end of the Goats Log ride, over the little bridge, up the trail, around the trees and hit the wall before the hip. What is needed then is a little dirt berm/bank when you come around the tree before the wall, if this makes any sense?
I'll be in the shed for a rip tommorrow (tues) at around 4ish around the jumps. I'll be on a painted VPS 6

he i'm noticing more and big lose rocks along the trails, im sure this is to do with lack of rain and the amount of riders, but a couple creeks in the shed still have water moving in them, would be alright if i went in and filled in the pot holes just little maintence, im thinking mainly at the end of the goat jumps.
-S
Sure if you want to do alittle work it shouldn't be a problem. If you're gonna go in there, try and bring in a couple of large water bottles (maybe some 4L milk jugs or cranberry jugs) so you can pack the new dirt down. Cause really, if there is no moisture it'll just be a waste of your time.
And sorry but i know i probably shouldn't have to mention this but please don't dig a crater beside the trail to get the dirt. It's been known to happen.

I've been to a few of your trail days before, i know, where the gold holes are, but i was looking closer most of the dirts still on the trail its just been redistrobuted by people skiddding around. So it should be easy to fix the holes just someone needs to take the time.

ps inform me of the next trailday, theres somethng id like to discuss with you.
no prob, but i'm not sure when the next trail day will be. For myself, i am on afternoons this week so i am going to try and get in there and do a bit of touching up, and riding of course.

Thanks

no matter where you build you cant leave your shovels and shit out in the open... people jack that stuff without a second thought. at my local jumps, every single one of our tools got busted or jacked overnight. and we thought they were hidden!

anyone riding tomorrow??
Wish I could. Have a great ride if you do. Hopefully you get a dusting of rain tonight to keep the dust from the trails down
Hello gentlemen.
I rode the shed last night, and it was great. Still a bit loose, but the dusting of rain really helped. Goat #1 seems to have gone through it's 10th revision, while someone really messed with the gravity bowl. The root drop is now a simple ride in.
:(
I'll be out again Friday night (hopefully) and take some pics. Our hidden gem is looking pretty good.

riding the big jump today, i noticed people keep digging it out to make it better. stop that. that makes a shitty jump. none the less you built up the top to a fucking nipple lip. stop that as well. i took the time to widden it and try and straighten the top out, but furthermore, by digging out so much it makes it very steep and harsh-y. at least on a small bike. i tried to make the begining a little mellower so it would flow, but it needs summore dirt. Make that jump fantastic instead of hack jobbing it into a shitty lip...
just my 2-cents. and there needs to be a sign that says not to roll it, cause i HATE people who roll nice lips... i think you all do, too.
Dude, you need to read over what you said at the beginning of your post: "i noticed people keep digging it out to make it better. stop that. that makes a shitty jump."
It's funny because the reality is that people are going to be constantly going in there and modifying it to their likes. Since the lip is still fairly new, it has to be over built and steeper than some people may not like and it has to be built up, because as people roll it'll wear down to where it should be.
The HUGE problem i have is that people are getting lazy and throwing mulch from the cedar stump which is the worst thing you can do.
Other than that, just remember that each time you head in there things are going to change so always remember that. Don't just hit up the jump without taking a peak at it. So far everytime i have been in there the jump is still alot of fun no matter how the lip is shaped
If someone is rolling the lip or riding jumps backwards or running up it, don't freak on them, if you decide to say anything, be polite. I heard that one rider threw a rock at someone for doing one of those things, there is no need
I hit the shed up last night, and man was it wet and muddy. No worries though, I broke in my new stinky.
:D
Tons of bike racks on the cars in the parking lot. The shed is getting popular again.

I'll let you know next time I ride there. BTW what is the name (if it has one) of the log ride with the ramp on the unsecured end. It is a very cool thin and unlike anything else I've seen before. Lat time there I rode it without knowing what it was.
Jigsaw
01-05-2007, 07:58 PM
Yeah the ride was good. I saw two kids riding the jumps but those were the only riders. Not many walkers either.
I'm not sure which trail "got skills" is.
Is it the one with the drop to tight left corner? If so, yes the work is great;)
What's the plan there? I always liked that drop and then gaps afterwards. (And thanks for taking time to work on it)
ERregular: I've always thought of that as part of stairway, which is the section before it.
Jigsaw
01-06-2007, 05:35 PM
Oh, okay I always call that the gulley. I was thinking of something else.
I actually didn't go over to "got skills", I'll have to check it out again.
Tom P
01-06-2007, 07:32 PM
Basically, the area is the series of gaps and jumps that starts with the small 3' or so drop, to a series of wall rides, a spine, burms, and a massive jump close to the bottom. :)
So I take it the whole Mtber & Delta parks agreement of only building on the designated trails is no longer being respected?
I guess summer 2007 will see "Chainsaw Massacre Part III"
So the trail you guys are talking about is not 'Got Skillz' but the Drop trail where the infamous Super Pier used to be.
Got Skillz doesn't really exist, it more of a myth/legend of the shed
As for the Drop trail, that was one of the trails on our list of proposed trails to the city. The thing is the chances of the city allowing us to build on the trail legally would be next to impossible because of erosion, possibility of someone getting hurt and other reasons, which is crap because we all think that with some work that trail would be in better shape with a little TLC and drainage work.
Having said that, if someone(s) was to put in a bit of time and cleaned it up a bit and did some low impact drainage and built a line in there purely natural with no structures, just using the natural terrain making everything look so natural to the point where you couldn't really tell stuff was built that would probably be OK, but just warning you guys now that for the sake of everyone that rides in the shed that the city doesn't speak up and say something to the SBC, because we do have an agreement with them that everything has to go through them.
I know personally that for myself, I have had some of my older stuff torn down during the previous chainsaw massacres and I would rather go through the avenues we are going through now rather than building what ever we want, having the city tear everything down, rebuild and so on IMO
If the city does decide that the Drop Trail must come down, it will come down to us (the shed bike club) to have to tear it down, and the last thing we want to have to do is tear stuff down that people have put a lot of work into, again because we know what it's like to have stuff torn down. But also, we would rather spend out time either riding of building legal stuff for everyone to ride.
So please think about this before you decide to build stuff in the shed. At the very least, if you have an idea, or want to do some work or maintaining please email Brett at shedbikeclub@hotmail.com or give me a shout and try and get a hold of Brett.
The city has been fairly good with everything so far and the plan is/was to propose another route to build this year, I just hope that that can still happen.

It is definitely more XC than FR, but there are some jumps, skinnys, teeters, etc.
Here is the "official" trail map.

PM me if you have a trailday, I 'll post on the South Surrey (SORCE) board and see if I can't get some people out.
I finally got out for a rip in the shed the other day.
I was really suprised how well the trail is holding up and the big Goats jump is in great shape whoever has been giving it some loving. The carpet is a nice touch too.
What suprised me more (but shouldn't have) were all of the downed trees. There is a lot of material in there now and alot of root holes for dirt.
Also, Got Skillz is basically done, there is now a 8ft deep trench along the top of section.
Other than that can't wait to get out and ride again!
The amount of work a number of people did over the winter to clean up the shed was amazing. You think there is a lot of treefall now, you should have seen it in January.
:D
I agree on the Goat's. The first jump feels nice. As for the rest of the shed, well done builders.
Yeah, I visited my folks Sunday so I stopped in there for a ride for the first time in over a year and was pleasantly surprised. Nice work guys!

so out of curiosity, who does maintain the trails these days? had a fun rip today and gotta say, "got skills" is a broken neck waiting to happen, but whatever, i guess the ol' drop trail always has been. And checked out the older jump drop trail, the one with the drop to berm over roots and a log? washed the fuk out, eroded to shit. incredible wat a couple underground rivers'll do eh! Anyways, i find myself wanting to enjoy my shed rides, as they are more frequent, and wonder if anything's gonna get pulled together work wise. it would really be nice to see the jumps get some love.

The truth is that there are a lot of individual riders who truly love the shed, and these are the guys who are doing the maintenance nowadays. From the hardtail kids reworking the goat's to regular people cleaning up treefall, it's the most organized disorganization I've ever seen.
I'm glad the SBC did all of that work years ago. They made it happen. But nowadays it's the individuals who are keeping things running, not the SBC.
I'm glad we've found this happy medium because the shed is still one of the best freeride areas in the lower mainland.
:)
Agreed! Thats great how people randomly pitch in. Magic actually!

^which trail is Goats? I rode a trail with a big table in it, which leads to a couple more small jumps then after there's a few skinnies which leads to a drop. Then there's another uphill skinny which leads to another drop. Another trail is the one with the two teeters on the skinny. Anyone know the names of these trails? Got Skills is a neat trail too =p

That looks like what was the drop trail which also used to house the super pier. Try to avoid riding that trail in the rain (or at all) as its actually a stream bed and fisheries and oceans / delta parks can get po'd.
Got skills is around the plateau / clearing. If you find it, inspect it first and read the lines well. Over shooting a few of them can be quite hazardous.
Tom P

That trail was one of the two that Delta Parks had a real problems with. They have wanted that trail shut down since '95. Building stuff in that creek gully will only cause problems with Delta, and will make them less likely to OK another "official" trail in the shed.

Thanks for your insight on this matter flow..... it's easy to sit there and post your opinions on the matter. But if you had any clue how damaged the shed was this past winter, and how much time individuals put in to fix the damage, you'd know that I don't put much emphasis on what you have to say. When you're in the trenches you get a good view of the battle.
cheers.
wow....... Im pretty speechless. How long have you been riding the shed? a couple years?
Just to let you know where I am coming from......
I started riding the shed and working on the trails there in '89. When the dog walkers wanted to give the mountain bikers the boot in '95, I was part of the committee that Delta Parks put together to resolve that conflict and come up with a management plan for the park. In the late 90's stunts started being built in the shed, most of them of horrendous quality. A local paper featured the "drop trail" with a photoshoot of a rider hitting the drops. This coverage in the local paper resulted in Delta coming in to the shed and knocking down most of the stunts.
After a few years of rebuilding a bunch of mostly crappy stunts (alder etc) and building those big tables by the scout camp, Delta came in again and leveled everything. This led to the formation of the SBC and getting approval to build a trail using quality construction (goats). I spent a fair bit of time in the Shed with Al that year working on the new official line.
So if you want to jeapordize what you have in the shed then go ahead and post pictures of a trail that Delta and DFO do not want there. I was simply trying to share a bit of insight into the history of the shed. Its funny how people make the same mistakes over and over again ain't it?
Rida of RM7

lol...i love how all these people ride the shed for a year or two then think they own the place and can decide what is right and wrong
Im not saying I know everything but I know that we have a good thing going with our trail and we need to be smart if we want our next one

So you can post your opinions from 400 or so km away, while there are individuals in the shed as I type, cleaning, clearing, maintaining. They are the ones who make it possible for jackasses like this Rida kid above to have his little place to ride.
Dude.... I will give you +REP till the end of time for "cleaning, clearing, maintaining" the Shed. You have completely missed the point of my comment. The issue at hand is that the 'drop trail' goes down a gully like draw comprised of sediment laden tills. When it rains, there is small stream that flows down the middle of the draw directly into a ditch which flows under the road and into fish habitat. This stream gets pretty muddy when people are riding in there when the ground is wet.
Can you, as a trail builder, honestly tell me it's a good idea to build a trail that impacts the environment whenever someone rides it during or after rains?
The 'drop trail' and the area around the old 'Bowel Movements' trail are highly sensitive to erosion. This was a key topic covered in the report done by environmental consultants in the '90s. All Delta did was ask that we not build in these 2 areas. Are bikers such a greedy bunch we can't respect this request and stay out of 2 small areas of the park?
Tom P
06-14-2007, 07:06 PM
Well I'll go check it out the next time I'm at my folks place.
While I admit that the area is sensitive, it's the least of my worries.
Have you seen the oil that flows off the train tracks and ends up in that very same stream?
Do you always rationalize what you do by pointing out that someone else is making a bigger mess? I only litter a little, some people dump all their garbage in the woods....
Wow Hypa....The whole issue with building in the shed has nothing to do with us bikers, it has to do with the North Delta...
While i do agree with you on the train tracks, it really means nothing for two reasons....
1) The city of ND has no jurisdiction with the tracks and neither does the City of ND have any say on the stream cause it's managed by the DFO and the City of ND will do anything they can to make them happy (more like not piss them off)
2)The old saying that 2 wrongs don't make a right...
We made a huge effort a few years ago regarding the drainage in the gully and did a pretty good job but the city didn't care so to borrow your expression, because "it was the least of our worries" the goal was to be allowed to build so we had to settle with starting with one trail at a time and that's were we are now.

You have done a great job of building those hips and berms and jumps up on the Drop Trail and yes it is called the drop trail or the gulley trail, not Got Skillz (however got skillz looked decommissioned since one the storms) I was actually thinking that the builders of Got Skillz actually built those things on the Drop Trail because the quality is top notch, however.....
....as great of shape the shed trail is in, there is still stuff that is in need of maintanance as well as multi-use trials with fallen logs across them as well as being overgrown with bushes
Having said all of this Hypa, I think we need to all be on the same page and for one, slagging Tom is not the way to go.
We have to remember that we have to do stuff within the limits of what we can get away from the city of ND. If we piss them off and they come in and tear down everything and ban bikes from the shed it will no longer be the lease of your worries and 'punks' like rida will not have a place to ride.
And don't think for a minute the city won't do it, they have torn stuff down before, stuff that me and other have spent hundreds of hours working on and it SUCKS! The great thing now is I know that what I work on or build won't get torn down, it's a great feeling (even though I can't make huge, scary stuff now) but to think if it did get torn down because of a couple of people that think because they cleared a few fallen trees and a bit of drainage that they can build some big stuff in an area that the city has repeatatly told us not to build in, that would be a bummer!
-Simon
Like i said in my first rant, it's too bad but Got Skillz is pretty much toast. There is a huge eroded trench through the first section, it's actually pretty remarkable
Yeah, the original Got Skills was destroyed by mother nature herself.
It's a piss off too, because that trail was finally taken back by the riders. For years it was nothing more than a place for kids to get drunk and stoned, and homosexuals to have sex (no BS, I have come across some wierd isht at the shed a few times)
I think at the end of the day, riders are going to go where there's dirt and a down slope, regardless of what the beaurocrats have to say about it. Hell, I've seen people riding pocket bikes in there!
Delta is going to do whatever they want based on the loudest critics, and no matter what happens, I'll still love the shed.
Thus my reason for deleting the posts. I'd rather carry on like I have been for the last decade or so, silently maintaining and riding rather than arguing the fine points of beaurocracy.
Cheers!
:)
Yeah but the thing is these beaurocrats in Delta are actually listening and have been more than accomodating. If you look at the stuff that we are legally allowed to build compared to places like Whister (around town not on the mountain) or Surrey (SSBP- no offence) we got it pretty good.
Again i think it would be a shame to ruin our relationship and jepordize biking for everyone for a couple of sweet big hits IMHO:cool:

a heads up...
before the first goat's jump there's a root/drop that everyone goes off... um, i'm not sure if it's official or not, but it's now a gap, with a big log in case you don't know it's there. i barely managed to stop in time and put a foot down, but nearly endo'd.
if it's official, someone should definitely put a sign up, because everyone who goes to drop it like normal is probably going to case on this big freaking log that someone put in.
it's fun once you know it's there, but it seems like a really awful idea to me. someone's going to get hurt, not knowing it's there.

shoddy grom building (not youngins, just groms at building)
That little drop should honestly be blocked off to avoid people from flying down the gravel path trying to get HUGE air off that old 'jump'. ALOT of people walk by there and don't need to dodge anyone

I'm still here although I haven't ridden in the shed all summer.
I haven't anything from the shed club in probably close to a year.
i love the shed. it's the first place i rode with a "bike park".
anyway i had a baby boy a year ago just as i got into riding and it's close to home so i ride there almost every weekend.
i haven't heard anything from the club for over a year as CraigH said. i was there yesterday and it needs work. the bridge/ladder at the goat jumps has rotted and broken away and unfortunately a guy didn't realize this and crashed big time on it. he was out for a ride and has ridden over it many times (no jumps) in the past. he got up to it and tried to stop but slid over and went over the handle bars. hurt his shoulder and hip badly and had to be helped out of the park. also his helmet was cracked so i was a bit worried. he said he was fine and could drive himself to the emerg if i helped him up and loaded his bike for him.
a month ago some guy also went down off the bridge and similar....over the handle bar and hurt his knee real bad. i had to push both his and my bike up the hill. he had to use the bike and me to balance and hop up to the school where his wife was waiting (annoying note, some kid was pushing his bike up to hit the jumps again and didn't even help. just walked behind us silently). what gives dood?
anyway, two teeter toters need to be rebolted back on and some of the jumps/lips need to be filled in or smoothed out. i went out at the start of spring and did what i could but man.....nobody told me trail building/repairing was hard work!!!
anyone want to organize a trail day or help me out? i only have a 2-3 hours of free time on the weekends but we could work on one section at a time.
oh another vent, dog owners need to pick up. after the rain and then some warm weather the crap started molding. it turned white so it was highly visible and the entire sides of the trails looked like it was covered in snow. it was disgusting to see so much crap. and i wish horse owners had to pick up after themselves too. man there was horse droppings all over the place. could have made a table top with all that crap around!

speaking of the goats jumps, I mega-cased that last one, too, because I was just half-assing through there and didn't realize until too late. apparently it's been a while. oh well, good incentive to give'r.
the totters should just be removed, imo, or at least majorly rebuilt, as they're pretty effed.
oh yeah, I hate kids walking up trails marked "Downhill Only", particularly those goats jumps. Nearly smoked some kids on many an occasion.
gtse, if you're serial about fixing some stuff, pm me and I'll see if I can come out on a Sunday.

hopefully you didn't get hurt. some kid at the entrance by the school said he went over the handle bars after casing it. but other than dirt on him he looked ok.
and yes i too almost smoked a father and son once. i'm newbs and have a hard time with the large table top and i came off of it a bit wobbly then rolled the second one and turned to point her at the last two and boom right there on the side at the top of the step down was father and son. slammed on the breaks and skidded off to the side of them and into the branches and stuff.

What is the shed
the Delta Watershed. basically a big "urban forest" park near the Delta/Surrey border. It's part of the water system that feeds burns bog, I guess. there used to be some quite gnarly riding in there, but a kid got hurt, and the city tore pretty much everything out many moons ago. things are a bit better now, but anyway.
used to be more gnarly? man i must be old cause it's plenty gnar gnar for me already.
although i swear i'm not sure how some of the stunts are possible. someone must be hitting them though cause i see fresh tire marks on them every week.
and rat i totally agree. that big table is hard to learn on. i cleared it 3 times outta 50-60 tries. but then i crashed hard on the step down last feb and ever since i just can't bring myself to hit that table top with speed.
funny thing, i used to clear that bridge at the end no problem. week after week i cleared it and got bigger and better every time. but yesterday i just couldn't bring myself to go for it without the "safetey" bridge there. it was messing with my mind and i just couldn't do it.

511 pages!!!!!!! The Shed rules!
The shed is still good, but it's in a bit of rough shape after the wet summer. The final goat's jump at the tree stump is down, the bridge was forcibly removed, and now it's a gap.
There also needs to be some work done to many drainage areas. Without drainage, all this stuff washes away.
Got Skills (ver.2) needs some work too. Some crash pads, and a lot of drainage and whatnot is needed.
I'm out for the next few weeks because of a bad back, but I hope to see you guys there for evening rides this winter.
Which ones exactly?
Well I was being slightly sarcastic. I can't do a lot of the stunts especially gaps so I pretend most ppl can't either to make myself feel better. so thanks for ruining it truvativ21!
Seriously though I have read about the place and it's history. I wish I saw it in it's full glory.
All the gaps amaze me. I've seen fresh tire tracks on the landings and I just can't believe some of you guys can hit those. Even the step up to the raised log and then off. That blows my mind. I thought I could do the gap to the platform at the start of the shedi but....nope just couldn't find a cup of htfu tea around.
The shedi jumps/gaps I've been playing around with lately but same thing....just can't bring myself to hit them.

hmm i could be wrong but i seem to recall someone telling me the last section of the "bike park" is called return of the shedi.
it's right after stairway to heaven (sth). wait wait wait....i hope i'm getting the names right!
sth is the one that starts with a log ride and then the double teeters then the step up to the raised log then ending on the log boner. then i think the shedi starts with the gap to platform and then onwards and ending at the bottom and out to the main gravel path.
hmm have i said too much already? this isn't a secret is it? it's all well marked with signs just no names of the trails so i'm assuming it's ok. no?
I wouldn't really consider it a secret gtse. That trail comes right off the main gravel trail, and has been approved by council.
With the demise of the SBC, it's come down to us to keep that place up and running. Doing the maintenance, rebuilding what's been broken, and most of all, keeping the hikers and horsey set happy. It's those douchebags who have the collective power to run us out of the shed, so say hello the next time you see a walker.
And if you see a dog walker letting their four legged friends shit on the path, feel free to pick up said shit and flinging it at them.
I don't think the SBC is gone. I'm actually pretty sure they will be fixing things up in a week or two :D
But yes the regular maintenance has to be done by us who ride there often. Things like cleaning out some of the garbage or filling in holes here and there. Other than that I'm all noobs to trail building/maintenance so I'm not sure what else to do half the time. Thought about pm'ing some of the building gurus here and asking for help but haven't had time yet. This is the thing I love about this sport. A shedhead report from Peru, man if you guys ever have a chance to ride down here, it is amazing, one day the trail was 35km long, DOWNHILL, talk about epic.
Hi everyone,
The Shed Bike Clubis hosting a trail day Sunday November 2nd 2008 - we will start work @ 10:00am and finish up with a BBQ in the meadow sponsored by Rocky Cycle @ 3:00pm !!
We will meet in the meadow @ 10:00am rain or shine. We will bring a good supply of tools - but feel free to bring your own shovel, 5 gal pale, pick, hatchet etc.
The lower half of the trail is in need of some TLC ( everything after the NEW Goat drop ). We will repair the teeters, clean up the step up on Stairway and rework the jumps onh Shedi. As well the connector trail between Goats and Stairway needs the drainage cleaned up before the winter rains set in.
I look forward to seeing everyone, and please feel free to pass this on to all your friends, family and riding buddies - everyone is welcome !!!
See you Sunday, Brett.

We will be working on that as well as everything after the NEW Goat's drop. Chhech , I remember your name but forget the face...........hope you can make it out on sunday.
