yeah Mike i tried the kicker on the end of Stairway, kinda bumpy for a HT, but like you said, ya need speed. It kinda suprised me when i rode up the ramp, so when i tried it i started near the top so hence the lack of speed.
Great 3hr ride today with some newbies, a little more time with em and it's off to the shore;)

Had a great ride today I rode 6 seconds for the first time and launched the drop. It's built perfectly, excellent work Al.
 Make sure you check the stunts before you ride it. Someone removed the 5th rung before the drop on Stairway I did the drop perfectly even so the rung wasn't there.
I sure hope it's isn't Erik or Craig who ripped out the rung because they've done nothing but complaining about Stairway to me so far. Quit your Bitching !!! ;)

If you're just afraid to do the drop with the lip on it, I think it should stay, you can always build up your confidence and plus you haven't been biking for a longtime. I've already hit it several times and I love it cause you acctually have to go fast up the ramp. That's my opinion, plus i spent 3 hours building it. whistler yesterday was SWEET, had a really awesome time with al, dave and gaffers bro (craig) hit up the new glc drop and got a lot better than last year... we were flowing a line and i was making all of the jumps.
thanks for giving us a ride Al, we had a really awesome time:thepimp:
rampage 01
06-01-2003, 12:54 PM
and mike... i don't know if you just don't understand things, or are just a lil' slow. originally we wanted to build a nice flowy jump after the drop, which would have been fairly cool because you could flow into lower simons nicely, and for the jump you wanted speed. So the original thinking would have been to move the tranny back, so you can approach the jump with more speed.
BUT, with the new addition, it just doesn't make sense...... your travelling at a somewhat fast pace, and as soon as you hit that lip (if you can call it that) it takes away all your forward momentum, and replaces the forward momenum into upwards (ie. you lose most of your speed) so basically your dropping like a rock, onto a tranny with NO speed, and than have to approach a gap. It is totally idiotic, and not at all thought out. I have heard many different peoples oppinions on the new additions, and they all feel the same way as i do. SO, since this is a democracy (cme, craig, blake paul, you) the votes out weigh you 4-1. It WILL get torn down in the near future, and PLZ think of things before you do it

Hey this should concern all shed riders and riders in general.
I was finishing a ride earlier tonight with a bud at what now seems to be the infamous air-drop-to-gap-nothing-with-no-flow on stairway;) Just buggin ya Mike
The hole that was dug right underneath the new lip on the drop was what I would consider the sight of a smouldering hole - or a large potential fire :censored: Seriously.
Here's what went down. I went to look at the new lip at the end of Stairway before hitting it. When I made it underneath the lip there was 2 other riders that asked me if I knew anything of a small fire. I looked down into the hole that was dug for tranny dirt and it was smoldering quite good. I emptied what water I had in my pack into it and essiantially put it out minus some lower heated areas. I moved some dirt around with a stick and found an aerosol can slightly buried beneath the dirt along with another log that was burnt quite good.
After I finished my ride, I drove to the fire hall on Kittison Parkway and told them of the situation. I took them to the site where they brought along a shovel and a collapsable water bucket. They poured some water in the hole after churning some dirt. It was still fairly hot as one fireman pointed out.
I will be checking on the site sometime tomorrow - hopefully in the a.m just to make ure.
Now before people start crying for the head of another trail nazi, I found it coincidental that the new-teeters-on-the lower-log-after-the-high-log-splits-off-after-the-triple-teets (whew!) looked to be spray painted and that there was an aerosol can in the aforementioned hole. Which actually suggests either a trail nazi has got their hands in graffiti and arson or we shouldnt forget to look past those in our own midst.
Now if anyone is burning trail building supplies or what was used, this is completely unacceptable and won’t be tolerated by myself and others - I know others feel the same. I havent emailed the Goats / Delta Bike Club yet but I will be shortly after copying and pasting this message to the main forum as its own thread.
Comments from who I assume to be the Fire Cheif of Engine No. 5 in regards to a trail builder using fire (or something along those lines - I know almost every and any trailbuilder knows better to do this especially when its getting to the dry point of the year) was to monitor the fire, dont use combustibles such as the aerosols (thats a given I'd hope) and if anyone does notice smoke or even a fire to please stop by the fire hall and show them where exactly it is as they admitted they never would've found the trail. As it turns out, they have very little information on the trail network in the Shed at this point. On a note, I'm wondering if they did have a better 'blueprint' of our trails would this help our cause with the Corp. Of Delta in regards to what we could build and liability with improved response times from the Fire Dept. Something I definately plan to look into with the Goats and "the shed" Fire Dept.
A huge thank you goes out the Fire Dept on Kittison Parkway in Delta, B.C for their time and efforts. Also to the two unknown riders for their concern
A huge kick in the junk and to their trail karma goes out to the person responsible for this negligent action
Dave @ Rocky Cycle
ps: thanks to everyone who actually read this far ;)

well i'm gonna be coming back the the shed sooner than i thought, i'm borrowing money (be in debt forever but its summer right now so i could care less) and buying a brand new 2002 super, or 2003 super. I'm trying to decide between the two, and i don't care about the tire clearance, but i do care about the cryofit. So looks like i might come out for the next shed ride even! :fu: :fu: .
and on another note i will soon have a 2003 dj2 for sale with like 7 or 8 ride old lowers, 3 ride old uppers and brand new steerer . not that anyone will buy it after what i have said about it.

I should be getting to the school at about 4:00. Lets meet at the jumps though. Easier for everyone, since while you're waiting you get to jump :woot:. I'll bring the camera (avec the RIGHT lense) and shoot off the rest of the film. I've got from about 4:00 until about 6:00, and I plan to spend the whole time at the jumps. Head off to other trails if you want, but I'm going to learn to jump well or die trying!

Yes I was in the shed today and yes i made the fire. Last friday when i rode Stairway 2 rungs were taken off the drop to purposely hurt someone. I looked at the huge pile of wood and thought hmm, someone sabotaged my trail and I thought what would be the next best way to do that. I made sure that the fire was in that huge hole so it wouldn't spread. I'm sorry if I disappointed you but i didn't want someone else to start the fire for me and destroy the whole trail. Yes it sounds crazy but anything is possible. I was there from 8-3:30 and i made sure that when i left the fire had no fuel left to burn. I should have put some dirt on it but I was very tired from building the 2 new teeters.
Thank you for putting the dirt on the fire to put it out completely and thank you for your concern.
Plus i hit the drop several times and because the tranny is very steep I got tons of speed.
Erik those are certainly not your thoughts those are Al's thought's. Al eventually you'll do the drop and realize that it's way more fun now.
Erik, you kept on whinning that the drop is too easy we'll guess what happened now it's harder and still, you complain. :D

06-02-2003, 09:18 AM
wtf, that's one of the dumbest thing i've heard someone do. there's no logical reason to start a fire under any circumstances. unless u are lost and have to spend a night there and if it's really cold.
2 rungs got taken out, big deal, dont burn down the whole fricken place.

keep your pants on. The fire was in a hole that was a meter deep and i've been camping hundreds of times. When i left the fire was dead, just ash was left. Don't cry WOLF WOLF yet. The new teeters are nearly done they just need grip and 3 more stops so the board doesn't flex.

The spray paint can was empty because I used it to PAINT the teeter totter. It rolled in the fire hole when i was moving the lumber I needed for the teeter. Jeeze, why do i even bother. :???:

The fact that you painted the teeter totter aside (what happened to natural?), I was just ASKING for an EXPLANATION for the fire. You said you've started it. Not with the spray paint. Alright...but WHY.

mike, no matter what the explanition was.... that was just pure ignorance. it doesn't matter if youve gone camping before. THERE WAS NO POINT in starting that fire...... you need to learn and THINK things through, and obviously you didn't take enough time and care in extinguishing the fire because as someone was riding along the trail, he and his buddy found it smouldering, which could have started a fire...... YOU could have screwed the shed for all of us, not just the riders, but all of the users.

Go take out the lip from the drop, If you can. You weren't there so you don't know anything. The fire was dead and it was in a hole 1 meter deep. I made the fire because there was a ton of scrap wood pretty much everywhere and i didn't want anyone else to use that wood to build other junk but mainly so they couldn't use that wood to sabotage the drop to cause harm to other riders. And yes the two rungs that were removed is a big deal. If I would have slowed down because of the missing rungs, I wouldn't be here posting this shiznat for all you un-appreciating riders. last fire related note, I was with ashogunnamedmarcus and that pit was smoking really, really good.. like it was still going and smoking hard.. it was seriously hot... there were ashes that were still damned hot.. I don't think that there should be any fires. period.
Anyways, we've all said our part.. kill it off.. Mike gets the point.
Regarding the lip, I'll put my 2 cents in and say that I'm not a fan of it. I think that stairway is right up there with one of the best stunts in the park if not THE best in the park, however, that lip doesn't flow to me nor do I feel safe going off it.. I've talked to lots of people and they say the same thing(very experienced riders).. Everything else is awesome about that stunt, except that.. and I think that one other person mentioned that if you are planning a gap or something at the end there.. I don't think that there will be enough speed for it as the lip takes u up and down rather then with nice flowy speed. I donno.. it's not my stunt, and I'm just putting in my 2 cents... but people are complaining, I think that rather then say.. "this is my stunt.. ride it if you like".. I'm personally a perfectionist.. I'd want a stunt that everyone that comes to it would think.. "shit that's an awesome stunt.. it has everything.. super high log ride, challenging teeters, nice flowy drop.. yep.. that's the best stunt in the park!"
I think that rather then just bitch about it.. perhaps it would be best to offer my help and perhaps others would too. I'm here if you need help man.. just name a time and place.
Just voicing my opinion to make the shed safer and continue to make it the most kick ass local place to ride.

oh... Went for a pretty good shed ride today and I think that the little lip on the end of the stairway drop is wayyy too short... It's only like 3 feet long...
With a 3 foot long little ramp what ends up happening is that your front end gets kicked up instantly, and b/c your back tire isn't even on the jump yet, you nose right back down afterwards... Even hitting it with speed would be sketch...
If you're going to have any type of kicker or ramp on top of the already good drop, you might as well make it long enough to be a real jump, and not an awkard bump at the end...
Mike if you can't understand that, maybe it's cause of your 7 inches in the back and 7 up front...
By the way dual 24's kick ass for log rides, but it's tooo damn slow with a 3 inch tire up front.. I'm gonna have to keep my Z3's and get a nice 26 inch.. for now..

Sorry if it seems like we dont like the new lip/work on the drop but I was thinking before you added it that you should move the tranny farther forward for more air - which a longer lip than the one you have would work great.

I'd have to agree to with that. I've been running a 24 x 3" up front and 24 x 2.7" rear for the last year basically and the logs be my bitches yo. well.. most of the time  .
From my experience so far, its best to keep both the wheel sizes the same unless its a real personal preference. I just put my 26" mag 30 with a 2.8 mich on the front and probably had the worst ride i've had in a long ass time - even though the michelin hooked up way better than my 3" arrow prime wide. Just felt goofy - very similar to my stab primo when i had a 26 x 3" up front and a 24 x 2.7 in the back. Just thew the geometry off.
there's my other 3 cents... any need change :)

I found with that lip, and not going too fast, I was coming down with my rear wheel near the top of the tranny (and this was on my hardtail). I then saw another guy do it on a dually - and he did the same thing twice - moderate speed, near the top of the lip. So I dont think moving the tranny forward would be a good idea.
Again, good work guys.

With a 3 foot long little ramp what ends up happening is that your front end gets kicked up instantly, and b/c your back tire isn't even on the jump yet, you nose right back down afterwards... Even hitting it with speed would be sketch...
I'm not changing it and i'm sure you'd have a hell of a time trying. Zedbra rides a hardtail and he can do it fine so you should have no problem either. You just have to get used to your new bike. The more speed you have the better it is (not sketch). So quit shitting your pants when you look at the lip and do it.

THAT'S THE MIKE I USED TO LOVE!!!
I don't think that it's totally pointless... I even like the idea of a small kicker at the top of a fairly small drop, but we have to make it long enough to EVENLY kick the whole bike up, not just bump it up...
Also for max flow, we should get a bunch of people together and move the tranny back like 2-3 feet... that way it would flow so nice..
Whenever something cool like this needs to be done, we should do it together so Mike doesn't have to bust his ass, and risk having other people not like it....

The one with the much disputed drop to tranny is Stairway. The log with the single teeter totter after it to tiny drop is Lower Simons. The one in the gulley below THAT is called BM I believe (another one of Simon's creations).

Then another guy on a full suspension ride came up and he was going a little slower and he did case the tranny. It kicks you up perfectly for that tranny. Dunno why noone likes it, it just looks menacing.

but i can tell u for sure 150%, the T2 can be converted to regular. The T2 is an OEM fork, exact same as regular, it just doesnt have the catridge, you can buy the catridge and put it on and it will be a regular monster.
