View Full Version : Flat Tires and Karma

We discovered last night that stopping and helping out a fellow rider doesn't necessarily give good karma. Last night 5 of us shuttled Seymour. At the bottom of CBC, on the rocky road, we came across 2 kids that were struggling with a flat. They had a spare tube but no pump!

We gave them sh*t, fixed their tire, and sent them on their way. Just as we were about to take off, Shirk noticed that he had a flat. So we fixed that. As he was putting away the last of his stuff, I took off and headed for the little creek gap on the road.

I gave a couple of quick pedal kicks to pick up some speed but my chain had slipped to the small chainring and to shorten the story, I came up short on the gap and flatted. Grrrr...

Fortunately, we had tubes, pumps and lights. If you're riding after work at this time of year, be prepared. Sh*t happens!

Holy, that is crazy! Kind of like what happened on Sunday in total, the three of us riding had 5 flats!

You could have yelled at me though... I had to hike from the Original SIn step up all the way to the gondola... boo... then I realised that my buddy had the keys to my truck...

Doh!

you forgot that my battery was also dead, and that dumbass me didn't tighten the funn bolts on my rear hub. Something felt wrong in the rear, but I never bothered to stop and check.

Great ride!

We gave them sh*t

Karma does work. You gave the kids a hand but gave them shit at the same time. Being mean to someone will get ya in the end.

He didn't say we gave them shit. He said sh*t.

that means we taught them about the perils of riding without a pump and so late in the day. they ended up walking out of Pangor in the dark with thier second flat.

We waited for them of course.

Got you beat. Riding the Rainbow Rim trail on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in back in May, 2 of us had 8 flats. The first flat was due to a torn side wall, the rest were from locust thorns. If anyone else is riding there, I'd recommend Slime tubes.

so what you're saying is you're suffering from a loose rear end but you like it that way.

Giving them sh#t would be an over statement. More like pointed out the error in their ways. Also told the suhttle mom waiting for them at the bottom not to let them ride without being prepared, especially this time of year.

I don't think I want to know why your better half likes you with a loose caboose heckler :)

we saw a couple kids, with a flat, Mag30s and those shitty Stout tires. No tube, no tirelevers, no pump. There's no way you're going to get those off without metal levers. I gave him my tube, he was all like "what's that?" cause it was Presta. I tried to get the tire off for him, but broke a tire lever, and told them to have a nice walk.

Then last Sun I was riding at SFU and popped of the Pole to the right, and landed a little funny and popped the sidewall off my rim. My Stans Rimstrip was all wonky, and i couldn't get it to re-inflate. So I went to put my new tube in, and it was a Shraeder, my Dee-max are Presta. doh.. Then two "hardcore" guys, (at least they sounded Core, they couldn't ride worth shit.) rode buy me and my upside down bike without saying anything. I ran the rest of the way, and almost beat them out..

Don't worry guys, it was only a little friendly ribbing. I'd give'em "sh*t" too.

same thing happened on Fromme last night. Two young guys with a flat. Had patches but no pump. We gave them a pump and about 20 minutes later the group behind us told us that the same guys had another flat and hit them up for a pump. If you aren't carrying ALL the necessities, why carry any?

At Whistler on Labor Day Weekend, we had a few guys ask us for patches, pumps, tools...EVERYTHING! I am surprised that people will drop 48 bucks on a lift pass and then waste huge amounts of time looking for someone nice enough to give them all the stuff they need to fix a flat. As for Karma, about 20 minutes after I provided friggin' full service flat repair, I got one myself:crybaby:

On an unrelated note......some guy was bombing up Fromme on a dirtbike last night. wtf? Climbing up sucking on exhaust = lame.

you should tell Sharon about that. or get the parks e-mail from her. They are not suppose to be there, definetly lame.

Well who better than someone with experience in the ass!

Last summer, or was it this summer...no it was last..anyways, last summer 3 of us managed to pop 12 tubes in 3 runs...I am still not quite sure how.

3 years ago, or was it 4..whatever. Lee went through a TON of patched tubes during one run down seymour. He was still faster, riding with a flat at the bottom, than the people we passed.

honestly the extra weight of dhtubes and dh tires is worth it. i ran kenda 2.5s for a year and now michelin dh32s for a year with no flats at all. , ive rode sharp rockgardens, square edge hits, shale, even the odd cactus ive accedentally ran over. still nothing at all. *pstshhh as both my tires go flat haha* but seriously, its worth it.

This has been going on now for a few months, there are 2 bikes they are almost always together and they rip Fromme every night after work then on the way down they hit the kill switch and coast all the way down mountain hwy to the gas station on the corner and load
up in a truck.

I see them almost every night when I am walking the dog up there. I stopped them one time and they got in my face big time.

Not sure if it's the same guys, but to dirt bikes passed us on a climb up Fromme on Saturday. I'm really not a big fan of the noise and smell of dirt bikes during my forest experience, but at least these guys were reasonably polite. They slowed as they caught up with bikers and passed in single file making lots of room for us.

As for legality, I don't think they're any more or less legal than mountain bikes on that dirt road (the sign at the bottom DOES say no bicycles, motorcycles ...). It's not a highway so not covered by the MVA and it's an uncontrolled road on public property.

As long as they don't get any ideas about trying out the trails I can live with it.

Now, back to the originally scheduled thread topic. Something about flat tires?

Wanna talk karma... Get this, I think about four different rides in the last month I've had catastrophes (somewhat):

1) 2 flats (no more tubes at this point, had to walk down road after CBC, thankfully somebody picked me up)
2) Bent derailer hanger, bent disk rotor, scratched stantion on my travis
3) Bent derailer hanger, dented top tube of frame
4) went to start a ride up at CBC, pull bike out of car, has a flat tire (Didn't have one when loaded in, by the looks it came apart at a seam, never seen this before), tried another tube, didn't work, patched it, inflated, blew patch, therefore no ride.

I think I have the worst karma......When's the next trailday?

Not to mention, the roof rack ripped right off the roof of my car driving down the highway earlier in the summer with bikes on it. That was a fun time for sure. I really enjoyed it.

Connor was witness to at least two of these incidents.

m-rock, you'd best show up at Parkgate at 9 AM on sunday to refill (or open) your karma bank.

CBC trail day this sunday October 1!
