View Full Version : I suck at jumping

I just never feel comfortable taking off or in the air, even when I'm landing smoothly. Can someone point me to somewhere with some smallish dirt jumps/gaps/tabletops to practice on?
Also interested to hear others' jumping tips/techniques...Thanks.

Loutet park in North Vancouver has probably the best facilities to learn to jump at. Small linked tables in the forest, then 3 lines which offer excellent progression right up to the big middle set. East end of 14th Ave/St. east of Grand Boulevard then follow the trail down towards the forest into the little gully thing...

Hey Mike.T, I had exactly the same problem. However, a 2 hour session with Darren at endless biking solved the problem. I am still crap at Dj's, but I now know and understand the technique and they 'feel' at lot better and there is far less fear involved in the whole process. I can now progress.
I also second mattj's recommendation; Loutet is a great place to learn. Once you can clear the last table/very low gap you can then do the set of 4-5 on the left hand side.

also GlenEagles in Horseshoe bay on marine drive.
H, how many tables do they have at Gleneagles, and do you know if inter-river is up and running yet?

there's also a really nice small set at the pipeline track at lafarge in coquitlam, perfect for starting out. and the pump track is fun to check out too.
i bailed off the larger set on sunday...gotta love picking out dirt from your elbows :(
as for getting better? lots of practice

I-R not yet open, still a construction site.
Eagles has a good range of 3-pack tables and some drops.

stay loose in the air and spot your landing... even if you can't find actual jumps to practice on, you can always find rocks / logs / whatever to pop off of on the trail... good way to practice maintaining balance while airborne

Practice helps alot. Another thing that helps alot is having someone coach you and provide feedback immediatly.
A bunch of guy's built a rythm section out here. It's great for all as everyone is helping each other out with little technique problems.

Yup, the best instruction I've had was from Mike Johnston (sp?) who is the head instructor in the Whistler bike park (he posts on the board, maybe he'll comment). My suggestion is to get a few friends together and book a private lesson.
In about 3 hours he can take you from a complete noob to being able to clear the 4th table in the practice area with comfort and confidence.
A few years ago I took the Schley camp. The pros know how to ride, but their teaching skills...

Some pro's can coach others can't. Like anyone else on the planet they are human and have thing's they can do and can't.

i suck at jumping too, never get as much pop as the rest of the group I'm with (ie same speed, same-ish bikes). Of course, they're more practiced so maybe loutet is a good idea for me

Great place is pipeline (lafarge). Best thing in jumpings progression. First day I hit the little jumps at lafarge ,I hit the 8 pack. Might sound a little crazy but whatever. Now i can hammer off the 8 pack without a problem. Best thing to do is go alone, ive never felt that having a bunch of guys teaching me how to jump works. Everyone jumps different. Push your limits, and practise. I should be at pipeline tomorrow round 2- 230 or so if you want to get the ropes shown. Cya

Those who really want to get better ,nothing to me beats practice, practice ,practice, with good jumpers if you can.
My son help me out all the time djing as I progress, things like load up the bottom of the jump etc.. that and stay loose.
This sat. sept 30 noon-- Sardis (just s.e. of freeway chilliwack exit) Westside dj park's finished and a Jam is set to go 2pm. Should be lots of good jumpers and not so good to watch,or get on the bike and show your stuff. Prizes/ food/ pop/ everything will be free --we are looking for tents etc..music so those notoriously hangers on to their money ???
12-4 we should be done ,still time to hit up the vedder.
Membership forms to fvmba and executives to talk it up with.

steveston dj park isnt too bad, starts at some 1 footers and moves up a few feet at a time between 6 or 7 rows
so you can get some good practice in there and not have to run all over town while progressing.
