View Full Version : That new ALine section

So, a new section of ALine opened today.
You know those two lippy tables on Dirt Merch just before the small rock-drop to huge step up? The new section on Aline has 4 of those in a row.
Today it wasn't packed down, and was a bit muddy, so it was squirmey and a bit sluggish. I think with proper pumping technique and good, fast dirt, they'd all be clearable.
I had trouble with that section today, and might for awhile.
Any others have similar experiences? Any thoughts on the new section?
i'll know what you're talking about on monday, hopefully it will be the dryer conditions you speak of by then.

more of those? of all tables, i HATE those 2 the most. it's like running into a curve wall. seems to me that tables are getting steeper and steeper... am i wrong or is that the new thing?

hopefully they aren't like those two hits on DM, cause they're pretty much the worst on the mountain......

they are similar but they will see some work done I think, deep steep trannies, soft takeoffs right now, where there were 2 dbls now there are 4 in a row....berm, muddy roller the small table the your at After Atlantis and intot he rest. Anyone hit up Karate Monkey past Smoke and Mirrors, sweet loamy bermy singletrack goodness, favorite lower mtn trail right now....

Karate Monkey was very nice!
the new aline jumps are sweet! theyre actual dirt jumps with real lips. true they are a little muddy but once it dries up and they get packed down a little more theyll be perfect. aline is so nice right now.

The lower run of a-line is in great shape but I'm not a fan of the new work on top. Bit lippy for my tastes. I am solidly in the DM camp for my airmiles for the rest of the season.

It is very nice actually. Love the new work in that dip before you duck under the bridge.
But I saw a good buddy of mine go down with a compression fracture in his spine yesterday because of those bloody masonry blocks. Railing the burms above the a-line rock drop he went a little high onto the dirt above the top line of blocks. It looks stable but it ain't. His front wheel just stopped on a block and he slid for a good 10 feet on his noggin. When we were waiting there for him to get himself together we saw another person wipe on the opposite burm in the same way.

you ain't the only one.....rode this yesterday for the first time. Everything on the mountain was so great and the weather was good but I just wasn't feeling any love for that new section. Completely lost my speed, couldn't clear anything. Not the usual flowy, fast a-line trip. Maybe this will change once the blue groove is set but I think these are just too lippy, and too close together to let you keep the typical a-line speedlimit red-line maxed....
On the flip side, DM to lower a-line was just simply a blast. The buffage on lower a-line is soooo nice right now. If only something could be done with that rocky connector section that wants to rattle the fillings out of my teeth......

I'm pretty unsold on upper a-line now too.....especially after dm/a-line combo buckets all day long! the monkey slapper was awesome, and sidetrack was definitely worth the wait.....you ride stuff like that and then the new section of upper a-line, and in the end, it always feels like new work on a-line is over-rushed......sidetrack = unbelievably awesome and well built...
Too deep, steep and lippy for me....

I have to agree the new tables really ate away the speed through that section. The mud sure didn't help. I tried going way offline but that mud really saps the go out of ya. I would have to say that the ramp up is getting steeper. Even the jump under the chair just before crossing the road seemed to get steeper. Dirt Merchant is definitely a faster more flowing run at this point. It is the end of the year and maybe they are trying some variations to see what the feedback is like.

I forgot to get a run in on side track.....sounds like I missed out on a great trail......grrrrr if only.........

those two lippy tables on DM before the drop to big step are sweet
i think the new a-line works just needs some time to dry and set up ... and some tweakin for sure
i think sidetrack could use some tweaking myself. some jumps you coast in and hit the hard line and easily make tranny. other jumps (2 hips im thinking of) you pedal in, pop the easy line and still dont really hit tranny ... so i'd say a little tweaking on those would really help.

Apparently there is some local dude up there who doubles those 2 hits on DM. Sounds like chaos to me but shouldn't be surpised when you look at those dj's to the left of the lift.
I couldn't clear the new A-Line section either yesterday but that's OK. It took me a while to be able clear those two on DM and now I love them. I'll get that new section soon enough. Bigger badder jumps just help me learn.
Whistler was amazing yesterday. SOOO buff.

I think that was Cedric talking about Lopes, or something like that. I think he was joking.
I don't think they work with the rest of A-Line at all. I almost had to half my speed to hit the downslopes of the new jumps. I'm sure they would be fine on a 5x5 but they suck on a big bike. They should have let the guy who built Sidetrack do the re-work. I hope you don't end up needing a different bike for Garbo and the bottom.

that seems possible, considering i pretty much land in between them most of the time. doesnt anyone else overshoot the first one alot?

aline was mint today, new section not liking it. u have to slow down alot for it, and when u do it kills the flow for the rest of the trail, after the section, u comes or a nice burm, then pedal hard to get to the two larger tables. should be 3 flowy jumps instead of cramming 4 then they could be a bit longer too.

DM to Lower ALine seems to be the choice run these days.
I appreciate all the work that got put into it...it just doesn't seem to be working.

were is this new section at on aline???
Granted I have not seen the new jumps but I love people who bitch about brand new jumps being to slow, or killing your flow ect... give it a time to pack down and for the builders to tweak them, no jump is perfect right after you build it, it takes time.

Tom Pro's report on the main page
http://www.nsmb.com/shore_news/pro_update4_09_06.php says this: The trail crew is doing some maintenance on A-Line and tweaking the new section of jumps. We realize that the jumps were a little lippy (like some people we know) so we tamed them down a little bit. Hope you like them.
Dude that part is sooo fun, people are such ingrates!!
Sidetrack is the bomb diggity too !

First section, just a little bit in after the road crossing under the lift.
If you ride Upper Aline, you won't miss them.

Maybe all you guys that have such a hard time with a-line should go into the woods and try and build your own trails. I was just up there and had no problems cleaning it all, same as the weekend before. Why are you so afraid of change, were you planning to do backflips and 3's over the old ones? Stop the crying, it impares your vision when you're riding the trails, and I don't want to get stuck behind you guys:banana: .

^thank you! I also only rode that section once (the Saturday when they first opened it up. I cleared all 4 jumps just fine even with the little soft spot...
Just pin it.

Sounds like a great improvment. I have not seen it but it seams like the bitching is complaing is from people that have less bike skills, "the lips are to steep", "the jumps are hard to clear" ect... ride faster or wait for the jumps to get packed down, sounds like you need to practice.
I had similar complaints on a jump that I built, someone said "imposable to hit on a fullsuspention" after trying to do it a day after it was built. If they cant clear the jump than its clearly built wrong. I am willing to bet these people that bitch and complain have never built a jump in there life. Next year they will say the jumps are to small.
Anyway cant wait to hit the new section up next week!

I quite enjoyed what they have done. The first time down it on Friday I was less than pleased but after a few trips, all was well!

the old jumps were not better, you were just used to them. All of a sudden theres a new section thats a little bit different and they can't get it right away they blame it on the trail, start to cry and make stupid comments.
I don't think whistler decides to change things up:werd: because they are bored one day and feel like pissing people off. They do it because they're trying to make the bike park sweeter for all of us to rip to shreds. I don't think anyone should expect their precious a-line to stay the same year after year, with the crazy amounts of riders coming down it every summer. We destroy it with every lap, and we still expect every jump and berm to stay the same everytime we ride. If it wasn't for change, everyone would still live in their parents basement, and have horrible smelling underware.

Naah I've got through them OK I just think small steep tables aren't a lot of fun, especially on a big bike. I'd rather have a fast section into a Crabapple size jump or two and then a 180 berm with a wallride extension out the top.

OK for all those saying the jumps are great and for all those saying they sucked. I did at first, not like them, not because of the lips or the change but because of the mud between the jumps sapped all your mojo and you couldn't clear the next table. That was Sept 23 weekend. It would appear that the crew realized there was an issue with the saturated soil and promptly drained it or placed plywood down. Now I can agree the seciton is great all weekend it stayed dry and fast. I was able to clear all of them except the last one. So to round it out. They sucked in Sept but rocked in Oct.

Im not saying anything like that. Im saying people dislike the trail because they don't give it a chance to get dialed, expect to clean everything right away, and then make stupid comments. The first time I rode it you could still see the shovel marks, of course its not going to flow right away when its a little muddy and the dirt hasn't even packed. I dont care about anybody else, but I know what I'll be ripping when I come up for my last weekend of the bike park, and loving it.
