hey all,
I was just wondering if anyone wants another lift open to biking up whistler. something like a pro line lift that you would need a special pass to go up on, maybe get an instructor to evaluate you in garbonzo to get a pass but it wouldnt cost anything besides the lift ticket.
(I know i stole this idea off of another thread).
I personally would like some huck and big gap trails.
Your thoughts.

How would whistler be able to prosper from it though? i just dont know if there would be enough people buying passes for it to run an extra chair for experts only. And plus having to take a test to ride there would turn away a lot of people...cool idea though!

you want a paid professional to ride around with individuals to make sure that they are competent riders so that they can go onto an exclusive section of the mountain with its own trails and own chair lift and you don't want to pay for it?
good luck
but if you were to open trails in one section similar to how the pro terrain park is set up in the winter but even then with a huge forrest and many trails that would be very hard to regulate.

Cove boy,put thought into your posts.
Yah, the lift thing would never work. No profit for whistler.
its done in the winter though isn't it? theres a black terrain park that you need you pass activated for.
Sure its not gonna happen anytime soon but in the future maybe.
Personally I think garbanzo needs way more development before anyone talks about new lifts.
If you really wanna go sit on lots of chairs all day take a trip to the portes du soleil, 26lifts open to bikes.

That's what Garbonzo is except for the fact that technically anyone can go up. I don't know why people are making such a big deal of the whole Garbonzo problem. It takes one trip up for these riders to realize that it's not for them.
I'd say that if another lift was to be opened up to bikers a good option would be the emerald chair. It would link the garbonzo/fitz/roundhouse areas perfectly and would open up a whole lot of terrain that could be accesible by a wider spectrum of riders.
Can't see it hapenning. As someone said, that's what Garbo is.
Cool idea: Whistler should contract the Woodlot builders for a few weeks to build a "Pro" style run, like Platinum. Make it a tough entrance, and voila.

It's done in the winter for the high level park with a special High level pass that costs 15$. Access to that park is limited to those who have the pass. However, there is no test to determine if you have a certain skill level. I'm sure they make it clear it is only for experts, but there is no formal test. Essentially, to get this pass, you have to pay 15$ and sign a waiver to release all liability. However, WB has the right to take away your pass if they see you ski/board like a newb and deem you over-estimated your skill level...
In terms of a winter terrain park, this is feasible since the area is relatively small and controllable. Also, there is no need for a formal test since I think the extra hassle involved in getting the pass keeps most newbs out and if one does get a pass, it takes about 30 sec to spot them and kick them out...
This would not be the case for a whole section of the mountain. I can't imagine WB would put ressources & money into "testing" people and they couldn't just easily observe people from the top to potentially kick them out...

I think the guys that currently build at whistler are more than qualified to handle building a "pro" trail, if it were needed. Granted, platinum is a fabulous trail. The crew there obviously spend many hours each year keeping it prime. Having said that, the Whistler crew have far more experience building, maintaining, and designing stuff.
Having said that, I don't think that we would see a "Pro" lift anytime in the near future. Having a Pro lift isn't going to attract more riders to Whistler, "Pro's" go there as it's already the premier place in the world to ride. The resourses needed to build difficult trails in difficult terrain, just aren't there. A crew of 5 working 8 hours per day for 3 weeks would develop maybe 500' feet of solid built trail. From an economic point of view why would the resort commit a huge amount of $$$ that won't attract more business? Finally, from a liablity point of view, "Pro" trails are a huge risk. Notice how quickly the "Pro" lines from crankworks were dismantled/closed.

Starting to think that "Pro" lines/trails are best built in discrete locations elesewhere in the valley.

i say they just put in expert only trails like d1 and put the same signs up at the entrance. it seemed to scare off lots of riders.

yah thats good . So little 8 year olds at the bmx track racing shouldnt have gear, there not pros. They shouldnt wear full faces either because there not pros. You only do 5 ft drops, DD did them on rigids back in the day, you shouldnt have suspension than because a pro could do it without suspension. yah thats real smart

Everyone who purchased a season's pass has already signed a waver. Why not build the stuff we all want. It's done in Silverton, CO. Remember the 25ft step down river gap?
Or at least leave some of the Crankworx stuff up. We paid for it didn't we?

hey guys, sorry i didnt say this in my first post but i know it wouldnt happen any time soon because of the cost and the fact that almost no one would want to hit it, i was just thinking that since they have a begginer chair, a begginer-expert chair, and an advanced-expert chair, why no put in a pro chair? Or they could have a pro area accessed off of garbo like 2 minutes down the service road or somthing like that, so its out of the way and begginers won't want to go over there to "check them out"

Where there is a chair and a trail, you will have people "checking it out".
It is a mix of curiosity and an ignorant state-of-mind that brings a complete beginner to the top of Garbo and then tumbling down Goat's Gully. That combined with the ease of trail entry keeps the danger level very high.
I'm sure some of the builders, frequent flyers and local workers are lurking in these threads.
In between the 99% bullsh*t, hopefully they will pick out the key factor and well-thought out suggestions :
Build a skilled stunt at the beginning of each double-black diamond run on the mountain to give some notice to anyone not familiar with that run a sign of what's to come around the corner.

close but no cigar. the blackcomb nintendo highest level terrain park needs a seperate 20$ pass for the entire year, no one evaluates you, anyone with 20$ can go snap their legs on one of the many 50+ foot booters and infinity kink rails all over the park.

Yes they do and it's funny because if you only go up to Whistler on weekends, it would cost you around $20 a day if you bought a season's pass.
That's dirt cheap compared to the winter passes.
I'd pay for more access. Without hesitation. The season's pass is cheap as it is now.

The step-down road gap to big step-up gap just below the wood spine in the Boneyard will be open to the public for the weekend as will the Mavic Start Box, so have at it.
We have also opened a new 25' step-down gap at the bottom of the Biker-X.

Can you do something about the super dry conditions? The dust (yes dust) is gathering in some spots on the mtn like sandtraps. Sure it makes your favorite line a little more interesting but it can get dangerous at times. A good rain keeps everything settled but relying on the weather is an exercise in futility at best.
Would it be possible to:
a) use the snow machines to shoot water in the evening/early morning.
b) sweep out the loose pebbles and rocks in the major corners and landings.
c) lay a retardant down after a good rain.

I prefer to pray for rain when it's too dry.
Then when it comes down in buckets and I pray for dry conditions.
Funny how that works... :)

I noticed that at Silverstar they put down old carpet runners on heavy braking areas. Looks a bit trailer park but works really well.
Regarding the whole exclusive notion of 'Extreme trails', hey people we live and ride in BC - aren't there enough places around the lower mainland that have stuff for the go-big crowd?
As a commerical operation, Whistler caters for a very broad cross-section of riding talent and opening up extreme lines (road gaps etc) would be surely asking for trouble. It would drain resources that are needed to maintain their existing trail network and we all know how beat they get after long periods without rain.

It's always going to be a problem in North America with true extreme trails for mountain biking. If they weren't then why do people bitch on here about the "dumbing"down of trails/stunts?
North America is the continent of cover your ass and when I get hurt sue somebody mentality. This isn't Europe where they tend to view it as pilot error.
Meaning you are the pilot. You made the choice to ride Goats Gully. You made the choices that let you slam head first into tree. End of story.
Because of that what people will want on the mountain will exist. Only thing will be is to ride it will be based on who you know. Hence the secret trail.
Remember, Comfortably Numb was a secret trail once. I believe. called North Secret

The raling is on the Mavic Box and the Road gap to Step up is ready to go for the weekend. We have to close a few lines to open these features and it is viewed as an inconvenience by some people. So, if no one hits these features this weekend, it will be hard to get them open in the future. That is not to say that one should feel pressured to hit something that they are not ready for. Please use your head and have fun.

Don't forget for a second that WBP is all about profit. Running a "pro line" chair would do nothing for their bottom line. They aren't running Garbo at anywhere near its capacity and the fact that they rarely allow 3 people to load 1 chair (they only have 1 guy unloading at the top) speaks volumes. There just aren't enough people who would ride that terrain to warrant its existence.
Now, if the "pros" wanting to ride this kind of terrain would be willing to pony up the extra dough for it, I know WBP would jump on the idea. Would you be first in line for the pro ticket? I suspect if it cost extra, the line might be shorter than you think.

I'd pay an extra $10.00 a day to ride it if I could have upper FT and a NJ kind
of trail, maybe more ID type stuff too. Some gaps would be nice. For me,
the reason I ride the upper stuff is variety and it has a different feel up there.
