Went to Hoodlums after work today and took some shots of my buddy Dennis pulling off smooth whips on his DH bike. He hit up both big sets and rode the jumps smooth as butter all afternoon!!! Unfortunately alot of the lips are worn to shit so it was challenging to really boost.
Any way here are my 2 favourite shots from today.

yea hoodlums is really bad as far as lighting goes....its constantly dark and the faint rays of light that poke through can actually be a disadvantage. This all makes hoodlums a really challenging place to shoot. most photographers i talk to avoid hoodlums as well.

WTF! I have a green peeler as well and I don't go there anymore cuz i thought my bike was too big. I kept on bailing everytime I went there so I thought it was my bike, I guess not. Sweet whips anyway!

I see people shredding that place on bigger bikes than yours. You cannot blame your bails on your bike. You have to go back to sideshow and hit it up again. Your little brother is overtaking you.

I have seen many people shredding those jumps larger than HTs are big bikes there....but why would hitting sideshow help your jumping?

the lighting is whack.
it's tough with the canopy, but it's not like you don't have a flash to work with. you could shoot at night if you wanted.
i would start by taking a shot with out the flash and getting the forest lit properly. then i would step that down once and put the flash in there for the rider, being sure to avoid bouncing too much off the trees
directly working with those photos, I would guess that steping down the flash two or three clicks and opening the f stop two clicks would make a world of difference.
i do like the shots though.

yea good points
i just recently got my remote flash so i still have alot to learn. i'm not in a hurry to shoot hoodlums again lol.
also my f-stop was as open as it could go. and yea next time i will turn down the flash a bit and see how that works.
thx for the comments guys

then your ISO is certainly too low.
also, because you are flash illuminating the rider, you could get away with a shutter speed less fast than you think.
hell if you manage to get a nice exposure of the rider with a pretty low flash power (1/32? 1/16?) and shoot around 1/20-1/15 and sync the flash to fire at the end of the shutter, you will get a pretty nice trailing of the rider behind a crystal clear image. would take some tweaking, but that would allow you to soak up the forest and use the blur of the slow shutter for something unique.

your so wrong.
the borders kill the shots.

i would also be interested in trying this: leave the flash as bright as you have it CLOSE the aperature down. this will expose the rider properly with the bright flash. However, I would also leave the shutter open for a good second ot two. this will soak up the forest with a really nice deep depth of field. the rider will be crystal clear with the flash and the small aperature/low ISO.

the borders kill the shots.
yea i was jus foolin around with them....i wont make them that hudge next time.
thx alot mr charles!!!
yea i was using 250 as my shutter speed because the flash "freezes" the rider so yea it was my ISO for sure.
