is there such a thing? i've had good luck with mavic 321s in the past. not racing dh anymore, just pounding crap out of the north shore rocks. any recommendations? what's holds up well these days? lately i've mashed up a an alex dx and sun mtx. what should my next victim be?

I have yet to find anything that compares to the Mag30. I'm 230lbs (ish) and come up short all the time and though I've gotten some flat spots on the wheel, it's lasted me 2 seasons when others would have taco'd in under a month.

Heavy though....

Yah Mag 30s are great.

Personally, I like double tracks.

I have to second the mag30's built with some skill. I utterly abused them on my bighit and my only issue was a derailluer having the nerve to mess with my spokes. I love my 321's when I actually ride my bike - light wheels make for a nice difference.

if you can pedal a heavier wheelset, then Sun Doubletracks = no grief, no flatspotting, no cracking, no nothing :)

Yeah but you cant get the rim on its own as it comes as a complete wheelset.

Get the wheel built by a really good wheelbuilder. The build is more important than the rim as far as I am concerned.

but if you use the same (good) wheel builder to create your wheel, then a heavier duty rim like a Doubletrack will make for a stronger wheel than say using a Singletrack

Deetraks/Deemax just use 729 rims dont they?

I'd agree with the whole double track deal. If you don't mind the weight they'll never brake on ya. I rode one on the rear and single track up front on my hard tail. I got two to three seasons out of them. They are still good too. Swapped them over to the ladies bike so I'm onto the Mavic rims and so far so good.

I had bent spokes, broken spokes, loose spoke, absolutely zero maintenance on the dble tracks and single. I like them but the new lighter rims are nice.

What about Arrow DHX or FRX?

I have yet to HEAR about anyone doing any damage to one of those. But like i said, thats just what ive heard.

I second that!

Use 14 gauge spokes too. Ontop and Dizzy's NV both build killer wheels that'll last.

I've had excellent long term luck with Mavic 321s (now 729?). I'm currently running an Arrow FR rim on my front wheel and it is holding up really well as well.

I'd look to the Arrow if you prefere a narrower rim, but if you like 'm wide then the 321 is the way to go

EX721?

I just got mine built. Took it for it's first official ride today. Nice and solid and light too: 582g.

If you want I'll let you finish off my dying DM24 for $20. Shore tested by a newb.

Are you saying that I would be better off with a XC 717 build by a "really good wheelbuilder" than with a EX 721 built by the wheel builder at my LBS?

sorry, but come on. it's pretty obvious what the guy meant. in the even that you're actually not being sarcastic with this comment, then no, he's not saying that. when you're looking at high end freeride and downhill specific rims, most of them are pretty damn good. it does come down to the skill of the wheelbuilder to some degree, but freeride rims are meant for freeride and XC rims are meant for XC.

Aroow DHX's are the most bomb proof rim ever. and there there light compared to other rims, 820 grams for a 26" i personly run the FRX and i have a 24 i have beat on and have beat one, and its still rollong true. and when i say beat on i mean like 30 foot cases and 360's of 13 foot drops and tonnes of stuff that should have destroyed it. i still have it but i repaced it with a neew one just in case but they are so worth the little extra they cost.

And like every one else the person whom builds the wheel is most imporstant. you can also do 36 spokes 4 cross for even more strength, rather then 32 3 cross. but ive always ran 32 3 cross and been super happy.

Big fan of the Alex DX 32s. Nice and wide and have been running the shore with them for years.
