Funny how one can pay the same amount for a bike with a motor or one without.

Nice stuff! Its hard to ride a mountain bike after riding dirt bikes. How many hours on it roughly?

Here's mine when it was new:

I think it has around 50 or so hours, never raced and the guy changed the oil every 10 hours so mechanically, it's in great shape

I'm SO jealous of your bike....how close to 5 digits was it?

Jeff what happened to teh Yammy ?

it sold...and I didn't really feel like replacing the top-end every month.

.

50 hours sounds fairly low for an '04, I'm already at 12 hours and I've had the bike a month and a half.

I'm being super anal about oil changes. You have to be with a 4 stroke. In the manual they say every 7 hours for racing, but I'm following that even though I'm just out playing on the trails. Do you know what condition your valves are in?

Hey your bike is sweet too. If its a dirtbike its all good in my opinion. Mine listed for ~$7700 before tax, but the important part worth mentioning is the 60 month finance deal (with all the gear) for $200/month taxes in. Shit we can easily save that on groceries per month!

What did you have before?

Why in the hell would you want to finance a dirtbike for 60 months :S

This is my first bike, but I've ridden a few 125's and a Honda XR350.

For Zuki's they say no more than 20, so I'll probably do it every two rides ish

I also snagged some kickass gear for cheap in the US...Gaerne boots for 250

PS-if I'm ever in town we should go for a rip :coo:

Realisticly how far could one go on the highway/roads on a dirtbike (assuming you had a street legal kit on it) before you might as well have loaded it up in a truck. I work in abbotsford a couple days a week and could be in Mission in 5 minutes and at vedder in 35 Minutes.

you can go a whole day on one tank if you're not full-on the whole time...you could cruise highway speeds easily on one.

mmmmmmm i'm supposed to get a WR250F pretty soon, we'll see if that happens though because my dad might just give me his KTM 400EXC. or maybe i'll just use every bit of cash i have left on a new hardtail.

Wayne P

My tank will last roughly 3 hrs at race pace, from what I'm told. Its a 7L tank. I can ride for about 2 hours in the trees and use half a tank.

A KTM 400? That's a nice bike. Right in between the 250F and 450F for power.

but would you want to ?

Ive been riding vedder a bunch and the moto trails look really tasty.

Im not sure about the mission track but its about 5 minutes from where I work so I could take it out on lunch hour rips.

How little can a non mechanicly inclined guy spend on a decent bike? 2500 Bucks?

If you're a set and forget guy, you could get an early 90's four-stroke 250 (YZ or CRF), if you learn fast and are somewhat mechanically inclined, or know someone who is, you can get a 98-02 2-stroke 250 if you know people...the thing is, make sure you get someone who knows bikes to check it out, or else you'll kick yourself down the road.

4-strokes aren't much maitenence but you HAVE to change the oil regularly.

2-strokes are a blast to ride (a little too much for some) but you have to replace the top-end every month or so, if you learn to do it yourself it pretty much becomes like bleeding brakes or something like that.

PS-if you're interested in a early 90's (93 I think) Yamaha YZ250 (four-stroke) I know of one in good condition in the lower mainland for 1800...PM me.

Im only into it if I can get somplace fun to ride for an hour or two at lunch very close to where it will be parked. which would be off highway 11 in abby.

the last thing I need is anouther sport where I have to pack my shit up and drive somewhere to do it.

anything up in mission that isnt a forestry road.

i do not know what your talking about sir, no 2 stroke should be having to have the top end redone every month unless your running the shit out of it and forgettin there is a different gear than first..
Imo, 2strokes are a better choice, because when they do blow up, its alot cheeper to rebuild the top end (200-400) where as a 4 stroke depending on what you have can cost upwards of 800 to rebuild..as for low maitnence, you should be checking to make sure your valves are in spec quite often on your 4 strokes, where as 2 strokes are fairly set and forget untill they blow..

to ride a 2-stroke fast, you gotta be on the rev-limiter before every shift to maximize the powerband, as a result, your top-end goes very quickly. If you're racing, one month should be the maximum before you replace it. If you put around in the trees, you can probably get 2-3 months.

it depends alot, i can see 1month if racing on a smaller bike (85- bored over) probly a-month and a half on a 125, and almost 2 months on a 250, i know people that can get almost 3/4th of a year out of the top end on thier 250s.. and you cant deine that its a hell of alot more $$ to replace a fried topend in a 4 stroke where theres more parts to grenade.

Yeah, but if you're riding a 4-stroke, you're not redlining it (well you shouldn't be) Most of them you can short-shift to get all the power, so you really shouldn't need to replace the top-end.

PS-Rat, best bet is just call someone and see what the downlow on the track is.

yes 4 strokes do pull most power out of thier lowend, but put this together i logged 2 days on my buddys rmf250, 05, the bike has been ridden by a kid 120lbs, never abused i rode it 2 days, kept it low RPM, my first time back on a bike in ayear or so, and i handed it back to him at the end of the day with a dead spot and pinging and ticking, it hadnt been overheated, over reved, and the oil was clean as could be...

Great looking bikes. can't beat the 4 strokes imo, look at any pro races, you don't hear too many pingers...

Heres my 4 banger + hair dryer kit :D, not on two wheels tho..

I like 2 smokes and I like 4's - its all dirt bikes right? Can't go wrong with either. I seriously doubt that we'll still have 2 strokes within at the most 5 years though.

thats 1 thing i will agree too, they all have 2 wheels and engines, there fun as hell to ride so who gives a fuck if its a 2 or a 4 stroke as long as the end of the day under all the mud theres still a smile!
