View Full Version : Rear Hub?

Hey,

Iīm looking into buying a new rear hub. Right now Iīm running a JoyTech Disc hub, basically works fine but Iīm guessing itīs a piece of crap and the engagement really sucks. Additionally, a new rear wheel was the next thing on my things-to-update-list anyway. And the bolts on my bikesī rear end always come loose. I know that has nothing to do with the hub itself, but anyways, weird Germans, eh?

So Iīd like to buy a new rear hub. Chris King, no thanks, donīt really wanna spend about 600 CAD (at least thatīs what they cost over here, consider Iīm back in Germany). Hadley would be sweet but also very expensive and since they donīt have a German distributor... my friend just damaged a Hadley 150*12 rear hub and thereīs no place here whoīs willing to service a Hadley hub. So no thanks. Well, so I was just checking some prices the other day and I actually was quite surprised that the DT Swiss hubs are rather affordable over here. The 135 * 10 mm rear hub goes for about 250 CAD, which is not too bad for such a high quality rear hub. What do you think of the 440 FR? Any opinions or experiences? How well are they made? And most importantly... do they sound cool?

Cheers,
Moritz

Haha, John Henrys' just quoted me $380 on that hub. Too funny.

I say go with a Hope. You can find the Bulbs on sale now that they have the new Pro2 model out. I'd go with a Bulb over the Pro2 even if they weren't cheaper, as they have more engagement points.
Hopes are stupid easy to maintain, you don't need to worry about having a shop do it for you.

Hope or Hadley. (I'd go Hadley.) The DT Swiss can be good. I have not spent any time on them, but a friend has them and he has good things to say.

I'm a Chris King guy, but I really love the DT Swiss hubs. If you're in
Germany, I think that would be my first choice. They're very well
made, and easy to service. That'd be my first choice.

Just my $0.02,

I ride a DTSwiss FR440 rear hub. It has SUPER SOLID engagement and is extremely well made. I have not needed to service it but apparently the part available anywhere in the world and at a resonable cost.

They have a very solid clicking sound but not all that loud. Not as loud as Ringle, Hadley or King but louder than a Shimano.

If I needed a new hub, the FR440 would likely be my #1 choice, or maybe a King.
