My 66 is barely rubbing my down tube. Any ideas what to do? I am using a FSA DH Pig headset. Was wondering if i had a slightly larger headset if would create the sufficient clearance??

If you pick a headset with a taller bottom race, that should do the trick for a bit more clearance.

Just curious, what frame?

this may sound strage but couldnt you use a spacer normally used to raise stem height and put it right at the bottom of the steer tube to raise the frame up and stop it rubbing?

There are a few tricks...that is one of them (Cheryl@the cafe came up with that brilliant idea when I asked her about frame contact) and there is also a replacement aftermarket fork race that stands a few mm taller to help with this problem. I know the replacement works with canecreek headets as well as king, but beyond that, I don't know. If the fork is not clearing by more than a few mm, this wont help.

You'd probably be at risk of developing some weird play in the fork that you could never adjust out. The headset cup is pressed into the frame. The bearing sits in the cup. The bottom race, pushes against the bearing, providing a seal from the elements, and provide even tension to the bearing. So, probably not a good idea. Taller stack height for bottom cup, or the taller bottom fork race would be better ideas.

Imagine putting a spacer between the headtube and the bottom cup of the headset. Of course, this would be completely dependant on having long enough cups on your headset to allow for this since the spacers would drag the headset out of the bottom a bit.
This way, you still have the assembly in the right order for headset/race/fork, but you are given a bit more height to help clear the fork.

Maybe. The problem is the ID of those spacers is usually about 29mm while the OD of the steerer tube, and the ID of the crown race, are about 30.0mm. So the first problem is the spacer would not slide all the way to the bottom of the steerer. If someone was to file the inside of a spacer to increase the OD you may be able to get it on the fork, but then you would run into a second problem. The steerer only maintains the 30.0mm OD for about 5mm before it tapers down to about 28.6mm. So, if there is a headset spacer on the bottom of the steerer, the crown race likely wouldn't seat correctly on the 30.0 portion of the fork. It may engage slightly, but likely not entirely, providing a less than ideal situation. So... It may work with a spacer of 1 or 2mm, but probaly not too much more than that.
Perhaps an easier way is to use a bottom bracket spacer (or freewheel/ cassette spacer) between the bottom headset cup and the frame. As seand mentions, one would just have to ensure there is still adequate insertion of the headset cup into the head tube.

cane creek +5 headset is the only way...same thing on small nomads and single crown forks.
Ventana bikes now makes a crown race for CK headsets that addresses this specific issue.
The Ventana made crown race is available in two sizes +4mm and +7mm.
Had I known earlier that Ventana made these, I would have kept my Pike SL.

i've used the bb spacer on the GF's xs chapparal
now she has a nixon platium 05 with IT switch. the travel adjust cable rig and brass knob on the left leg hit the down tube (crossed up on a crash and ripped the cable clean off!!) so Karl at Freedom fixed it up perfect. He rotated and filed down the knob and used a starnut/steertube cable routing for the IT switch. Works awesome and looks super core!!

If you are like me, and have a 1.5 headtube, then canecreek double xc is one of your only options. The headset isn't tall enough to fix this problem.
The ventana race also doesn't fix the problem - atleast with an intense 6.6 and marz 66; there is still contact.
I am hoping this week the magical gnomes at the bicycle cafe can work up something to help with the downtube contact...of course, I can always just put some bumpers on my frame - dakine spikey stomp pad comes to mind - and call it done :)
My manitou flick did the same thing on my .243, I just filed down some of the top cap and it worked perfect. Im sure there is a little metal to spare on there :D
