I have Mavic EX721's (formerly known as D521's), which are pretty strong, but I keep bending and putting flat spots in them. Any suggestions on a stronger rim that's still relatively narrow?

Thanks,

Daniel.

what`s narrow?

Arrow make in my oppinion the strongest wheels on the market and i believe come in 28 and 30 mm widths. They are relatively heavy though....price ya pay i geuss.

what do you do to bend it?

Just to clarify; when I say "bend" I don't mean "put out of true (that never happens on these rims)"; I actually mean BEND the sidewalls - either in or out. This is usually caused by a combination of running my pressure too low and landing something hard - at least with my rear wheel; I ride a hardtail. But I recently put a very large flat spot/bent rim in my front wheel, and I have no idea how I pulled that off.

EX721's have a width of 28mm. Those Arrow rims sound interesting. I'll definitely check them out.

Unfortunately, light rims usually dont last on a freeride hardtail, especially not when it is being abused on rough terrain. Run a heavier, maybe a bit wider rear rim, although on the front I would like to say the 721 is fine, but it sounds like it isn't for you.

Ditto on that!

When I got into FR from being a roadie, I thought my XC rig with some bigger tires, a new fork, and some risers would be OK. My first huck off a drop on Seymour, and the wheel folded. Mavic 321 disc though, but you get the idea.

Light and FR don't mix.

ARROW RIM DHX 26" 36H BLK

.....this is the cheapest i`ve seen these wheels.....40 bucks less than i payed anyways  . I was more than a little off on the width, sorry- brain fart i geuss. If you`re running a hard tail then i`d think you`d want a wider wheel, but to each his own.

Remember, that`s a link to bikeroom.....they have a less than stellar rep around here!

doubletracks or Mag 30's are pretty bombproof. If they're too heavy, Sun MTX's are solid. The alloy that mavic uses is a bit on the soft side so they are a bit more prone to flat spots.

you could just put more air in your rear tire so it doesn't bottom out. You'll get fewer pinch flats too

Mavic's alloy is actually harder Bryce. Sun overcomes it by using more material = heavier.

so is it the shape of the MTX's that resist flat-spotting? Cuz they're lighter than 729's

Mag 30's are okay but are considerable wider (36mm??) than the 721's. The weight difference is not terrific.

If you go to 36mm, get WTB Laserdisc FR, they are likely the lightest of the 36mm. rims. They have crossbracing between the sidewalls to help reduce that "infolding" effect.

I have run these rims on my 'free' for 2 years. Tons of case action onto woodwork finally did flatspot the rims in several places but they did hold up well without the weight penalty of the DH rim.

upon closer inspection (ie in the truing stand), I discovered that I've actually CRACKED the rim at one of the spoke holes. While lacing over a rim from one of my spare wheels (another D521) I discovered the same crack, only one hole over!

Arrow DHX's = 820 grams each = quite a lot more than it's contender (in my mind), the ex729, at 675 grams each.

D521 are known to crack at the spoke hole with high spoke tension. I'm currently using one with a small crack.

Fuck yea. Im running the FRX on my DJ'er, and its holding up amazingly well. Its the very first wheel ive ever put together myself, and i did such a shitty job of tensioning the spokes. But the rim is holding up like no other. Im simply amazed it hasnt come out of true yet or gotten any flat spots considering the shitty build it has.

HIGHLY recomend it.

EDIT: and it has a pretty narrow profile like you want. GET IT

Check out the WTB Laser Disc DH (36mm wide/645gr), or the WTB Speed Disc Trail (27mm wider/500gr). For 07 WTB are coming out with a Laser Disc Freeride (width?? in between the other 2/around 600gr).

All of these models have the exclusive WTB I-Beam to make the rim torsionally more rigid and prevent flat spotting.
