I am looking to ride challenging (more than Pirate/Devil's Club and such) technical trails with some ladders/logs/skinnies/rock faces on them, without high drops. Never ridden these two trails - would they fit the bill? Or are there many high drops on them? How'bout Crack Addict - is it technical enough? Any other trails down low? No Joke was great, but Garbo's closed right now...any other purely technical singletracks (with drops of less than 5 ft) up there? Thx.

They're both pretty mellow... you can roll everything on Joyride and Schleyer has a minor 3-4 foot drop.

schleyer to clown shoes is one of my fave runs right now.

Actually if you are talking about the drop on Schleyer right before the rock face / right hand turn, that is rollable too. Just take the right side line.

Schleyer / Joyride / Upper Whistler DH are a good next step if you've mastered Angry Pirate.

Crack addict is okay. The skinnies get slippery and takes a while to dry out.

Hope that helps!

Try the UPPER portions of Schleyer and Joyride first. There is a huge difference between upper and lower Joyride. Also, Whistler DH is a good run. The most techinical are lower Joyride, Clownshoes, and Detroit Rock City.

Are you talking about the drop by the lift - the ladder to a ladder tranny? What is Upper Whis DH like?

Thanks for all the info, guys - one more question for the reference - how do those trails compare to Ned's or CBC? More or less challenging?
............never mind - saw the video, nice stuff, but does not look too bad. I think CBC is way harder.

lower joyride is tight, steep, and rooty.....probably my favourite natural trail on the mountain....no real drops, just tech!

ya I'd say lower joyride and clownshoes are the two most difficult trails on the lower mountain for me personally...upper joyride is much easier and SUPER fun though! lower is super tech and sketch, and has a log ride that I nearly broke my arm riding :(

clown shoes is much more tech, i find, than schleyer, which is good because you can "warm up" your tech skills on schleyer, then go to cl.

Its pretty easy UNTIL you come along a rock with a wooden ladder built to climb up it .... THEN hold on for the tech section after. What makes it difficult is that the trail is pretty standard and then all of a sudden you come across this rock .... entering blindly (because you can't see past it) into it without knowing whats on the other side is kind of scary. Although now you know, so when you see it coming, get ready for whats after the rock. You have about 0.5 seconds to pick a line and thats it. Good times though.

There are not many big drops on the mountain. I think the biggest one is probably at the end of Clownshoes. Don't forget that you can always try the trails for yourself and if there is anything you cannot do, you can always walk around:P.

if you are interested in going up on garbanzo when it opens no joke and freight train are pretty techhy but nothing big. original sin-goats gully has lots on steep technical roack faces and sections so once youve mastered no joke you should be able to ride original sin-goats gully

I've ridden No joke several times, wasn't extremely challenging, loved the length of it. Didn't do anything else on Garbanzo, or any of the double diamonds down low - singles were fine. I just don't want to do any big drops over 4-5', old body does take it very kindly anymore, plus I find the technical/balance stuff much more fun - i.e. CBC. WPB is nice, but if you don't know the trails, you may end up running into something too big unexpectedly and that what I'm trying to avoid. I am too comfy on the single diamonds, looking to progress this year and still be able to go to work on Monday if you catch my drift...JR and Schleyer are definitely on my list next Friday when I go up.

i would like to build one new really more technical trail on the park... the only section who's always making me think about it is that non official path on the right edge on lower original sin just beside the tree fort, it's always the same feeling on that one, am i gonna make it in one piece or not lol...

Shleyer is a great trail for small drops (3-4 ft), rock faces, and technical.

Mzx,

The only way to know is to try. Give Schleyer or Upper Joyride/WC/Detroit Rock City/Lower Clown Shoes a go. Get good there, then move on to Upper WC/Lower Joyride or Schleyer/All of Clown Shoes.

Sounds like you're up for them, ready to progress. Nice thing about those runs is that they are not overly busy. Try and follow a vet down, too. See the line, be the line. ;)

Thanks everyone for your input - I needed it because I prefer not to go in "blind" - now I know what to sorta expect. Next Friday is the day. Where is Detroit Rock city?

The only advice I can give you that hasn't been posted yet.

On clownshoes, there is a steep-ish/tight section towards the top...there is a concrete slab that forms a berm (of sorts). The work around is to drop into whis dh and back into cshoes...the section isnt nearly as bad as it looks, but man does it look bad when you first approach it. Also on cshoes, the last drop looks HUGE when you roll up to it. It isn't terrible, but it is a commitment.

Upper Joyride:
When you are under the gondie, you will come to a rock section...stay to the middle or center/right if you want to line-up for the long face...the face seems vertical when looking down it, but it really is smooth. The run-out has a bit of a bottom-out, but nothing suspension can't handle. The work around is super fun too though...nice and loose. Also, when you are about to punch out to where you can cross over to schleyer, you have a face to roll down. The further left you stay the smoother it is.

Uhmmm...from there, you have a choice of either rolling a log into a face, or going right and you will find a wood berm to a wicked huge dirt berm that turns down into a fast hill...I prefer the berm section as it is faster, but the face has its grin moments too :) you will be at the joyride skills park where you can either go to lower whis dh, rock city, or lower joyride. I would suggest whis dh to get a feel for faster rockfaces, joyride for tigh tech, or rock city for the "oh shit" factor.

If you have issues with joyride, you should stay away from rock city and shoes as they may sour your pallett.

Give upper whis dh a go at some point. Definitely not a heavily used trail by any means and I find it to be a great trail to do quick laps on when the mountain is busy...

Lower whis dh is awesome. If you haul ass into the trail, you can air out the fall-away after the first right hand turn. you can basically reach the bottom in the air, and then gap the next rock section. super fun.

Couldn't agree more... going to miss this when I am in Ontario!

Floating the fall away is fun for sure. Is gapping the rock after hard? I have never actually seen it done.

if you can air the fall-away, you can gap the rock no problem. only issue is the landing zone. if you land too far, you can land on a really terrible sharp rock. I saw some guys racing down there once and they gapped the rocks at mach1, so I tried it and ate it hard once, and cleaned it afterwards.

it works pretty nice if you kinda suck up the first rock and then use the next lip as the take off to gap over the third part.....mmmmm, love that high speed section from the road down through the rock slabs!

I just tried rock city for the first time. holy sh*t.

My 04' stinky with triple drop off's didn't do the job. Replacing them as I am writing this.

My vice was that I went with someone with same beginnner/interm skills as I have and just went down with the map as a guide.

Ended up on lower clown shoes and said 'holy sh*t' at least a dozen times.

I love it !
