Anybody know an ETA on when Crank it Up is supposed to be finished?? Its a great start to a trail, but I hate ending up on Fantastic (probably the lamest trail on the mountain). According to the maps, its supposed to go all the way to the Joyride jump park, and avoid having to ride Fantastic.

Hopefully early this year???

PS I am not dissing the trail crew at all .... you guys are the best and deserve the highest praise from all those who ride!

Fantastic is one of the more ironic trail names on the mountain...

it's just because it's the name of the ski run where trail is running on... and CIU is supposed to be done for july if my memory of the little piece of paper i could read last time is good...

Fantastic isn't the lamest trail on the mountain.

Boy thats a mature response...the trail is easy to go fast on...doesn't mean it does suck. :) I actually love the top part...the bottom part is amongst the most beat up trail of any trail on the mountain.

I agree with you ... the bottom is beat up and that is where Crank it Up shoots you out, its always channelled from water, hence why I call it the "worst" trail ...... in terms of riding conditions. That just my opinion on the worst trail on the lower mountain ...... not everybody has to agree. Maybe I should have said the "worst condition" trail. Is there a trail on the lower mountain that is in worst shape on more occassions than Fantastic ?????? I rarely ever ride it .... why would you with Schleyer and Upper Joyride right beside it??

I agree! Its the worst trail on the mountain. Could be better with some berms on the corners, some grooming, and some drainage, tho. Even with that, its just a switchback trail down a wide open swath.

There needs to be something on it to make it more interesting. Maybe some super-tight switchbacks with berms like on Lower Crippler opening up to wider spaced turns, then closing up again.

It just seems to be a waste to have a singletrack cutting back and forth across a ski trail.

What about take fantastic, smooth it out, berm the corners and make it a dual slalom course. That would be a sick connector and people of different abilities could ride it. They could only double berm the corners (is there a tech term for that?), keep the straighaways double track.

Heck I would be more than willing to take my shovel and help with the work... I have a nine to fiver... but would be willing to do it on weekends.

WorD!

Fantastic could use some drainage work, or better yet, just have some ladders/skinnies built above the flooded/muddy sections - good for riders/good for the trail and the environment.

I look forward to more of Crank It Up, but I also like fantastic. Sure it's rutted out and beat to crap but that makes it awesome. I love ripping through that section, really tests your suspension. Building a dual course there or somewhere else would be sweet too. I don't think ladders or skinnys would suit that section at all.

no more ladders or skinnys.... more airs and berms.

The problem with Fantastic is that there is nothing imaginative or creative about its design. It's the only trail (that I can think of) still remaining from the 90s that hasn't been updated to any extent. It is also the only bike trail that is entirely on a ski trail, limiting how much berm & wood work they can do with it.

If you rode Fantastic in 2000 and you rode it today, it is mostly the same. They took away a rock section after where the old Upper DH/Fantastic split was and added some erosion & mud in its place. It has a few moments of fun, but there is so much more potential for it.

Word is that trail may never see major work, they realised long time ago that trails on open runs are hard to maintain due to over exposure from the elements, even Crabapple hits and the green run beside it have nice rain ruts down the trail, just logistically is hard to keep them up in prime shape when the first good rain ruins your eight hour of toil, plus its one of the originals from the 90's, leave it a little old school.....

can't they divert the trail into the trees.... riders right ?

Crank It Up will head all through the trees and end at the Joyride Jump zone......

I thought you mentioned it wasn't going to get any real work done ?

The conversation had steered toward Fantastic if you were reading the thread, Fantastic probably won't see major improvements......

Not a huge Fantastic fan. However, I usually find myself riding it as a warm up. Or maybe just to get to CiU. I can't remember.

But it's always chundered!

i dont mind fantastic, first part if kinda fun. my warmup run is always fantastic - jump zone - lower whistler dh - connector to the ladder practice area - crack addict or b line

I love the idea of putting a dual salom run on the hill, but i think it would be killer if they did it on crab apple......first extend crab apple all the way up and then proced to build the fastest, biggest air dual course ever seen.

I know it will never happen, but i can dream can`t I?

that'd be about the last thing id ever do. whister pays people to do trail work and then reaps huge profits from people riding the trails. last thing id ever do is volunteer there.

Taylor, we pay people to work in the Bike Park cause you could never run an operation like this on voly labor and we provide good employment for quite a few people. The trail crew is very proud of the job that they do and all of them ride. As for reaping huge profits, you are mistaken there. You have no idea how much it costs to build new trails, maintain old ones and generaly operate the Bike Park. It is not cheap and there is not that much left at the end of the year.

update:

We have started doing the clearing for the next section of Krank It Up and the machines should be in there in about a week. We will keep you posted on the progress.
