the other day we were sitting at the parking lot at woodlot, waiting for our ride to show up, and we atarted thinking, how much is all the gear, bikes, armor, helmats, hydration packs etc, that we had sitting there worth. It ended up being over $15,000 for the 4 of us
damn thats alot of money for a few students
15K easily just by myself im sure if i added my receipts up..
course the trick is to NEVER add up what your hobby costs you...

7 to 9k
Havent spent the time to actualy work it out. Dont want to ;)
But then you factor the yearly spendings of just maintaining the bikes, and :damn:
EDIT: thats the stuff i own right now though. If you want to talk about the past 5 years or so, and you want to know how much money has left my wallet in that time? Its probably in the range of about 15K

I dont even want to know what I've personally spent on biking in my life, between mag's, parts, tools, maintanence, jerseys, gear, hell, I could have probably bought a small country

I'm kinda scared to add it all up if the truth be told.
Try doin' the math in the lineup at Whistler if you want to see scary numbers. We sat around one day and added up about a million bucks in riding gear in the lineup on a busy Crankworx day. Fringe sport my ass!

Ohh god, Never really thought of this..
I figured out that everything I have bought in total cost me around
$9000 so far in the past 3 years... including gear, Thats not including any repairs or the small things that add up like chains, grips though.
What everything is worth new is also a different story..
Hey, atleast im not spending 3k a year on smokes.

why feel guilty, its a great sport and keeps us all in good shape..
In todays age when most kids hobby is a video game its nice to see that not everyone
will be a fat ass.
even spending as much as we do it is still less than the person who spends a lifetime smoking.

A couple of years ago when NSMB had just started I kept alot of the test bikes in addition to my own personal bikes. For some reason that I can't remember I also had a bunch of Wade's and couple other pro's bikes. I calculated close to $60,000 worth. In addition to that I had all the videos (100s of DVDs and VHS) and all the clothing we shipped for the NSMB store. Someone would have had a field day if they had broken in.

compared to what I used to spend on Auto Racing and all the travel and stupidity that went with it, I'm still coming out ahead, or maybe less further behind.

Haha, yeah, that's what I always say too... except it's a little harder to argue that it keeps us in great shape when we're laying on the couch for 2 weeks (or longer) with a bad ankle (or worse)! No doubt, I agree with you though.

people that break chairs when they sit down should watch who they call a "fat ass". :P
biking is one of the cheapest sports around. you can get whatever you really need for a few thousand and then it's basically free. even when i had 5 bikes which were good for absolutely anything i could ever want i only spent around $6000.
one of the most fun too... lucky bastards all of us. :)

golfing
skydiving
flying
skiing/boarding
4x4'ing
car racing
HORSES!
biking is cheap.
As long as your not a gear whore its a pretty cheap sport. A decent 4K bike should last you 3 or 4 years.
Fact is the sport has gotten way cheaper in the last 4 years. Bikes are roughly half the price what they used to be. Not to mention if you run quality parts they tend to last unlike a few years ago.

Another scary calculation is to save all your bike receipts for one year and then compare that total with your total income figure when you do your taxes and figure out the percentage.
I did that once with snowboarding years ago before I was into biking. Similiar to what someone else said earlier, once you know you don't want to keep finding out on a yearly basis. As if that calculation wasn't scarry enough at the time, now that I'm into the two sports I'm sure the % is even worse.
That 'Whistler Line Up' game can be fun to play though. I've played it before as well. It can be a big $ dollar value even on quiet days.

i guess £1k when you factor everything in (and this is me just starting to get serious) gonna spend £200 pounds on thu tho, my bank balance wont like me for that. And want to get a fork after the summer. I cry myself to sleep as a student but then i smile for days after a good ride
